Like ancient Rome, America is saddled with an empire that is fatally undermining its republican government, argues Johnson (The Sorrows of Empire), in this bleak jeremiad. He surveys the trappings of empire: the brutal war of choice in Iraq and other foreign interventions going back decades; the militarization of space; the hundreds of overseas U.S. military bases full of "swaggering soldiers who brawl and sometimes rape." At home, the growth of an "imperial presidency," with the CIA as its "private army," has culminated in the Bush administration's resort to warrantless wiretaps, torture, a "gulag" of secret CIA prisons and an unconstitutional arrogation of "dictatorial" powers, while a corrupt Congress bows like the Roman Senate to Caesar. Retribution looms, the author warns, as the American economy, dependent on a bloated military-industrial complex and foreign borrowing, staggers toward bankruptcy, maybe a military coup. The third book in a series begun with Blowback (2000), which predicted harsh comeuppance for the post-cold war American "global empire," and The Sorrows of Empire (2004), which continued Johnson's thesis with a lambasting of American militarism pre- and post-September 11, this book continues the author's broad condemnation of American foreign policy by warning of imminent constitutional and economic collapse. In a chapter analyzing "comparative imperial pathologies," Johnson reminds readers of Hannah Arendt's point that successful imperialism requires that democratic systems give way to tyranny and asserts that the U.S. must choose between giving up its empire of military bases (as did Britain after World War II) or retaining the bases at the expense of its democracy (as did Rome). Johnson also predicts dire consequences should the U.S. continue to militarize low Earth orbits in pursuit of security. American Military arrogance equates with the Roman empire.

This author, Chalmers Johnson, has a long history of being right about how US foreign policies have been badly flawed for decades. He broght up to date the term Blowback which was first mentioned in a CIA report in 1953, but most certainly was symbolized by 911. This book recaps the record and suggests it is vital that we review the history of flawed outcomes from our imperial war-making and our world wide web of military bases that constitute an empire. Ever since the American Presidency became truly imperial under LBJ, we have been treated to an endless parade of majestic media images--meetings, speeches and other events which likely would have made Mark Twain cringe. We increasingly kowtow to the office as if its occupant were somehow operating under the Divine Right of Kings. But how have our Imperial Presidents performed on national security? Truly badly. Pushed by the fear of not appearing strong on national defense, one by one they felt into the arms of the arms manufacturers who were the darlings of our military. A number of other writers have eloquently echoed Johnson's perspicacious prognostications about building our empire. For example, Andrew Bacevich in his book, Washington Rules: America's Path To Permanent War, describes the role of two key architects of that empire: Allen Dulles, who planned the Bay of Pigs disaster (which cost him his job), and General Curtis LeMay who drove the Strategic Air Command to obtain nuclear weapons could have blown the planet to smithereens many times over. Bacevich's book by a 20-year military officer, now a professor at Boston University, ranges over the decades since WWII to describe the process whereby America became an Empire, developing what Bacevich calls the "sacred trinity"--global military presence, global power projection and global intervention as exemplified by Korea, Vietnam and finally the Bush-contrived "preventive war" in Iraq. Another author who dedicates the book to Johnson, The American Way of War: How Bush's Wars Became Obama's, by Tom Engelhardt, offers a little-heralded paperback masterpiece of only 216 pages which should enlighten anyone who has not already come to the sad conclusion that the US has turned into a dangerous empire. From its first line, author Engelhardt sets the tragic scene: ''War is Peace' was one of the memorable slogans on the facade of the Ministry of Truth or Minitrue in 'Newspeak' the language invented by George Orwell in 1948 for his dystopian novel, 1984". [America's Tragic Descent into Empire, July 9, 2010] From there Engelhardt's readers are tutored in how our fear of attack was obsessively co-opted by our government and its willing military suppliers. All these authors plausibly describe the spread, like an octopus. of America's presence around the world, in the form of over 700 military bases--most in places where our security clearly wasn't then and/or is not now at stake. In retrospect our forays into Korea, Vietnam and now in the Middle East, proved that war was not the answer. The cost in human lives and treasure and the escalating threat of terrorism cry out for a new evaluation of our present imperial policies, But they have been embraced by all Presidents since WWII--including Obama, who has now bought into Bush's ultimate folly, continuing that "preventive war" in Iraq with no real end to our occupancy there and around the world in sight. For example, we have built our largest overseas embassy in Bagdad and have other large permanent military facilities in Iraq. As in Vietnam, these authors predict the US will eventually come to the point of withdrawal, after the loss of hundreds of lost lives on both sides later and trillions in wasted money. Johnson predicts bankruptcy if we do not. In fairness, all Obama's predecessors since WWII have folded to the wishes of the powerful military-industrial complex, about which President Eisenhower warned us in 1961. Of these three, it is my view that Chalmers Johnson's Dismantling The Empire: America's Last Best Hope represents the best overview of how we got where we are. His most dramatic recommendation--do away with the CIA--may never get traction, but his section on "The Legacy of the OSS" (the OSS was shut down in September 1945 and the Central Intelligence Agency started in 1947) should be enough to persuade most readers that our government should hasten to shut down this incompetent agency, which has been allowed total secrecy on how it has wasted our tax dollars (between $44 and $48 billion a year) and covered up dangerous and outrageous initiatives after they have failed. (Johnson's analysis of "Charley Wilson's War" should be mandatory reading for all Americans.) Yes, we lost 3000 lives on 9/11, plus over 4,000 men and women in the current wars. But we killed three million in Vietnam, then hundreds of thousands in Cambodia and now hundreds of thousands in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, including many women and children. Our Cold War motivations may have had some validity at an earlier time. But the alleged threats that prompted our military escalations clearly need reassessment now. Looking back on the recent dreary ninth Anniversary of 9/11, and at the decades of bad policies which preceded that "blowback" (a term updated from a 1953 CIA report by Chalmers Johnson), we are reminded of what Pogo said long ago: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

