How the Other Half Banks: Exclusion, Exploitation, and the Threat to Democracy, by Mehrsa Baradaran

The United States has two separate banking systems today―one serving the well-to-do and another exploiting everyone else. How the Other Half Banks contributes to the growing conversation on American inequality by highlighting one of its prime causes: unequal credit. Mehrsa Baradaran examines how a significant portion of the population, deserted by banks, is forced to wander through a Wild West of payday lenders and check-cashing services to cover emergency expenses and pay for necessities―all thanks to deregulation that began in the 1970s and continues decades later.

In an age of corporate megabanks with trillions of dollars in assets, it is easy to forget that America’s banking system was originally created as a public service. Banks have always relied on credit from the federal government, provided on favorable terms so that they could issue low-interest loans. But as banks grew in size and political influence, they shed their social contract with the American people, demanding to be treated as a private industry free from any public-serving responsibility. They abandoned less profitable, low-income customers in favor of wealthier clients and high-yield investments. Fringe lenders stepped in to fill the void. This two-tier banking system has become even more unequal since the 2008 financial crisis.

Baradaran proposes a solution: reenlisting the U.S. Post Office in its historic function of providing bank services. The post office played an important but largely forgotten role in the creation of American democracy, and it could be deployed again to level the field of financial opportunity.

Review
An important voice…[Baradaran’s] excellent new book, How the Other Half Banks: Exclusion, Exploitation and the Threat to Democracy describes how, for decades, big banks have shed their social contract with the American public and transformed themselves into modern monstrosities which serve corporations and the wealthy and exploit or avoid the less affluent members of our society. Setting the stage with this historical context, Baradaran makes a compelling case for a postal banking system which would greatly benefit millions of struggling ‘unbanked’ Americans. (Ralph Nader Huffington Post 2015-11-13)

The title of [Baradaran’s] lean, angry book echoes the photojournalism of Jacob Riis, whose 1890 work on the slums of New York, How the Other Half Lives, spurred a housing reform movement… In a society built on credit as a means to wealth, low-income families deserve a much better deal, Baradaran argues. People do not opt for expensive products because they do not know any better, or are somehow reckless or irresponsible. They do so because they have no choice. And that is a national embarrassment. (Ben McLannahan Financial Times 2015-11-13)

Baradaran argues persuasively that the banking industry, fattened on public subsidies (including too-big-to-fail bailouts), owes low-income families a better deal… How the Other Half Banks is well researched and clearly written… The bankers who fully understand the system are heavily invested in it. Books like this are written for the rest of us. (Nancy Folbre New York Times Book Review 2015-10-06)

Mehrsa Baradaran’s terrific book, How the Other Half Banks, argues that we could and should ask banks to serve the poor and working class once again. In particular, post office banks (with storefronts and websites both) could provide those missing banking services: a place to park cash, earn interest and take out small amount loans… The idea is not hers originally, but she seizes and expands on the idea brilliantly and at great length. In particular, she advances the case for postal banking by reviewing the country’s earlier experience with postal banks, and by linking that experience to the modern problem of missing services for the poor and working class… One can appreciate why the policy world has come to Baradaran for her expertise, and this book will constitute a central contribution to the debate… I will recommend this book to all who are interested in structural racism… Baradaran demonstrates how the the post-deregulation restructuring of banking has disproportionately impacted communities of color, and how postal banking and other public options might bring them back into the fold once more. Baradaran’s revival of postal banking, and her description of the disappearance of services in the wake of deregulation, is fresh and engaging, and I highly recommend [the] book for all who are interested in the structure of inequality. (Daria Roithmayr JOTWELL 2015-10-02)

