Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context, by Carol Vernallis

Music videos have ranged from simple tableaux of a band playing its instruments to multimillion dollar, high-concept extravaganzas. Born of a sudden expansion in new broadcast channels, music videos continue to exert an enormous influence on popular music. They help to create an artist's identity, to affect a song's mood, to determine chart success: the music video has changed our idea of the popular song.

Here at last is a study that treats music video as a distinct multimedia artistic genre, different from film, television, and indeed from the songs they illuminate―and sell. Carol Vernallis describes how verbal, musical, and visual codes combine in music video to create defining representations of race, class, gender, sexuality, and performance. The book explores the complex interactions of narrative, settings, props, costumes, lyrics, and much more. Three chapters contain close analyses of important videos: Madonna's "Cherish," Prince's "Gett Off," and Peter Gabriel's "Mercy St."

Review
Vernallis has done what no one else has to date . . . she has seen beyond the surface of the music video and has found the true and unique language of the art form.

"This book is the first to take music video seriously as a multimedia genre in its own right. Carol Vernallis not only has an intimate knowledge of the repertory, but also brings together perspectives that have in the past been pursued in isolation: the musical and the cinematic, the technical and the cultural. With its combination of theoretical topics and case studies, this book is the definitive one-stop solution for anybody who wants not just to experience, but to really understand, music videos." -- Nicholas Cook, Professor of Music, Royal Holloway, University of London, "Editor, Journal of the Royal Musical Association"

Review

Experiencing Music Video is the first book I'd ever read that really does take music video seriously. Carol Vernallis is an obsessive, passionate and continuously surprising video viewer, and succeeds in creating a quite new analytic field.

(Simon Frith, University of Stirling)

A thorough, stimulating account of the art of music video. Vernallis provides imaginative analyses that are sensitive to the expressive dimension of image/ sound combinations. She shows how the power of music videos depends largely on the elusive associations conjured up by fleeting images and swift turns of sound.

(David Bordwell, Department of Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin - Madison)

Vernallis has done what no one else has to date... she has seen beyond the surface of the music video and has found the true and unique language of the art form.

(Francis Lawrence, film/music video director)

Thinking in Systems: A Primer, by Donella H. Meadows

In the years following her role as the lead author of the international bestseller, Limits to Growth―the first book to show the consequences of unchecked growth on a finite planet― Donella Meadows remained a pioneer of environmental and social analysis until her untimely death in 2001.

Thinking in Systems, is a concise and crucial book offering insight for problem solving on scales ranging from the personal to the global. Edited by the Sustainability Institute’s Diana Wright, this essential primer brings systems thinking out of the realm of computers and equations and into the tangible world, showing readers how to develop the systems-thinking skills that thought leaders across the globe consider critical for 21st-century life.

Some of the biggest problems facing the world―war, hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation―are essentially system failures. They cannot be solved by fixing one piece in isolation from the others, because even seemingly minor details have enormous power to undermine the best efforts of too-narrow thinking.

While readers will learn the conceptual tools and methods of systems thinking, the heart of the book is grander than methodology. Donella Meadows was known as much for nurturing positive outcomes as she was for delving into the science behind global dilemmas. She reminds readers to pay attention to what is important, not just what is quantifiable, to stay humble, and to stay a learner.

In a world growing ever more complicated, crowded, and interdependent, Thinking in Systems helps readers avoid confusion and helplessness, the first step toward finding proactive and effective solutions.

Starred Review. Just before her death, scientist, farmer and leading environmentalist Meadows (1941-2001) completed an updated, 30th anniversary edition of her influential 1972 environmental call to action, Limits to Growth, as well as a draft of this book, in which she explains the methodology-systems analysis-she used in her ground-breaking work, and how it can be implemented for large-scale and individual problem solving. With humorous and commonplace examples for difficult concepts such as a "reinforcing feedback loop," (the more one brother pushes, the more the other brother pushes back), negative feedback (as in thermostats), accounting for delayed response (like in maintaining store inventory), Meadows leads readers through the increasingly complex ways that feedback loops operate to create self-organizing systems, in nature ("from viruses to redwood trees") and human endeavor. Further, Meadows explicates methods for fixing systems that have gone haywire ("The world's leaders are correctly fixated on economic growth ...but they're pushing with all their might in the wrong direction"). An invaluable companion piece to Limits to Growth, this is also a useful standalone overview of systems-based problem solving, "a simple book about a complex world" graced by the wisdom of a profound thinker committed to "shaping a better future."

Publishers Weekly, Starred Review-

An invaluable companion piece to Limits to Growth, this is also a useful standalone overview of systems-based problem solving, "a simple book about a complex world" graced by the wisdom of a profound thinker committed to "shaping a better future.