The high moral cost of empire

After WW II the U.S. chose the path of empire. Empires extend and maintain their influence by building military bases all over the world in other countries. This is why the U.S. currently spends more on its military than all other countries combined. We can fund this massive project because the dollar is the world's reserve currency, meaning that, because global commodities such as oil and gold must be purchased with dollars, countries must maintain dollars on hand. This dramatically increases the supply of dollars in circulation, which in turn reduces the relative effects of our deficit spending on our military (i.e., those newly-minted dollars are a smaller percentage of the global money supply than they would be if others didn't stockpile the dollar, and therefore don't create as much inflation).

However, countries, particularly those in the Middle East, are growing frustrated with America's military presence and are lashing back at us with "terrorist" attacks. Others are threatening to move off the dollar as the reserve currency. Those threats to our empire require the U.S. to respond, and that response has lead to shameful human rights abuses that Johnson documents in great detail in this book, as well as frightening new military advances in space that may eventually enable the U.S. pull its military bases out of others' countries but still maintain its dominance. The U.S. also uses these "terrorist" threats to justify greater restrictions on liberty at home, so that, in Johnson's estimation, the U.S. has ceased being a republic, as did Rome.

Finally, Johnson shows that our growing national debt makes our military dominance unsustainable and that the U.S. is heading in one of two directions: a dictatorship that will keep its citizens under control as the empire reduces public services in order to maintain its military might. Or, a relinquishing of its empire and a return to democracy, as did Great Britain.

Military Keynesianism

"Nemesis" by Chalmers Johnson is one of several books written recently on the decline and fall of the American System. It is not quite so pessimistic as Morris Berman's "Why America Failed" or Chris Hedges "The Death of the Liberal Class" both of which predicted or implied that America would become a "Banana Republic" in the fairly near future - i.e. that "America will be composed of a large, dispossessed underclass and a tiny empowered oligarchy that will run a ruthless and brutal system of neo-feudalism from secure compounds." Johnson thinks it far more likly that the American system will succumb to political and economic bankruptcy brought on by "Military Keynesianism." This bankruptcy would not mean the literal end of the United States but it would certainly mean a catastrophic recession, the collapse of our stock market, the end of our standard of living, and a series of new attitudes that would be appropriate to a much poorer country.

"Keynesianism" is named for the great British economist John Maynard Keynes who wrote "The Economic Consequences of the Peace" (about the disastrous economic consequences of the Versaille Treaty - which would eventually lead to Hitler), "The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money" published in 1936 and other influential books. In his writings and public career he developed a scheme to save captitalist economies from cycles of boom and bust as well as the severe decline of consumer spending that occurs in periods of depression. To prevent the economy from contracting and the social unrest that might ensue, Keynes thought that the government should step in, and, through deficit spending, put people back to work. Conversely, during periods of prosperity, he thought government should cut spending and rebuild the treasury. He called his plan counter-cyclical "pump-priming."