Steadily shedding low-profit clients, American banks flourished during three decades of deregulation, but, when the crunch came last decade, the U.S. government―spouting we-are-all-in-this-together rhetoric―rushed to their rescue. In good times, banks are free-market players. In bad times, they have all the comforts of state agents. The author’s emphasis is not on curtailing megabanks’ privileges―a reader could get the impression she thinks that case too obvious for lengthy exposition―but on providing secure, low-cost credit for those who need it most. Her back-to-the-future solution is postal banking. Although the idea sounds terribly old-fashioned―it hasn’t been seen in the U.S. since the 1960s―more than 50 nations, including Japan and Germany, maintain a vibrant postal-bank system, a pillar of their strong savings cultures. (Brian Bethune Maclean’s 2015-10-26)

Baradaran charges that nearly half of the American population has been deprived of access to financial services at a fair price thanks to financial deregulation…A comprehensive addition to the ongoing discussions of both inequality and the financial system. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-08-01)

A fascinating in-depth view of why and how so many Americans struggle to find affordable banking services. Modern finance provides great opportunity but also many risks, through hidden fees or even outright deception. The crisis of 2008 was not an aberration―and we have not fixed the deep-seated underlying problems. A must read for anyone who aspires to build financial security for themselves, for their family, and for the nation. (Simon Johnson, coauthor of White House Burning and 13 Bankers)

Do banks have a public responsibility to serve the poor? This captivating book argues that they do. A fresh and provocative perspective on the very old problem of the poor and debt. (Patricia A. McCoy, coauthor of The Subprime Virus)

Thoughtful and exhaustive. (Helaine Olen Democracy 2016-01-01)

Important and comprehensive…How the Other Half Banks is a fascinating read, and Baradaran has done a masterful job of turning what could be incredibly dry material into a well-paced, accessible chronicle of how the consumer financial services industry has changed since the beginning of the republic. She traces the history of the relationship between the banking industry and the nation, and shows how banks have gained more power, leaving the less well-off excluded and exploited…How the Other Half Banks tells an important story, one in which we have allowed the profit motives of banks to trump the public interest. Baradaran is right to take a pragmatic approach to these issues, as it seems unlikely that there is sufficient political will to renegotiate the social contract between banks and government so that it once again favors the public. An engaging, informative trip through the history and present of banking as it relates to the poor.
By Sam
You can’t get through Professor Baradaran’s book without becoming more informed. Over the last half decade or so, a lot has been written about the financial crisis. And Professor Baradaran has made a worthy contribution to this crisis library. She doesn’t spend a lot of time retreading what I’ve seen in other books—she doesn’t really trace the machinations associated with determining whether to save the banks, and which banks to save, or the details of the financial instruments that blew up, or much of the current intrigue.

Instead, she lays out the history of banking, with a focus on its relationship to the state. Banks, she explains, have been controversial in the United States since its founding; they’re essential to grow an economy and put money where it needs to go but, by gathering money together, banks can accrue outsized power and influence.

Originally, banks in the U.S. were local; only during the Civil War, when the country needed lots more money than it had, banks really become national. And even then, they were tightly regulated. That regulation ensured both that the banks received necessary support from the government, and that the banks were roughly democratic in how the treated depositors and borrowers. Even with regulation, though, banks tended to shift power to urban areas and to the wealthy, at the expense of the rural and the poor.

In her book, Professor Baradaran traces several good banking movements (including credit unions and savings and loans) that were originally meant to provide banking services to a broader population than the banking industry did. She also traces the downfall of these various attempts, as they either transformed into the banks they were meant to supplement, or otherwise failed.

As deregulatory pressures mounted, the banks managed to almost completely shake their social-contract obligations toward the poor, leaving the poor unbanked and at the mercy of expensive and sometimes-unsavory fringe lenders. She explains in significant detail why this state of affairs is bad, and recommends a solution (postal banking, but you’ll want to read her book to understand why).

I recommend buying two copies - one for yourself
By James P. Massar
Up until the 1980's or 1990's, banks existed not just for their own benefit, but, as Baradaran argues, they found themselves in an uneasy pact with the government - they were regulated and chartered by governments to provide some benefits to the people, while being allowed to make profit. Then the social compact was destroyed; banks are now allowed to operate with essentially no thought to the general welfare, and government has abdicated what little responsibility it once had.

