The book points out what has gone wrong with physics since Einstein's formulation of this theory of general relativity a century ago. It points out inconsistencies and fallacies in the standard model of the big bang and the inflationary scenario which was supposed to have overcome those shortcomings, the evolution of string theory from a theory of the strong interaction to a theory of gravitation and quantum mechanics which has not produced a single verifiable prediction, and what it has accomplished is reaffirming wrong results like the entropy of a black hole, which is not an entropy at all. There have even been attempts to demote gravity to an emergent phenomenon with catastrophic effects. We know exactly what happened at 1034 seconds after the big bang, but do not know how fast gravity propagates, whether gravitational waves exist, and what are the limits of Newton's law. Attempts to rectify this are the prediction of dark energy/matter, which has never been observed nor ever will, and Mond. The latter is really not a modification of Newtonian mechanics, but a transformation of a dynamical law into a statistical one.

Review
Lavenda examines current mysteries in physics and leverages such uncertainties to question some currently widely accepted theories.... he focuses on the difficulty scientists have faced so far in reconciling gravitational phenomena with the other fundamental forces, specifically asking whether the universe is hydrodynamic, whether general relativity is viable, and whether gravity can be considered an emergent phenomenon. The Hawking unification of general relativity, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics is dissected, along with Higgs boson and the meaning of fields in a vacuum...---ProtoView

Important, interesting and courageous
By Arieh Ben Naim
I read this book with great interest. There are a few parts discussing recent ideas about string theories which I am not familiar with. However, as far as those parts that I understood are concerned, I believe that this book is important and I wholeheartedly recommend it to students, as well as researchers in physics.
Reading through the book I felt a sense of admiration for the courage of the author in criticizing well-accepted theories, as well as well-recognized authorities.
Regarding Robin’s “review,” it should be said that criticizing authorities is not the same as “ranting,” and one cannot criticize a book for not offering “alternative explanations or paths of enquiry.” The book is not meant to offer any explanation or paths of inquiry.
Personally, I do not like popular science books which pose fancy questions such as “where did we come from?” or “where are we going?” and then suggesting that a “unified theory of nature” or “theory of everything” can offer answers to these questions.
Thus, Lavenda’s book is valuable even if it does not offer any alternative answers or explanations. It is doubtful that answers to some of these fancy questions will ever be provided. Books like this one are welcomed additions to the literature if for no other reason than to counterbalance the gung-ho approach of popular science books which attempt to enshrine fatally flawed theories.

Hard but very worthwhile
By Jhon
This book is a refreshing change from the scientific fiction that is being pawned off for hard facts in cosmology. Even with the set-backs that inflation has recently received, there does not appear to be a let-up in the books that consider it as scientific fact. This book challenges that and a lot of other conventional wisdom out there in the pseudo-scientific literature. In order to get a balanced perspective, it is a must read if for nothing else as an antidote.