During the New Deal in the 1930s the United States put Keynesianism into practice with great success but they also saw the rudimentary beginnings of a backlash. Conservative capitalists feared that too much government intervention would delegitimate and demystify capitalism as an economic system that works by allegedly "quasi-natural laws." They also feared that too much spending on social welfare might shift the balance of power in society from the capitalist class to the working class and its unions. At first they tried to hold back counter-cyclical spending but World War II intervened and unleashed a torrent of public funds for weapons.

The term "Military Keynesianism" was coined in 1943 by the Polish economist in exile Micha Kalecki to explain Nazi Germany's success in overcoming the Great Depression and achieving full employment. Before World War II Hitler was celebrated around for world for having achieved a "German economic miracle." However, this was accomplished by employing counter cyclical pump-priming for military purposes. The military thus becomes an employer of last resort, like the old Civilian Conservation Corps but on a much larger scale. The negative aspects of Military Keynesianism include its encouragement of militarism and the potential to encourage a military-industrial complex. Such a complex sooner or later short circuits Keynes insistence that government spending be cut back in times of nearly full employment - in other words it becomes a permanent institution whose "pump" must always be primed.

The two most prominent generals in our history have given us warnings of the dangers militarism in a democracy. George Washington, in his farewell address, warns about the threat of standing armies to liberty, and particularly republican liberty. And perhaps the more famous one, Dwight Eisenhower, also in in his farewell address, where he invented the phrase "military-industrial complex" - he wanted to say "military-industrial-congressional complex" but was advised not to go that far. Today, fifty years later, the "miitary-industrial-congressional complex" is a fact of life and has permeated into all but a handful of Congressional districts.

The Pentagon tries to conceal the real cost of the military in various ways. There are numerous military activities not carried on by the Dept. of Defense and are, therefore, not part of the Defense Budget. Adding the non-Defense Deptartment expenditures, the supplemental approriations for whatever wars are being fought at the time, and the military contruction budget to the Defense Appropriations Bill actuallly doubles what the government calls the annual defnse budget. It is an amount larger than all other defense budgets on earth. Still to be covered are interest payments for the cost of past wars going back to 1916!

The combination of huge standing armies, almost continuous wars, and ruinous military expenses have destroyed our republican structure in favor an imperial presidency. Once a nation is started down that path, the dynamics that apply to all empires come into play: isolation, overstretch, the uniting of forces opposed to imperialsim and bankruptcy. Our present policies appear to be unsustainable; we can't go on like this indefinitely. As Herbert Stein, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors during the Nixon Administration, once famously said: "Things that can't go on forever, don't."

Informative but Judgemental

While I found this text to be quiet informative I also found it to be rather judgmental and generalizing at times. For example, when talking about socially negated loss the author states "many single young women who get pregnant choose to terminate the pregnancy. One problem here is that the decision is often made in isolation-the man often is not told about the pregnancy..." Yet Worden does not cite the source of such generalized information. Additionally, Worden argues that that Admitting positive feelings [towards the deceased] is a necessary part of the process of achieving an adequate and healthy resolution to one's grief. I'm not sure I agree. I have worked with clients who's parents did nothing short of torture them in childhood and they did not have any positive feelings towards them. However they were able to successfully move and work through both their trauma and grief.

useful when leading grief workshops

Those with a solid background, experience and education in grief and bereavement support will appreciate Worden's ability to provide both the basics, useful when leading grief workshops, and the in-depth knowledge needed by those who seek or already have credentialing or licensing in theraputic counseling. We are a Hospice agency providing grief support and use it to ensure that all staff providing this service are following the same protocol. We supplement this with coursework managed by the Hospice Education Network.

excellent resource

If anyone needs a concise, go-to resource for ministering to others, especially those who are grieving, this is it. Worden is thorough without being pedantic. He sets forth his tasks of mourning, and mediators of grieving, which make so much more sense than the long-misused Kubler-Ross stages of grief. (No disrespect intended, her work was groundbreaking in caring for the dying). Great book.

Escape Velocity chapter one
The bustling crowd appeared to part before the couple as they strode purposefully along the riverbank. It was early morning in London and while the other pedestrians bumped and jostled each other, this man and woman seemed to emit an invisible aura that kept the crowds from getting too close.

The man was tall and distinguished, the graying hair at his temples the only real clue to his age. He wore an immaculately tailored black suit and long black overcoat, the bloodred cravat at his throat providing the only splash of color. The woman beside him looked younger, her short dark hair framing a pale but strikingly beautiful face. She also appeared less relaxed than her companion, her eyes scanning the crowd intently.

“I don’t like this, Max,” Raven said quietly.

“So you have said on at least seven previous occasions,” Dr. Nero replied calmly.