Baradaran makes the strong case for Postal Banking (economies of scale, ubiquitous, non-profit), and notes that government's once-taken-on responsibility to provide banking services to more than the well to do could be revitalized thereof.

She also makes the case that the equivalent of payday lending is a necessary service that won't go away by attempting to regulate it out of existence, as some wish to do. In describing existing payday lending and its effects on those who use it she makes the case that an alternative is sorely needed; those who must rely on such services are being buried.

There is fascinating history here and clear writing which exposes a huge social problem. There is also a practical solution. I recommend buying two copies - one for yourself, and one to send to your US Representative.

Essential reading on the US banking system
By N. Hamilton
This book is an excellent primer on the history of banking in the United States, as well as a compelling argument for a significant political proposal.

I read this book with a couple of different brains. One was the brain of a girl who grew up "middle class poor" and experienced a lot of the instability Baradaran describes among the unbanked or working poor. In my understanding of our family's struggles, lack of credit was never a consciously felt harm. When we were strapped for cash, we never wondered how to get a loan or went to a payday lender--we either got help from our family, or we got evicted. If there had been an option to go to the post office and get a $300 loan to make rent this month, would we have used that? Would that have helped? If my single mom had atrocious credit, would we have been eligible? In my version of poverty, the philosophy was ALWAYS to find some way to go without rather than incurring any debt, but I realize now as an adult that debt is a key path to many for building enormous fortunes. I'm left with a question--is debt ever anything but a death sentence for the poor? The answer to most of these questions is "I don't know." My poor person brain sees this whole notion of providing easier, safer access to credit to the poor as just a tiny band-aid on the problem of poverty, and lands me back at the conclusion that fighting capital directly through organizing workers is the best bet the working class in this country has. Postal banking seems like it would be a helpful addition, but not a vehicle for structural change.

The other brain I used to read this book, though, was my history major, political brain, and that brain just ate it up. Chapter 2, "History of the Social Contract" between the banking industry and the state, should be required reading for every high school student of US history. I was a history nerd, and still my eyes glazed over in every discussion of Hamilton and Jefferson and their fight about the establishment of a national bank, and what exactly the Federal Reserve does, etc. etc.. Baradaran does an amazing job of opening up that history and making it accessible to non-banker types. (Not just accessible. Enjoyable!) And she makes a very compelling case that our current era, from the 1980s on, is a dramatic departure from anything else we've seen in the history of this country in terms of banking and the state. With this brain, this topic seems huge and important. This seems like a deep and invisible seam running through the whole story of economic inequality in this society, a shadow we need to bring to light.

This book is, without a doubt, hugely important. Baradaran brings a dogged focus to the needs of the poor; in a book about banking, this alone is refreshing. I almost want a sequel to get a more detailed about some of the issues she raised. She mentions that "Technology and market changes came first," before the avalanche of deregulation. Perhaps it was outside the purview of this book, but I want that broken down--what kinds of changes? How is this connected to the widescale "globalization" of the US manufacturing economy, and the all-out war on organized labor? Baradaran makes a point to mention how different eras of banking interacted with race--but the examples she mentions briefly just raise more questions for me, and leave me wanting a whole book on that topic. (Good news for me! I believe the author is currently writing that book!) I've always deliberately chosen to do business with a credit union over a bank, and this book diminished some of my optimism around that--I'd love a whole extra chapter devoted to the current day state of the credit union movement, and how they compare to banks. I loved how firmly Baradaran insisted that access to credit was not just an economic issue, but an issue that spoke to the overall health of our democracy. I would have LOVED to hear more from her about how the concentration of capital threatens political democracy. "How the Other Half Banks" provides an amazing survey of a lot of interconnected, complicated issues, and I think it's the sign of the writer's gift with words that it left me wanting more on the topic. The book probably wouldn't have gotten read very widely if it came out at 700 pages, so the amount of information and detail she did provide struck a healthy balance between educating the reader and making sure the information remained accessible.