"When I read Thinking in Systems I am reminded of the enormity of the gap between systemic thinkers and policy makers. If this book helps narrow the gap, it will be Dana's greatest contribution."--Lester Brown, founder and President, Earth Policy Institute

"Dana Meadows' exposition in this book exhibits a degree of clarity and simplicity that can only be attained by one who profoundly and honestly understands the subject at hand--in this case systems modeling. Many thanks to Diana Wright for bringing this extra legacy from Dana to us."--Herman Daly, Professor, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland at College Park

"Reading Thinking in Systems evokes the wisdom and even the voice of Dana Meadows. We are reminded of how she was not only one of the great systems thinkers, but also one of our greatest teachers. This is modestly called a primer, and indeed it is, but unlike most books with that title, this one quickly takes one from the elementary into deep systems thinking about issues as critical today as they were when Dana wrote these words. The discussion of oil use and the interaction of its extraction pattern with economic decision making should be required reading for all energy policy makers and energy company executives (as well as all informed citizens in a democracy). The fisheries case reminds us of how little any government or private actor has done to grasp the importance of takeout flows in determining stocks when the input flows are not within our control. The commentary on economics and, yes the need to consider limits, is a clear systems statement that clarifies a great deal of discussion that goes back to The Limits to Growth.

It is remarkable that Dana is able to explain with such clarity such systems concepts of stocks, flows, feedback, time delays, resilience, bounded rationality, and system boundaries and to illustrate each one with multiple informative examples. Her statement that goals that optimize subsystems will sub optimize the functioning of the total system, is truly profound. As the book moves from the 'mechanics' of systems dynamics to Dana's more philosophical perspective, we are treated to her inherent belief in human values that consider the good of all, and how much more effective considering the needs of others is likely to be in solving larger, complex problems. The universe and our society may be very complex and operate in counterintuitive, non-liner fashion, but following the insights of this book and applying them will provide for far more effective solutions to the challenges of a 7 billion person planet than current incremental, linear responses by governments, corporations and individuals."--Bill Moomaw, Professor of International Environmental Policy at the Fletcher School, Tufts University

"In Dana Meadows's brilliantly integrative worldview, everything causes everything else; cause and effect loop back on themselves. She was the clearest thinker and writer co-creating the art and science of systems dynamics, and Thinking in Systems distills her lifetime of wisdom. This clear, fun-to-read synthesis will help diverse readers everywhere to grasp and harness how our complex world really works."--Amory B. Lovins, Chairman and Chief Scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute

"Dana Meadows taught a generation of students, friends, and colleagues the art and science of thinking beyond conventional boundaries. For her systems thinking included the expected things like recognizing patterns, connections, leverage points, feedback loops and also the human qualities of judgment, foresight, and kindness. She was a teacher with insight and heart. This long anticipated book, the distillation of her life's work, is a gem."--David Orr, Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics, Oberlin College

"The publication of Thinking in Systems is a landmark. To live sustainably on our planet, we must learn to understand human-environment interactions as complex systems marked by the impact of human actions, the prominence of nonlinear change, the importance of initial conditions, and the significance of emergent properties. Dana Meadows' final contribution is the best and most accessible introduction to this way of thinking we have. This book is destined to shape our understanding of socio-ecological systems in the years to come in much the same way that Silent Spring taught us to understand the nature of ecosystems in the 1960s and 1970s."--Oran R. Young, Professor, Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at University of California, Santa Barbara

"Thinking in Systems is required reading for anyone hoping to run a successful company, community, or country. Learning how to think in systems is now part of change-agent literacy. And this is the best book of its kind."--Hunter Lovins, founder and President of Natural Capital Solutions and coauthor of Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution

"Dana Meadows was one of the smartest people I ever knew, able to figure out the sensible answer to almost any problem. This book explains how she thought, and hence is of immense value to those of us who often wonder what she'd make of some new problem. A classic."--Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy

"An inspiring sequel to Dana Meadows' lifetime of seminal contributions to systems thinking, this highly accessible book should be read by everyone concerned with the world's future and how we can make it as good as it possibly can be."--Peter H. Raven, President, Missouri Botanical Garden

"Few matched Dana Meadows remarkable blend of eloquence and clarity in making systems thinking understandable. When Dana began her career, the field was esoteric and academic. Today it is the sine quo non for intelligent action in business and society. The publication of Meadows' previously unfinished manuscript is a gift for leaders of all sorts and at all levels."--Peter M. Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline and The Necessary Revolution

About the Author
A woman whose pioneering work in the 1970s still makes front-page news, Donella Meadows was a scientist, author, teacher, and farmer widely considered ahead of her time. She was one of the world's foremost systems analysts and lead author of the influential Limits to Growth--the 1972 book on global trends in population, economics, and the environment that was translated into 28 languages and became an international bestseller. That book launched a worldwide debate on the earth's capacity to withstand constant human development and expansion. Twenty years later, she and co-authors Dennis Meadows and Jorgen Randers reported on their follow-up study in Beyond the Limits and a final revision of their research, Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update, was published in 2004.