“It’s a trap,” Raven replied quickly, “and an obvious one at that.” She struggled to keep the frustration from her voice.

“That may be,” Nero said, the hint of a smile appearing at the corner of his mouth, “but Gregori is one of my oldest and most trusted allies. If he tells me that it is urgent that he meet with me, then I cannot afford to ignore his request.”

“But why here?” Raven asked quickly. “Out in the open, exposed like this?”

“Gregori will have his reasons,” Nero replied. “He is too old and wise to take such risks lightly.” Nero hoped that this display of confidence in his old friend would reassure Raven, but he too was secretly concerned that Gregori had felt it necessary to take such a risk. Gregori Leonov, like Nero, was one of the most senior members of the ruling council of G.L.O.V.E., the Global League of Villainous Enterprises, and attaining such a position was largely dependent on having extremely well-honed survival instincts. It was hard for Nero to imagine what might drive his old friend to meet in such a public location, but he knew it was not a request that he could choose to ignore.

“I hope that your trust in him is not misplaced,” Raven replied sharply, her anger betrayed by the slight strengthening of her usually subtle Russian accent, “because if this goes bad, it will go very, very bad very, very quickly.”

“Which is exactly why you’re here despite the fact that Gregori insisted I come alone,” Nero said, an edge of impatience in his own voice now.

“Sometimes you have too much faith in me, Max,” Raven replied unhappily. “We should leave now; this is unwise.”

“That is my decision to make, Raven, and mine alone.” Nero used her codename deliberately, a subtle but pointed reminder that while he valued her counsel, it did not give her the right to push him too far.

“Very well,” Raven replied, stopping and staring at him. “I shall make myself . . . unobtrusive.”

“See that you do,” Nero said, glancing at his watch; it was near the appointed time for their meeting.

“Signal me if you have the slightest reason to suspect anything.”

“Of course,” Nero said. “Let us hope that it’s not necessary.”

“Indeed,” Raven replied, her expression grim, and she turned and vanished into the crowd of passersby.

Nero turned and continued walking along the riverbank toward the spot where they had arranged to meet, in the shadow of the London Eye. The vast wheel loomed above Nero and he could not help but be impressed by its scale. He had seen some staggering feats of engineering and construction in his time, not least the construction of H.I.V.E., but this was still a striking monument.

“Hello, Max.”

Nero’s inspection of the giant wheel was cut short by the sound of his old friend’s voice, but when he turned to face him he was shocked by what he saw. Gregori Leonov had always been a bear of a man, famed for the spine-snapping embraces that were reserved for his closest friends. But that was not the same man who stood before Nero now. He was thinner and looked years older, his skin gray and his eyes darting about as if expecting a sudden attack. He made no move to embrace Nero; he did not even offer his hand, but instead just gave him a small, sad smile.

“Gregori,” Nero replied, knowing that he had not been able to keep the surprise from his face at seeing his fellow council member so reduced.

“It is good to see you, old friend,” Leonov said quietly. “I did not know who else I could turn to.”

“What’s wrong, Gregori?” Nero asked, genuinely concerned for his friend.

“You came alone?” he responded, staring at Nero.

“As alone as I ever am,” Nero said, suddenly not wanting to lie.

“Of course, I should not expect you to be without your guardian angel,” Gregori replied with a slight smile.

“Natalya is many things, Gregori, but she’s no angel.” Nero raised an eyebrow.

“No, I suppose she is not.” Gregori chuckled.

Nero was glad to hear his old friend laugh, and for the most fleeting moment Nero could see a hint of the man he used to know before the gray pall of unhappiness fell across his face again.

“Come, my friend,” Gregori said, taking Nero by the elbow, “I have arranged for us to have somewhere more private to talk.” He steered Nero toward the steps leading up to the boarding platform for the carriages that were slowly rotating around the enormous wheel. He ignored the line of tourists, simply nodding to one of the attendants, and stepped into a waiting capsule. Nero suspected that the attendant was significantly better off now than he had been when he had woken up that morning. The door slid shut behind them and they began their slow ascent over the cold gray waters of the Thames.

The glass-walled capsule was designed to hold two dozen people, but now, with just the two of them on board, it seemed to Nero to be the most private and yet strangely exposed place they could possibly meet. Gregori stood holding the rail, looking out over the water, seeming to take a moment to gather his strength before he turned to Nero and spoke.

“What do you know of the Renaissance Initiative?” he asked, looking straight at Nero, his eyes narrowing.