While it's obvious that Baradaran feels passionately about the proposal to institute postal banking, she also does not pretend that it is the core solution to economic inequality and the ravages of capitalism. After reading this, I understand in a new way why credit tracking/rating/reporting is such a big deal in our society, and why capitalism is predicated on the infinite, suicidal need for endless growth. And, I still hate all that. I still think the way we go about it is so fundamentally broken that it would be best to just scrap it all and start over. But as long as we're stuck with this system, voices like Baradaran's are essential in ameliorating its harms and making it work a little better for as many people as possible.

"Secrets and silence caused all this."
By E. Bukowsky
Elizabeth George, in "Believing the Lie," examines how base emotions--greed, jealously, vengefulness, and lust, to name a few--destroy relationships and lives. The story focuses on the dysfunctional Faircloughs, whose patriarch, Bernard, married a wealthy woman and has run a successful family business for years. When a member of the clan dies in an apparent accident, Bernard calls in a favor. At his behest, Assistant Commissioner Sir David Hillier dispatches Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley of New Scotland Yard to Cumbria to discreetly look into the matter. With the help of his old friends, forensic specialist Simon St. James and Simon's wife, Deborah, Tommy tries to determine if someone had the motive, means, and opportunity to orchestrate the victim's death.

"Believing the Lie" is a lengthy, complex, and melodramatic tale that picks up some of the threads left dangling in the previous installment. Tommy, a grieving widower, uncharacteristically throws himself into an imprudent love affair. Deborah and Simon are despondent over her inability to bear a child. In addition, the self-deprecating, lonely, and good-hearted DS Barbara Havers is once again involved in the ups and downs of her neighbor, Taymullah Azhar, his partner, Angelina Upman, and their adorable daughter, Hadiyyah. Tommy, Deborah, Simon, and Barbara join forces to uncover the secrets of the Fairclough clan. Unfortunately, their efforts may ultimately do more harm than good.

The author has created a large and juicy cast. Among them are: Bernard's squabbling adult children; an ambitious but inept reporter; a monstrous mother; a gorgeous but reticent Argentinean woman; and an impulsive fourteen-year-old boy who soothes his emotional pain by injuring himself and behaving recklessly. This is more soap opera than whodunit, since prurient revelations, not sleuthing, dominate the proceedings. Lynley and company spend a great deal of time asking repetitive questions and, in the case of Havers, conducting endless Internet searches.

Ms. George is a skilled writer who beautifully integrates setting and story (readers will be tempted to visit the Lake District thanks to her evocative descriptions of the gorgeous English countryside), and she includes some delightful moments of much-needed humor. Although "Believing the Lie" holds our attention, it is weakened by an over-the-top plot and a surplus of angst-ridden characters who make one foolish mistake after another. Fans will welcome the return of Lynley, Simon, Deborah, and Barbara, but "Believing the Lie" has too much sensationalism and too little depth to rank among George's best work. (Three and a half stars.)

I'm Tired of Deborah
By lilian
It seems to me that the most repellant characters (I include Deborah in that group) just wander around here and there, wrecking other people's lives and never suffering much in the way of consequences--not even much of a dent to their self-satisfied little conscience. Whereas, the most likable characters (I include Barbara in this group) accumulate nothing but disaster, sorrow, and punishment. I know this is a work of fiction and perhaps the unrelenting campaign against Barbara, works to provide tension (will Charlie Brown EVER get to kick that football?) but for me, it makes reading these books increasingly dissatisfying. How many times is it possible to involve yourself in these characters, only to have things turn out this way? Even in real life, villains sometimes get their due and heroes sometimes catch a break. Lynley is not very likable in this book either--using others for dubious ends and putting them in the way of risk. Was he always so wimpy? I understand the heart has been cut out of him by Helen's death and I'm not suggesting he just "get over it". But I think it's time the stories moved beyond this.