Differential equations in layman terms
By Magre
This book tries to touch on a topic which has been vastly researched for about 300 years already. People always wanted to model how things are interconnected and how changes in one thing affect another and how they evolve over time. A huge mathematics apparatus was developed to better describe all the intricacies of how systems work. And there is a whole area of mathematics which deals with systems and is called: The theory of differential equations.

This book is an introduction in the way of differential equations thinking. But it is hard to grasp the field beyond the very simplest examples without employing the mathematics apparatus. Just in case someone read this book and got intrigued and wants to learn more I suggest they got their hands on a graduate book on differential equations.

Required reading for humanity
By Marco
A beautiful and brilliant work that gifts us with a world view to aspire to. If I was king, this would be required being for all humanity. As Bill McKibben says, a classic. The first part of the book is the systems primer, and can be a bit of a slog for those unused to this discipline; the rest of the book is about how to apply systems thinking to a remarkably broad range of problems and issues. This book is as much a work of spirit as it is of science, and I keep it on the shelf between the Zen teachings and ecology texts. Get it; read it...more than once.

The past has come back to haunt P.I. Jack Carpenter, former head of the Broward County Missing Persons Unit. As a young cop he failed to stop the kidnapping of a college coed by a shockingly large assailant—and neither victim nor attacker was ever seen again. But eighteen years later, when his daughter, Jessie, asks him to bird-dog a creep who’s been shadowing her college basketball team, Carpenter’s pursuit of the voyeur leads him smack into another run-in with his old nemesis, who abducts one of Jessie’s teammates. With the assistance of the kidnap victim’s tycoon father and precious little time before the trail goes cold, Jack and his dog, Buster, hit the ground running—following a twisted trail from the ruins of a shuttered mental asylum with an infamous past to the streets of a sinister small town with a ghastly secret.

From Publishers Weekly
Spock-like logic and a bullet-train–paced plot drive Swain's third thriller to feature Florida PI Jack Carpenter (after Midnight Rambler and Night Stalker). When Carpenter fails to stop the brutal abduction of his daughter's college basketball teammate, he's painfully reminded of a serial abduction case he bungled 18 years before. Unearned guilt makes this latest case personal. Half-wit giant Lonnie and fellow inmate/mentor Mouse escape from an asylum for the criminally insane, and start seizing student nurses. Lonnie twice nearly kills Carpenter, once by tossing a 400-pound Coke machine at him. Carpenter's (and pooch Buster's) dogged search takes them to a small, eerie Florida townwhere the victims have been imprisoned. Bullets predictably fly when Carpenter's FBI friend, Ken Linderman, whose daughter has been abducted, pitches in to help. This installment grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until the last page. (Sept.)

THIS is a GREAT read, an awesome page turner
By CRP Ag
I LOVE this book. I have read several books through the Amazon Vine program, and I always try to pick authors I am not familiar with. Some have been good, some not so much, THIS is a great suspense novel.

I am not one who believes that the opening line of a story is critical, that said, this one is pretty darn good. Title, The Night Monster, opening line, "Cops weren't supposed to get frightened." How great is that, it just conjures up a picture of a police officer encountering something in the line of duty so beyond his comprehension and experience, he is afraid, or as the case develops, terrified by a life altering event.

As a brief summary, the story is presented in the first person by Jack Carpenter, a former detective. Jack works on finding missing people. To characterize Jack as tenacious is really selling him short. He is willing to do anyting to find and save a missing person. The zeal lead to his early departure from the police force.

Jack's story shows us the bare emotional journey that a parent seaching for a missing child can go through. We can feel the pain and anguish. Jack is not a superhuman, he is not robocop, just a driven guy who wants to make a difference.

This is a super page turner, you will not be able to put it down. I recommend this without hesitation or reservation.

Simply Superb - A Definite Page-Burner
By J. Avellanet
Yes, you will be up all night finishing this book if you plan on starting it any time after 8pm. So be forewarned.

From the opening chapter, with the search for a missing elementary school child, the story burns from one moment to the next. Admittedly, the main character's set up is a cliche - the ex-cop turned private eye with a laser-focus on his expertise (in this case, finding missing kids). But as John Gardner once wrote, All American fiction boils down to one of two plot lines - man rides into town or man rides out of town - it's what the author does with that story that counts. And boy does James Swain deliver.

Once you read that first bit of chapter 3 as the main character, Jack Carpenter, is searching for a missing boy, you know this is not your typical hard-boiled ex-cop story: "Water has a magical effect on autistic children. It calls to them like a siren's song. I found this out...."