“Rumors on the wind, nothing substantive,” Nero replied evenly. It was a lie, of course; he had learned more than he truly cared to know of this secret project when he had questioned Cypher after his abortive attempt to take over H.I.V.E. the previous year. Cypher had been insane, there was little doubt of that, but Nero had no reason to disbelieve what the man had told him. Indeed, his own painstakingly discreet enquiries had only served to verify what he had fervently wished not to be true. Number One, the supreme leader of G.L.O.V.E., was secretly trying to rebuild the psychotic, impossibly dangerous, rogue artificial intelligence Overlord, his efforts concealed from the rest of the world’s villains by a shadowy organization known only as the Renaissance Initiative. Nero could not even begin to guess what Number One’s motives could possibly be. Nero’s own life-threatening ordeal at the hands of the nightmarish machine intelligence was enough to tell him that this plan was not just dangerous but demented. Nero could make no sense of it; Number One had been instrumental in destroying the rampant AI and yet now he seemed to be secretly attempting to bring it back to life.

“I suspect that you know rather more than that, old friend,” Gregori replied sadly, “and I also suspect that you know who is truly behind this madness. I have beaten you in too many games of cards not to know when you are bluffing.”

“Let us assume . . . hypothetically . . . that I do,” Nero replied carefully, rather annoyed that Gregori could read him so well, “but why are we here today?”

“Because you know as well as I do—no, better than I do—why Number One cannot be allowed to succeed in this.”

That was it; Gregori had said his name, Number One. That made this a conspiracy, even if at this moment it only included the two of them. More powerful men had lost their lives for far less. Nero knew he could still walk away, still pretend that he did not know what Gregori was suggesting, but to do so would let this insanity continue unchecked and would also almost certainly cost Leonov his life. It was a price that Nero was not prepared to pay.

“Max, it is worse than you know,” Gregori said, shaking his head. “Number One is not just trying to rebuild Overlord—I wish to God it were that simple.” Gregori rubbed his eyes, letting out a long sigh.

“What is it, Gregori?” Nero said, putting his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “What is he planning?”

“I discovered something, Max, something that I was never supposed to know. Number One found out and he sent the Reapers after me and my family.”

Nero’s eyes widened. Every member of G.L.O.V.E. knew of the Reapers. They were Number One’s personal executioners, an utterly ruthless death squad that left no one alive in its wake. They were the stuff of nightmares, and Number One had turned them loose on Gregori.

“My wife, my daughters, they’re gone, Max—executed by those butchers. It was a miracle I survived.”

Alarm bells rang suddenly in Nero’s head. The Reapers never left survivors, unless they wanted to. If they had tracked Gregori, followed him there . . .

“Why did he do this, Gregori? What did you find out?”

“We have to stop him, Max. He’s—”

The glass behind Gregori cracked like a spider’s web and his eyes went wide with shock. Nero tried to grab him, to support him, but Gregori crumpled to the floor, dead before he hit the ground. There had been no gunshot, no sound at all, but the sniper’s bullet had found its target with lethal accuracy. Nero suddenly felt horribly exposed, nearly a hundred yards above the ground in a glass bubble with no reason to assume that he would not be the next target. He pressed the button on the side of his watch; she may not be an angel, but he had to put his faith in Raven now.



Raven watched from nearby as Nero and Gregori boarded the capsule and it was slowly carried upward by the rotation of the enormous wheel. She was not happy. The two men were getting harder and harder to see as the capsule climbed higher and higher into the air, and Raven got up to move to a better vantage point. Suddenly she heard a noise that sent an electric jolt of adrenaline through her body. None of the surrounding pedestrians had heard it; it was, after all, no louder than a small polite cough. But to Raven it was the unmistakeable silenced report of a high-powered rifle. Her eyes shot upward and she saw the bullet hole in the toughened glass of the capsule that Nero had been standing in far overhead. Without hesitating, she shed her long black overcoat and exposed the black leather body armor and tactical harness that she had been wearing underneath. She broke into a run, heading straight for the Eye, the insistent bleep of Nero’s emergency signal sounding in her ear.



On a distant rooftop, an observer peered through powerful binoculars at the scene that was unfolding below. He was completely bald but for a neatly shaved band of white hair that ran above his ears and around the back of his head, giving him an almost monkish appearance. He wore a small radio headset, which crackled into life as he lowered the binoculars to reveal his cold gray eyes.

“Longshot One to control, secondary target is down, primary is in scope,” a voice reported in his ear.