The premise underlying the plot was so ridiculous, it made the investment in reading it feel like a big cheat. The pretext to involve Scotland Yard in this investigation and the motive for it, are insulting to any reader--even one who is willing to be co-operative in suspending judgment for the sake of a story.

I suppose I just disappointed. I enjoyed Elizabeth George's earlier books so much, that when I read something like this, I feel let down. The characters are not developing, they're wallowing. The story has so many threads. Perhaps the problem is the attempt to introduce so many important themes in one book, when they might have been dealt more satisfyingly in separate novels.

Ms. George is an excellent writer, and it's that quality that keeps me coming back, but if I have to be dragged through yet another "poor Deborah can't get past her barren state, followed by her obsessive, monstrously selfish pursuit of her own ends" book, I will give it a pass.

Three and a half stars/a good read
By A. Adams
I agree with other readers that the series is somewhat in decline, but I still enjoy the masterful writing skills employed by Elizabeth George. "Believing The Lie" is really more an exploration of the various ways that people deceive both themselves and others (and how that deceit comes back to haunt them) than it is a traditional mystery. If you are looking for a fast-paced whodunit and if you are not already familiar with the characters in the Lynley series than you probably won't like this book. If you enjoy George's writing style and her ability to spin a solid and engrossing tale, "Believing The Lie" delivers. I will continue to read Elizabeth George and she ends the book with a twist that will intrigue devoted fans of the series.

Remembering (Korea: 1950-1953)
By Dennis J. Ottley

Remembering (Korea: 1950-1953) is the author’s memoir. This book describes his involvement in Korea during the Korean War and points out the reasoning behind the conflict.

Over the years, the Korean War has been considered “The Forgotten War” by many. At one time, President Harry S. Truman referred to it as a “Police Action,” but 5,720,000 Americans who served in Korean have never forgotten what it was about and that it was much more than just a “Police Action.” They understand that it was an all-out war, and one of the bloodiest in American history. It involved over 20 countries of the United Nations that joined with the United States to save the South Koreans from annihilation and the tyranny of the communist countries, such as Russia and North Korea.

On July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed and today South Korea remains as a free nation and one of the strongest and wealthiest countries in Asia. This book is to help Americans understand what the war was all about and describe one soldier’s experience and opinion of the conflict.

About the Author

Dennis J Ottley was born on January 28, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He lived in many different towns throughout his childhood, but his family finally settled in Evanston, Wyoming. He quit high school at the start of his senior year and joined the 141st Tank Battalion of the Wyoming National Guard. About the same time he met a girl who he became very serious about and married on July 26, 1950.

When the Korean War started, Dennis’ guard unit was activated in September of 1950. In July 1951 Dennis was selected for overseas duty and was sent to Korea to help form a new tank company. After serving almost ten months in Korea as a tank gunner and tank commander, he was discharged on May 29, 1952.

Upon arriving home in Evanston, he immediately went back to work to make a new life for himself and his family. After a few years he became highly involved in his community and ended up serving three 4-year terms as a member of the Evanston City Council and three 4-year terms as Mayor.

Dennis was in business for himself most of his adult life and retired from his real estate agency at the end of 2013 at the age of 81. After raising four sons and 64 years of marriage, he and his wife Sandy still live in Evanston.

The Noticer Returns: Sometimes You Find Perspective, and Sometimes Perspective Finds You, by Andy Andrews

Perspective is a powerful thing.

Andy Andrews has spent the past five years doing a double take at every white-haired old man he sees, hoping to have just one more conversation with the person to whom he owes his life.

Through a chance encounter at a local bookstore, Andy is reunited with the man who changed everything for him – Jones, also known as “The Noticer.”

As the story unfolds, Jones uses his unique talent of noticing little things that make a big difference. And these “little things” grant the people of Fairhope, Alabama, a life-changing gift - perspective. Along the way, families will be united, financial opportunities will be created, and readers will be left with powerfully simple solutions to the everyday problems we all face.