This is not your standard cliched ex-cop whose life is on a downward slope; he's got good parts of his life (his relationship with his daughter) and some not so good (his relationship with his estranged wife). Throughout the story, Jack tries to reclaim his life. Sometimes it works and sometimes, well the typical "Hollywood story-telling" does not appear, making his frustrations and experiences much more real (like when Jack tries to buy his old house).

The story is fantastically paced, the writing is well done, and the unique twists will definitely catch you a bit off guard. Just an excellent, suspenseful mystery, and extremely well worth your time.

I'd not read any of James Swain's books before this; now I'll be reading them all.

Great resource for car enthusiasts!
By Camber
Being both an engineer and a car enthusiast, this book is right up my alley. I approached it with much anticipation, and at the end I wasn't disappointed. Though a few points could have been explained better and benefitted from more graphics, overall the book is plenty clear, covers a lot of material, and includes enough derivations of equations to satisfy people with a good physics background. I highly recommend this book to every car enthusiast, since it can greatly deepen your understanding of how cars should be designed and driven, and the challenges involved in both.

The following are my notes on the points from the book I personally found most worth remembering:

(1) Acceleration equals TG/mR, where T is engine torque (minus drivetrain losses of about 15% to 25%), G is overall gear ratio, m is car mass, and R is wheel radius. This equation shows that acceleration is primarily related to torque rather than horsepower, but acceleration must drop with higher speed as G increases.

(2) Since P = Fv and F = ma, a = P/vm, so horsepower is also important, since it can be viewed as the ability to generate acceleration at a given speed, but maximum acceleration is still inversely related to speed, as noted above. This is why cars have higher accelerations (and can spin their wheels) at lower speeds as compared to higher speeds.

(3) The maximum grip of street tires is about 1.1 g, so for powerful cars, tire grip, rather than torque or horsepower, is the limiting factor in acceleration at lower speeds. Specialized tires for drag racing can generate a grip of more than 4 g under ideal conditions. And because of the grip limit, AWD cars can achieve up to about 25% better acceleration than 2WD cars. Considering all of this, the best 0-60 time attainable is about 2.5 s (1.1 g acceleration the whole time). Race cars improve traction and stability by using wings and ground effects to produce substantial down force.

(4) Large-displacement naturally-aspirated engines typically have more low-rpm torque and higher overall acceleration. By contrast, forced induction (turbocharged or supercharged) engines compress the air entering the cylinders and have a more peaked torque curve.

(5) Top speed is the point where acceleration drops to zero, and thus the force generated by the engine equals aerodynamic drag (roughly proportional to speed squared) and rolling resistance. Because of the effect of gearing ratio, this force (and thus top speed) is not always achieved in top gear, but rather in the next lower gear.

(6) Maximum overall acceleration is typically achieved by upshifting at redline, or a little below redline.

(7) Acceleration can generally be increased by increasing gear ratio, but this is at the expense of lower top speed and lower fuel economy.

(8) Power is defined as torque x rpm (analogous to Fv), so the horsepower curve is implicit in the torque curve, the two curves always intersect at 5252 rpm (assuming units of horsepower and lb-ft), and the shape of the horsepower curve can readily be inferred from the shape of the torque curve. Also, peak horsepower will typically occur at higher rpm than peak torque.

(9) On the track, the fastest possible lap time is achieved by finding the optimal racing line and keeping the car at its limit along this racing line. The racing line varies somewhat between cars. Because of the banked track, Indy cars lap at an average of 225 mph.

(10) The friction circle shows the limits of a car's grip in the longitudinal and lateral directions. For the best lap time, a car should be kept close to this circle as much as possible (though staying strictly on the circle is physically impossible, due to the need to switch from acceleration to braking, and switching direction of turning). For cars which generate significant aerodynamic downforce, the friction circle will vary with speed. Also, tire temperature affects grip, and thus the diameter of the friction circle.

(11) Speed achievable through a turn is proportional to the square root of radius (and tire friction), so the radius should generally be maximized. However, when sequential turns are involved, a line must be chosen which is optimal for the group of turns.

(12) An implication of the friction circle is that there must be an inverse relationship between braking/acceleration force and turning force. This means trailing off the brakes while turning into a corner, and gradually adding throttle while unwinding the steering while on exiting a corner (after the apex). Exit speed from turns is especially important, especially if followed by long straights, and higher exit speed is achieved by later apexing (slow in, fast out). Later apexing is also generally safer.

(13) A non-flat track changes the optimal racing line and acceleration/brake points, since crests decrease grip and sags increase grip ("compression").