“Hold fire, Longshot One,” the man instructed calmly, “but keep him targeted. He leaves here with us or he doesn’t leave at all, understood?”

“Roger that, holding on target,” the voice replied in his ear.

“Longshot Two to control”—another voice cut into the channel—“I have an unidentified tactically equipped female heading toward the target zone.”

The man raised the binoculars again, scanned the area at the base of the wheel, and instantly picked out a black-clad figure running at full tilt toward the structure.

“It would appear that we have flushed the wolf from the flock,” he said to himself with a thin smile. He raised the tiny microphone to his lips. “Control to all units, unidentified female is new primary target. Wait until she is clear of the crowd, then take her down.”

Several voices signaled their acknowledgment of the new order. The man pitched his binoculars upward, focusing on the single figure left standing in the capsule that was now nearing the apex of its climb.

“Control to all aerial units, you may begin your approach.”



Raven felt a cold chill as she ran across the square toward the wheel. There was no mistaking the distinctive pulsing thump of helicopters and they were getting closer all the time. And then something that sounded like an angry hornet buzzed past her ear and she knew that she was now the sniper’s target. She dived behind a nearby ticket booth and the glass above her shattered in an explosion of tiny fragments. People were suddenly screaming and starting to run as more shots ricocheted noisily off the metal walkway, inches from her. There was no chance of spotting her unseen assailants. To do that she would have to expose herself and, judging by the frequency of the shots, there was more than one shooter out there. The moment she stuck her head out to get a fix on their positions it would be taken off. She pulled a small gray cylinder from the webbing on her chest and struck it hard on the ground. The device ignited instantly, flooding the area with thick white smoke.



Trapped in the capsule, Nero felt a growing sense of helplessness. Raven had been right: it was madness to allow himself to fall into this trap, but he had not been thinking of the risk, only of the note of desperation in his friend’s voice, and now he was paying the price. In their world it was unusual to find someone that you could really trust, and those people became impossibly valuable. It was a weakness that whoever was responsible for this understood and was clearly prepared to exploit. He knew that they wanted to take him alive—if not he would already be dead—and that meant he had to try to escape: capture was not an option for Nero. He searched the capsule desperately for anything that might be of use, but found nothing. He could only wait and pray that Raven would be able to get to him.

From far below he could hear screams of panic. He rushed to the end of the capsule and peered down toward the base of the wheel just in time to see the whole area filled with thick, billowing white smoke. He felt suddenly calm. If anyone could get him out of this, she could. A hint of movement caught his eye and he turned to look up the river. Heading toward the wheel, in tight tactical formation just a couple of yards above the surface of the water, were four black helicopters, and hanging from their sides were the unmistakeable silhouettes of heavily armed soldiers.

“Whatever you’re going to do, Natalya,” Nero muttered to himself, “do it fast.”



The bald man continued to watch through his binoculars as the woman dived for cover at the base of the wheel, shots peppering the structure she was hiding behind.

“Watch your targets, Longshot units,” the man said calmly. “I would rather avoid civilian casualties if possible.”

Suddenly the woman’s position was engulfed in white smoke.

“All units go to thermal imaging,” the man instructed. “Wait for her to break cover, then take your shots.”

As he watched, a tiny projectile trailing a thin line shot out of the cloud and struck the central hub of the wheel, fifty yards above. Moments later the woman shot straight upward out of the smoke, rocketing along the line she had just fired.

“Longshot Three to control, she’s moving too fast. I’ve got no shot,” the man’s radio reported.

“Stay on her,” the man barked, a sudden edge of panic in his previously calm voice. “Aerial units, hit that capsule NOW!”



Raven hit the curved steel of the Eye’s hub at a run, her grappler line snapping back into its wrist-mounted housing. A shot ricocheted off the metal near her feet with a spark and she dived forward, rolling in the air so she landed on her back, sliding toward the spokes of the massive wheel. She fired the grappler again, the monofilament cable snaking up toward Nero’s glass cage. The unit on her wrist bleeped to confirm a solid hit and she pressed the controls to send herself rocketing skyward again. She slammed into the capsule hard, stretching desperately for the small metal rungs that ran up the side of it to the roof. She caught hold of one of the tiny handholds and swung free, more than a hundred yards above the cold gray waters of the Thames. Suddenly she felt a searing pain in her thigh as one of the snipers nearly found his mark, leaving a deep graze that began to bleed profusely. She hauled herself up, trying to ignore the pain in her leg. Nero stared at her from inside the capsule, a look of grave concern on his face. She reached the roof and tried to pull open the emergency access hatch, but it was firmly locked. She frantically searched the pouches on her harness for the gear that would let her blow the hatch, but she froze as an enormous shadow fell across her and a huge gust of wind threatened to pluck her off her perch. Helicopters surrounded the pod on all sides; each one was filled with special forces troops, the uniforms bearing the strange logo of an angel holding a sword, which she had never seen before. They all had their weapons trained on her. She looked down through the glass beneath her and saw Nero slowly shake his head.