Through the lens of a parenting class at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama, Jones guides a seemingly random group to ask specific questions inspired by his curious advice that “You can’t believe everything you think.” Those questions lead to answers for which people have been searching for centuries:

  • How do we begin to change the culture in which we live?
  • What is the key to creating a life of success and value?
  • What if what we think is the end…is only the beginning?
  • What starts as a story of one person's everyday reality unfolds into the extraordinary principles available to anyone looking to create the life for which they were intended.

    Andy Andrews on Steroids
    By Joey Hancock
First let me be very clear, I am a huge Andy Andrews fan. I live in the South and the Gulf Coast is a favorite vacation spot and often a haunt. Andy writes with an "I can't put his book down" touch. You laugh, learn and live better because of his books. All of that said, Andy swings his pen into stronger ink in The Noticer Returns. Strong, powerful life changing and affirming writing will capture the reader in the first few paragraphs. My wife and I stood and wept together over a two page passage where Andy helped us through a very hard place in our life with the recent death of both of our mothers. I am already buying copies and giving them away. This is a must read whether you are twelve or ninety two. Thank you Andy for pulling the gloves off Jones.

Andy is a modern day C.S. Lewis. You will not find a more talented story teller. I devoured this book and went right back and read it again. This book is sure to change how you look at life. This is NOT a book to be missed. If you enjoyed Jones and his wisdom in book one The Noticer you will welcome your friend right back in your life in book two. I highly recommend this 5 star book.

    Andy Andrews' BEST book yet!
    By Bonnie Bartel Latino
The author of America's beloved Forrest Gump says, "The Noticer Returns is a magical story that will change how you look at life." Far be it from me to quibble with a New York Times best-selling author, but I believe this a mystical story that will change how readers live."

Via a well-written story, which readers have come to expect from Andrews, the author details a simple, but profound, concept of parenting. The Noticer Returns has just flown to the top of my gift-giving list - especially for expectant parents.

One of the things I liked best was the profound nugget that perhaps America's "greatest generation" really wasn't. Is that blasphemy? Probably. However, Andrews illustrates that the real greatest generation was the one that raised the men and women who are accepted as our finest. Does that make sense? You bet it does. Had the men and women who fought and won World War II been raised by parents (and grandparents) who had different values and had made less time to raise their children, would their children have been willing to go through all they endured for years?

I was stunned to see the book dedicated to someone from my hometown of Atmore, AL, Dr. Will Baker. My guess is this book began with a conversational question from Dr. Baker: "The question is, what is the question?" I think Andy Andrews solved the maddening riddle --as only he could have--and this book is the result. I had to smile when I encountered the character of Baker Larson. Nice additional tip of the hat to Dr. Baker.

I have always believed Andy Andrews to be smart. The Noticer Returns shows new literary maturity--and downright brilliance. I have no doubt that his publisher knows this manuscript was worth the wait. Congratulations to author and publisher.

This book is truly the best of Andrews' unique career that began decades ago with what seemed his chance encounter under a pier with a man named Jones, not Mr. Jones. Just Jones.

Andy Andrews' only problem--and that of his publisher--now becomes . . . how do you top your own gold standard?

[Bonnie Bartel Latino is a former columnist for Stars and Stripes/Europe. She is co-author of the award-winning, inspirational military love story, Your Gift to Me.]

Fair disclosure: I received an advance paperback copy from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

First, the book is an easy read. Second, WOW IT WORKS! I know a couple of people who bought Mr. Lyden's (the author) book for College Students and they said it got them a job when nothing else worked. Well after reading this book I believe it! The book's approach is simple. It is advice from someone who recruits people in this difficult job market every day so he sees what works and what doesn't. And the traditional advice doesn't work! What is in this book is fresh, new, and very practical advice that is current and up-to-date. This is why it works.

This is a very difficult job market. Now I know what I was doing wrong...I was following the same advice the same approach as everyone else. That has not and will not work. But the advice in this book does.