(14) The CG is one of a car's most important performance parameters, the CG height perhaps being most important, since this directly affects load transfer, and low CG is also needed to ensure slipping before rolling (most passenger cars need 1.3 to 1.5 g of lateral force to roll over, so slipping occurs first if tire grip is less than 1.1 g). A 50/50 weight distribution from front to rear is also desirable.

(15) Tires are among the most important and complex factors affecting a car's performance. Tires must be properly inflated to prevent uneven wear, and tire pressure increases as tires become warmer.

(16) Tire grip is due to both adhesion and mechanical grip. In wet conditions, adhesion is lost more than mechanical grip. Grip is generally optimal when tires are warm. Grip increases with vertical load up to a point, and then decreases with further vertical load.

(17) When turning, the angle of the tires generally doesn't match the direction of the car's movement, and the difference is the slip angle. Slip angle generates both lateral force and induced drag (which slows the car).

(18) A car with equal slip angles front and rear is neutral. Higher slip angle for the rear results in oversteer, whereas higher slip angle for the front results in understeer ("pushing"). At low speeds, slip angles are small enough to be neglected. At higher speeds, slip angles increase, and tendency to oversteer or understeer may depend on speed. Nearly all production cars are designed to understeer, since slowing down will tend to restore front grip and thus reduce understeer.

Excellent Tune Up
By John Fontanella
I read the book and went out and bought a race car. Of course, simplistic statements like that, though highly valued in the worlds of politics and news reporting, require explanation. For a little more than a year I had been thinking about doing some sort of racing. I did a couple of SCCA (Sports Car Club of America)-sponsored PDXs (performance driving experiences) at Summit Point Raceway and an autocross. Those were done in slightly modified "street" cars. (I try to only drive MGBs but sometimes it rains or they are on fire.) After the PDXs, that include classroom sessions in addition to driving, I was left with a large number of questions. Chuck Edmondson's book answered them all. I finally felt comfortable enough with the racing line, braking, accelerating and construction of a car (and tires) to make the investment.

The book does a wonderful job with both car fundamentals and physics. It's a rare book in that sense and is only possible because the author is an avid amateur racer and was trained in physics and has taught it for many years. I've already pointed out the usefulness of the car part (no pun intended) and I can't resist saying a few things about the physics (probably because I'm an ex-physics teacher). The book does the physics correctly and that, in itself, should make it worth reading. For example, someone finally has had the guts to point out that "weight transfer" should really be referred to as "load transfer." Weight can't be transferred. If weight could be transferred, it would make a lot of people on diets very happy. However, one doesn't have to know physics to read the book. It is not a novel, but anybody who wants to know about fast cars or racing should read it. There are equations in the book, a few of which I found to be mysterious (I gather that those are more familiar to engineers.). However, the purpose of each equation is clearly described in the book. In almost all cases understanding why the equation is there is sufficient for a useful reading of the book. In some cases, the detailed use of an equation is given in the book.

In summary, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants some new perspectives on fast cars, racing or physics.

Health Care Turning Point: Why Single Payer Won't Work (MIT Press), by Roger M. Battistella

In the battle over health care reform we can try to fashion new policies based on old ideas--or we can acknowledge today's demographic and economic realities. In Health Care Turning Point, health policy expert Roger Battistella argues that the conventional wisdom that dominates health policy debates is out of date. Battistella takes on popular misconceptions about the advantages of single-payer plans, the role of the market, and other health policy issues and outlines a pragmatic new approach. Few would disagree that the current system is broken. But, Battistella asserts provocatively, a government takeover of health insurance patterned after Medicare and Medicaid won't work either. Battistella argues that contrary to popular belief, single-payer coverage will not lower health spending but would encourage overconsumption and drive costs up. If consumers were responsible for buying their own health insurance (as they are for buying their own car and home insurance), he argues, they'd look for value and demand greater price and quality transparency from providers.

The economic shibboleth that the principles of market competition don't apply to health care is nonsense, Battistella says. We won't achieve real health care reform until policy makers adjust to this reality and adopt a more pragmatic view.

Quality Information
By Ira E. Stoll
Before moving ahead any further on a health care overhaul, the president and members of Congress should stop and read Roger Battistella's new book. It won't take long; the text of the book is a slim 134 pages. But those pages are packed with facts and analysis that have the potential to change the way readers think about health care. I learned a lot from it, and I thought I already knew a lot about health care.

I was left impressed that Mr. Obama's plan has managed to get as far along as it has, given the budget constraints. Mr. Battistella essentially makes the case that America can barely afford the existing entitlements, let alone set up new ones.

The existing federal health care programs have their problems. A Harvard professor, Malcolm Sparrow, estimates that as much as 20% to 30% of federal health spending is consumed by fraud, the book says.