“Go,” he said, though Raven only saw his lips move, and despite every instinct screaming at her to ignore him, she knew that he was right.

“Put your hands on your head and stay on your knees,” a voice commanded over a speaker mounted on the nearest helicopter, “or we will open fire.”

Raven turned slowly to face the helicopter and raised her hands, then in a lightning movement she tossed a smoke grenade she had palmed moments earlier into the helicopter. Smoke instantly filled the cabin and Raven sprinted the few feet toward the edge of the capsule roof and leaped. She just caught the landing skid of the helicopter as the blinded pilot sent it spiraling down toward the river. She started to haul herself up, knowing that if she could just get into the cabin, she might be able to fight her way to the controls. Suddenly, what felt like a giant fist punched her in the back and she lost her grip, falling like a rag doll toward the icy water below. There was a small splash as she hit the surface, and then nothing.



“Good shot, unit four,” the bald man said calmly as he watched the woman’s limp form hit the water. “Have the river dragged. I want to see the body.”

He allowed himself a small, crooked smile as the special forces team rappelled down lines from one of the helicopters onto the roof of the gondola. Their mission was accomplished. They had their prize.

I couldn't belive it

This book is fantastic!
I mean we've all seen good books but this one's just brilliant. I doubt anyone could surpass it if they tried.(J.K Rowling,I'm talking to you)Its fast-paced plot draws you in right up to the final page.This book could be given to anyone and if I could I'd give it 10 stars

You Will Never Like Another Book

After reading the first two books in this saga, I was impressed. Never before had I read a book this good by a debuting author, save Suzanne Collins. But I was willing to wait for the American release back in April. Then, last December I read the online preview, and immediately begged my father to have the book imported from Britain. It only arrived two weeks before the actual release date, but it was worth it.

The book itself ran a lot like the previous two. The beginning was quirky, the middle was a little slow, and the end was awesome.

But this one was a thousand times better.

This was what I wrote in my journal after reading it:

"A few weeks ago, I read Escape Velocity (book three in HIVE series) and it was extremely extremely extremely wonderful. It surpassed the previous two by light years, and also managed to blow Maximum Ride straight out of the water."

The beginning made me a bit tired, as it seemed as if no one could actually die and stay dead, but the ending was wonderful.

I finished it at 12:36 in the morning. I never actually fell asleep that night. I finally gave up after two hours of staring at the ceiling, once I'd counted to one thousand several times.

In short, if you're thinking you might not read it based on the previous two, I would recommend at least checking this one out from the library. It was one of the best YA books I've seen written in a long while.

This series keeps getting better!!!!!

(May contain spoilers.) In hive 3, Dr. Nero is captured by H.O.P.E. and Otto, Wing, Shelby, Raven and Laura have to rescue him. Helping rescue Nero, are Diabolus Darkroom and H.I.V.Emind. Before at they do that they have to get access to the deepcore to find where H.O.P.E's and Nero's location. While rescuing Nero, they get captured and Number One want to see Dr. Nero and Otto personally and they figure out that Number One is Overlord. Back at H.I.V.E, Number One has sent Contessa to be headmistress and everyone thinks "That's crazy!", as Contessa was a traitor the last book. Overall, this book was great. READ THIS BOOK AND THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A guidebook on eliminating waste within a value stream with a proven improvement methodology based teamwork

Healthcare is undergoing many changes these days which has long been overdue for those of us who have been patients. Lean thinking has been spreading globally for decades in product and service businesses. In the last few years this value stream improvement methodology has been gaining support in health care. Now there is a step by step guide for visualizing the patient experience and improving the flow of value with Perfecting Patient Journeys.

Published by the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) Perfecting Patient Journeys is a guide for leaders of healthcare organizations who want to implement lean thinking. Readers will learn how to identify and select a problem, define a project scope, and create a shared understanding of what's occurring in the value stream. Readers will also learn to develop a shared vision of an improved future, and how to work together to make that vision a reality.

The authors describe and advocate a value-stream approach to improvement bringing together both scientific and cultural components needed to transform Lean Healthcare.