Those who are unemployed, and even those looking for a better job, please do yourself a favor, buy the book!

The title doesn't lie, it works!
    By MSellars
I have used Mr Lyden's college version and I went from not getting an interview to getting an interview and a job all in one shot. It was a complete night and day switch and i couldn't have been happier with the result. Because that book helped me so much I have been a big advocator of his books. I tell everyone looking for a job that this the book you need. Its not very big and its not filled with fluff. Its filled with exactly what you need with zero confusion. That being said, my mother was not happy with her job anymore and needed a change and it had been 20+ years since she had been in the job market. Her resume was out of date, it had been forever since she has been through an interview. Overall she didn't know where to start so I tell her to buy this book and it walked her step by step in setting up her resume, how to perform in an interview and even how to go about talking about salary. This book gave her the tools to go out in a very difficult job market but not only that it gave her the courage to do so. I'm happy to say the book worked and she got a new job and she couldn't be happier. So proud of you mom!!!

    Thanks Mark Lyden!

A Concise Step by Step Process
    By Elizabeth C. Newcombe-Dierl
A great book that tells you just what you need to know and from someone who lives the stuff everyday! Mark Lyden takes you through every step of the job hunting process from start to finish. Each chapter is dedicated to one step in the hiring process from resumes (explaining how to handle electronic screening) to applying online. Additional chapters provide insight to job fairs, interviews and how to negotiate salary and more! The book mixes a few pertinent experiences of Mark's along the way only to make a point more relevant. As a result of reading this book, I have a better understanding of how the process works in this competitive job market and realize why I need to change my approach. I plan on practicing what I have learned; putting Mark's advice to the ultimate test.
Overall, a concise read, packed with practical advice from a man in the field with demonstrated success. A must read for the serious job hunter!

Pathophysiology: A Clinical Approach, by Carie A. Braun PhD RN, Cindy M. Anderson WHNP-BC FAAN

The Second Edition of Pathophysiology offers a unique clinical approach that facilitates learning by viewing pathophysiology as health care professionals do. Whereas a traditional systems-based approach impractically isolates diseases to a single body system, this textbook's approach recognizes how disease affects multiple systems. Additionally, rather than covering only a limited number of diseases, aiming for rote memorization of the key factors in those diseases, the clinical approach details the mechanisms of disease. By mastering the core concepts of altered human function, students can apply a deeper understanding to a host of diseases, rather than trying to memorize facts about specific conditions. Because students learn through application, they learn to think about pathophysiology the way they will need to in a clinical setting, by working from symptoms to the cause, rather than the other way around. Each chapter discusses clinical models, enhancing the real-world application of the material.

I'm already half way through the class and this textbook is amazing, very easy to read, they get to the point. If you don't know your anatomy/physiology or microbiology you WILL have a difficulty with this book. A lot of the reading expects you to have a good knowledge base on Anatomy/Physiology and microbiology.

    Ok but basic
    By Kelley J
I used this book for a graduate level pathophysiology class and while some of the information was great, I felt at times like I was reading an entry level basic pathophysiology book, even high school. Some of the chapters were more beneficial than others but for a graduate course I really feel I needed something with more detail. On the plus side, it wasn't difficult to move through the material in this book as it is in some high level books.

    Good book!
    By Belinda S.
Great book, easy to read and understand. This book came in condition as described and shipping was quick! Great for anyone trying to learn more about paths phys! The author makes things easy to understand, there are lot of pictures and diagrams. I appreciated the easy way that it was written with a good mix of words and pictures. In my pharm book the print is VERY small (microscope anyone?) so this book was a nice change since the font is of a good size and there aren't too many words on the page. The pages are a bit flimsy as this is a paper back book so you have to be careful not to turn pages to quickly or cram it into your book bag or it will quickly get beat up. The pages highlight well and it does not bleed onto the next page so for someone like me who likes to make lots of notes and highlighting it was great!