More generous federal health benefits, Mr. Battistella suggests, would only invite more fraud. He offers the example of Sweden: "During recent World Cup soccer finals sick leave among Swedish men rose by 55 percent." In Italy, in 2005, state employees took an average of 18 days sick leave, while workers in America average five sick days a year. The definition of "sick," in other words, is readily expandable along with government benefits.

Not that the current American system is perfect, by any stretch. Our health care system can be downright dangerous; medical errors are either the third or the eighth leading cause of death in America, some of them related to problems as simple as the continued use of hard-to-read handwriting on prescriptions and medical orders. Even the low-range estimate of medical errors places them ahead of car accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS as a cause of death, the book says.

Think the banks are the biggest lobbyists in Washington? Nope. According to Mr. Battistella, since 2006 the health industry has spent more on lobbying than any other sector of the economy.

So how to improve upon this mess? Not with central planning or control, Mr. Battistella advises: "The sheer complexity of real world conditions surpasses the capacity of experts and their analytical models, no matter how brilliant or sophisticated they are."

When dealing with obstinate interest group opposition, "improvements occur faster and with less acrimony when left to market competition than if the same objectives are sought through legislative edict or planning regulations," he writes.

Among Mr. Battistella's predictions: "employers will seek to follow the precedent established with pension benefit programs and transform health care from a defined benefit to a defined contribution plan in which vouchers are an important component." The Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan already functions somewhat like a voucher; the author explains that, "when individuals select a plan with a premium less than the government's contribution, they keep the difference. Conversely, if they chose a more expensive plan, they pay the difference out of their own pocket."

Runaway health care spending will finally be curbed, he writes, only when consumers start being "intimately involved in paying for the cost of their care rather than relegating payment to a third party." Those consumers "need access to user-friendly reliable price and quality information on specific providers to enable knowledgeable comparisons."

In the area of quality information that will help enable knowledgeable comparisons, Mr. Battistella has, with this book, made a formidable contribution of his own.

Disclosure: My father had Professor Battistella as a teacher at Cornell and they have kept up over the years.

A final note: the prose in this book is accessible enough, but a reader can tell it's by a an academic rather than someone whose primary expertise is in writing for a wide, general audience. Don't be deterred; it's only 134 pages.

Health Care Turning Point: Why Single Payer Won't Work. Review by Ronald Miller–Three Stars
By Ronald J. Miller
I chose to rate this book as three stars for three reasons: First, the author is quite verbose with his wording and sentence structure. When I first begun to read it, I couldn't help but wonder as to whom he was writing. One has to read carefully.

Second, the author is very biased in favor of the Republican Party in his presentation. He definitely appears to be a full fledged member of the "power elite" in this country. If that term is foreign to you, please read Who Rules America? Power, Politics, and Social Change by G. William Domhoff. Trust me. It's a good read.

Thirdly, in my opinion, the authors' reasoning as to why a single payer health care system will not work is contradicted by his reasoning (very good and informative reasoning I might add) as to the many problems with today's healthcare. His real problem is that he has no feeling for the lower classes and doesn't want to pay the taxes necessary to implement a single payer system. Again, this is my personal opinion from reading his book and his bio.

I especially liked his book notes and bibliography which will help me in any future study I may wish to pursue. His discussion concerning the many problems involved in health care, I think, were very much to the point and informative. Our major difference, politically is that I don't believe in a two-tiered economic system, the haves and the have nots as portrayed in the movie "Elysium". God made this world for all of us–not just a relative handful.

I recommend this book for the careful reader.

And their latest creation is their most wicked weapon yet: The Ghost of Destruction! Humanoid in appearance, The Ghost looks like a pale boy... until he unleashes his deadly powers! A whirlwind of annihilation, The Ghost is capable of leveling entire planets! And one by one, planets are crumbling under the Warmongers' steely boots... From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—If Snow is any indication of the direction Tokyopop is moving toward in the manga genre, then readers can rejoice. A straightforward superhero tale told in manga style, yet more of a combination of the two, it is a great read. Two enormous robots travel through interplanetary space, wiping out all leftover mortals. Their drone, The Ghost, destroys planets at their command. But on The Hub, a drifter called Snow arrives and joins the band of resistance fighters. Although it's easy to tell where the story is going, the originality of the city setting-Snow works as a fry cook among the local working class, touchingly rendered here-and the hybrid manga/comic artwork are spellbinding. Each character blends elements of the gigantic eyes of anime and the chiseled musculature of comics, making for a fantastic visual, and the robots are drawn in truly awesome dimensions. A really terrific story.—John Leighton, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Not bad for a graphic novel
By movie view
The story involves a man named snow who wanders a snow filled planet, while befriending a local gang trying to save the city from another gang of space pirates. Little does he know that he himself is a weapon capable of destroying entire planets. The story was really good and the images where great, yet the author only made one book in the series. Don't get to attached to the story, since depressingly it doesn't last to long.