The workbook comprises of 8 chapters which constitutes the steps of the improvement cycle:
Team-based problem solving and learning for continuous improvement
Scoping your improvement project
Value-stream mapping - current state
Future-state mapping
Measuring the future state and planning for change
Establishing project management
Keeping your improvement project on track
Moving forward- from projects and events to consistent practice

The basis of the workbook was a field guide developed for support of training during collaborative sessions in a project with MHA Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality. Throughout the book the authors, who worked on the project, utilize their case study of St. Luke's Hospital initiative to improve the performance of their emergency department as an example. They include details of improvement from St. Luke's that makes it easy to follow and implement this improvement approach.

While this workbook is intended for practitioners with direct interaction with patients it also helps senior leadership understand and support system level improvements. Written is a clear manner without excessive Lean jargon or terminology, this book presents the value-stream improvement approach, which simultaneously blends the ability to change structure and process while changing culture.

Perfecting Patient Journeys follows the style as other LEI workbooks but has a different look. This workbook doesn't have the typical spiral binding of the other workbooks as it a hard cover book. Likely this was done to better market the target audience of healthcare professionals. Personally I prefer the spiral bound style for its convenience in the gemba or at team meetings.

While the audience for this book is clearly healthcare workers it has easy application for any service process. This guide presents a method to sort through problems, establish priorities, and focus on solving the right problems with teamwork which is applicable in all processes. Lean practitioners and those alike interested in learning an improvement methodology based on eliminating waste within a value stream with teamwork will find this book a helpful reference guide.

A roadmap to successful outcomes

Perfecting Patient Journeys is a wonderful road-map to achieving successful outcomes in emergency departments as well as other departments in a hospital. I was aware of the success of the Lean approach at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester)emergency department. I was then fortunate enough to have one of the book's authors, Karl Ohaus, volunteer his time and fortune to assist my Bach Mai Hospital Project to successfully improve the operation of Bach Mai's emergency department - a very busy emergency department and teaching center, in the 2000 bed government hospital for the poor, in Hanoi, Vietnam. Karl's efforts, Lean's program and the book's stress on the beneficial effects of teamwork can really make a difference that can be a model for other areas of a hospital.
The authors are to be congratulated on a nice, easy to read, book that should prove valuable to several areas of our health care system.

I was disappointed

This book is egregiously overpriced, that's my main complaint. OK at $9.99 for a reader not well versed in Lean, but I feel ripped off at this price for a eBook. I read it on my iPad in one sitting during a flight from SFO to BOS, and didn't learn anything I didn't already know. The "fictitious hospital" was annoying. How about some real world examples? (as in the much better book "Healthcare Kaizen.") I bought this because it came from the ThedaCare Center. I have greatly enjoyed the works of Dr. Toussaint published there. I will look a bit more closely next time.

Not the original you remember

I was excited to read this book to my sons as I had great memories of my father reading it to me. I wasn't much farther into the book than a few paragraphs before I had a conversation with myself something along the lines of, "Man, you can't go home again. This book is sort of crap." We finished it. The kids liked the pictures but were generally unimpressed. I shelved it and was left a little mystified. Something just didn't really add up.

As I thought back to what I had loved about the book I began to realize that the book I had just read to my children was missing a number of key points I thought I had remembered. Weren't they loggers? Didn't he escape to Mt. Rainer? As an adult, wasn't I remembering a series of cautionary environmental messages wrapped up in a cute series of drawings and lovable characters? Damn, I wasn't making all this up. Was I?

So, though I didn't think I ever would, I cracked the book again, and there, sure enough: Revised 2002.

Revised? By who? Why? You can go dig all this up, if you want. I did, and won't bore you with it. It's pretty pathetic. Suffice to say, if you remember the book as a kid, and want to share it with your own, DO NOT BUY THIS COPY. It is a hacked up, sad, emaciated, Bergeronian, mass market, version that assumes you and your children are stupid. There's no depth here, no heart. Just cute pictures and embarrassing text.

Cosgrove got the rights back to his book, and either has by the time you read this, or soon will, reprint the original book. Either go find a copy before it was marginalized in 2002, or buy a new one from him.

Educational book your kids will want to read

Very informative book. I had always wondered where the light on top of the space needle came from. Unlike many building in other cities their is a perfectly naturally explanation of why it lights up so beautifully. I recommend for inclusion in the state of Kansas High School science colloquium to make sure all sides are taught without bias.

Great children's book!

This was my favorite book as a child so I had to buy one for a good friend of mine. I'm sure it'll be one of his favs as well.