Wide Open, by Larry Bjornson

Based on actual events, this is the epic story of Abilene, Kansas, at a time when the cowboy was king, might made right, and the future seemed as unsettled as the endless prairie.

Abilene, 1871. Will Merritt is fiercely protective of the cattle trade that made his father’s fortune. Idolizing the cowboys who flood the streets each summer, Will and his friends are drawn to Abilene’s exotic Texastown district—a powderkeg of saloons and brothels so notorious that the mayor has hired the West’s most famous gunman, Wild Bill Hickok, to police its streets. Yet even with Hickok as marshal, Abilene boils with deep divisions.
The townsfolk resent the migrant settlers whose new farms are slicing up the rangeland. And no one is more intolerant than Will’s best friend, Jasper, who delights in tormenting any farmer he encounters. But Will finds himself torn when he meets the beautiful and beguiling Anna, whose dignity and determination test his deepest beliefs.

Then Will’s father reveals a stunning secret that challenges Abilene’s future, one that makes the Merritts outcasts. And when Wild Bill’s tenure as marshal comes to a violent head, Will realizes that everything—his family, his friends, and the only home he’s ever known—could be gone in an instant, leaving only an empty wilderness once again.

Review
"Countless novels have been written about Wild Bill Hickok and the rough cattle town of Abilene, Kansas, of the 1870s. Larry Bjornson, however, makes the story fresh, unique, and moving."--Johnny D. Boggs, Spur Award-winning author of East of the Border and Northfield

"From the raucous saloons kept in check by Marshal Wild Bill Hickok, to the farmers living in sod houses as they struggle to scrape by, Larry Bjornson brings the wild west alive with such detail and clarity, if I didn't know better, I would think he lived through it." --Louis Sachar, author of Newbery Medal winner Holes

A Fantastic Read
By Natalie
"Wide Open" delivers every element I want in a book: good writing, realistic characters, and a great story. And as a bonus, the book also supplies a good dose of page-turning suspense, historical information about a pivotal time in the settlement of the American West, and most importantly, it left me feeling richer as a person, richer to have known Will Merritt, his family, and all the other folks who live on the pages of Bjornson's novel. "Wide Open" takes an honored place in my bookshelf as one of those treasures I will return to over and over, for the sheer pleasure of experiencing that richness again.

Author Larry Bjornson draws the reader in right away, with wonderful, well-crafted prose, and keeps us riveted until the last page, painting one cinematic scene after another, in luscious detail, transporting us to the time and place of the American frontier just after the Civil War, during one summer which historically couldn't possibly pack more punch, action-wise: this was the summer feared gunman Wild Bill Hickok was called into Abilene, Kansas to keep order, just as the interests and tempers of two clashing populations - the carousing, cattle-driving cowboys and the dirt-poor, hard-working settlers - were flaring into an unstoppable showdown.

Bjornson puts the reader right in the middle of the action with an extremely likeable fifteen-year-old narrator named Will Merritt, whose father becomes the agent of the turmoil that erupts in Abilene that summer. Will's life is turned upside-down as he finds himself torn between loyalties, facing not only danger and loss but also his own conscience.

Will gives us a wide-eyed, youthful window on all the action, and there is more action packed into this 380-page novel than I would have believed possible. There are cattle drives, barroom brawls, accidents, emergencies, stunts, and adventures, too many to count. Each one is drawn in sprawling cinematic detail, full of sights and sounds and smells of Old West life that put the reader right in the middle of things. There's the time the longhorn steer falls through the....well, I don't want to give anything away, let's just say there is one surprise after another, all woven into a meaningful whole by the thoughtful narration of young Will.

Possibly the most compelling reason for me to recommend the book is the quality of Bjornson's writing. His prose is so well-crafted that it bears reading slowly, so that one can savor the language. Bjornson's ability to evoke the sensory experience of being present at a scene is remarkable. His ability to make the reader feel like his characters are absolutely real people, through wonderfully observant external and internal dialogue, brings not only a caring for these characters, but also a recognition of the ways we share the same foibles, and we feel what they feel. The poignancy of situations encountered by Will are handled with such sensitivity by Bjornson that I was moved to tears many times.

Bjornson treats us to unexpected little moments of self-honesty and insight from his narrator that are rare in a novel. Will screws up sometimes, and he knows it, but we are happy to forgive him, because his humanity always shines through. Will's initial attraction to his first love, Anna, is fraught with conflicting emotions that Bjornson delights in sharing with us, and not without a considerable amount of humor. All the characters in "Wide Open" - whether cowboy, settler, or townie, whether young'n or adult - are complex and deeply human. Bjornson says in an interview, "Everyone in the book, even the best of them, at some point behaves badly. And even the worst are capable of honorable actions."

"Wide Open" is traditional in style - unapologetically old-fashioned, and I want to call it "reader-friendly." There is no graphic violence, no cynicism, and not even any bad language that I can recall. In summary, it's a very satisfying read - wonderfully written, fun, emotionally satisfying, with sympathetic characters, a palpable sense of time and place, and cinematic action and lots of it. I can't wait for Bjornson's next offering.

Engrossing historical fiction for readers of all ages.
By Rontonio
I like to be entertained, and this book delivered. It's the story of a boy growing up on the outskirts of one of the most raucous towns in the old west, Ablilene, Kansas in 1871. It's part mystery, authentic western action, a love story, and real history from a time long ago - You'll be floored by the twist half way through when you read what Will's father had been planning.

Danger was all around. Emotions were peaked. The streets of Texastown, rampaging cattle, and Wild Bill Hickok had the ability to change lives in an instant, and they did. Tenderness and the meaning of real friendship are here, too. You will remember what it was like for kids during the long days of summers past, before they were hijacked by baseball and soccer practice. There were so many ways to get into trouble.

Will Merritt, then about 15 years old, narrates in a way that you will forever remember. You may have read some good books, but not one by an author that really knows how to write and so deftly turn a phrase. When I compare notes with fellow readers I can barely hold back when describing the vivid scenes and downright enjoyment and surprise I had when I "lived" in the Wide Open world just outside Abilene.

In my mind's eye the characters were alive, and I eavesdropped on their conversations. This book was a visual experience similar to watching a fascinating subtitled movie, and days later forgotten I had read what the characters where saying. The scenes in town were filled with gunshots, the din of cowboys raising hell and the smell of whiskey and horses. I was parched by the hot prairie winds. I was there.

The well-tuned dialog is up there with my favorite authors, but this is a warning. Wide Open will spoil you. The book you read after this one, regardless of who wrote it, will seem like it was penned by a high school student. This is literary historical fiction at its finest. It's one of the best, most engrossing books I've ever experienced. I didn't want it to end.

Remarkable writing; deeply moving story
By Disorderly Words
In 1871, Abilene, Kansas, is a raucous cow town on the cusp of a historic shift that will define the future of an entire region. Residents are well aware that without the massive cattle drives from Texas, Abilene wouldn't exist, yet they grow increasingly alarmed by the violence and sin thousands of wild Texas cowboys bring with them. Some Abilene citizens are convinced the farmers flooding in to homestead free federal land represent the town's salvation, if the dirt-poor sodbusters can overcome Kansas' relentless summer heat and drought.

Young Will Merritt firmly supports the pro-cowboy faction, publicly shaming the stubble-jumpers at every opportunity. Abilene is the first real home fifteen-year-old Will and his family have known after following his vagabond father's reckless dreams. Gregarious J.T. Merritt finally has found success as a land speculator. He's an important man in town ... until he gambles on a solution that will save the farmers and point Abilene in a new, more respectable, direction. Overnight, Will's life -- and his perspective -- undergo a monumental change. Growing up can be bittersweet.

Winner of multiple awards, Larry Bjornson's WIDE OPEN engrosses from the very first page. The nearly flawless writing is breathtaking, presenting cinematic panoramas, riveting action, and heartfelt emotion without ever compromising the first-person point of view, slowing the pace, or dipping into maudlin.

Bjornson's voice is fresh and evocative; his effortless prose breathes astounding beauty, chuckle-worthy cleverness, and heart-rending pathos in equal measure. This is literature in the Steinbeck tradition.

Although "wild and woolly" certainly describes Bjornson's Abilene and the surrounding Kansas prairie, WIDE OPEN runs far deeper than a young man's adventure. Will's journey is universal and profoundly moving. Regardless readers' personal histories, they'll recognize themselves in Will.

I cannot recommend WIDE OPEN highly enough, as both an excellent story for readers of all ages and an education in elevating fiction, regardless of genre, to art.

Surprisingly readable
By Kevin B. Cohen
A surprisingly readable treatment of natural language processing in the Lisp programming language. Note that it is *not* an introduction to Lisp.
The table of contents:
(1) Introduction
(2) Finite-state techniques
(3) Recursive and augmented transition networks
(4) Grammars
(5) Parsing, search and ambiguity
(6) Well-formed substring tables and charts
(7) Features and the lexicon
(8) Semantics
(9) Question answering and inference
(10) Pragmatics
In addition, the book contains code listings, solutions to selected exercises, and good end-of-chapter suggestions for further reading.

It is nice to see some Lisp code related with NLP
By Alexandre Rademaker
It is nice to see some Lisp code related with NLP. Although we have more modern books about this subject nowadays, the ideas presented in the Book are still very valid and help us to have some historical background about NLP. The Lisp code is clear and pleasure to read.
