Vitamin C and the Common Cold, by Linus Pauling

By following the simple, inexpensive and safe regimen described in this book, you can greatly reduce your chances of catching cold and, at the same time, improve your general health. So contends its Nobel Prize-winning author Linus Pouling. Despite widespread popular belief in its effectiveness in preventing and combatting the common cold, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is still discounted by many medical and nutritional authorities s a useful preventative treatment. Now Professor Pauling, after carefully reexamining the evidence and conducting his own tests, concludes that when properly used this naturally occurring food substance - far safer than the drugs usually prescribed or recommended for colds - is thoroughly effective in both the prevention and the alleviation of the common cold and related diseases.

Linus Pauling is a real hero
By Jodi-Hummingbird
Linus Pauling is a real hero to me and his intelligence, logic and compassion for people come through on every page of this book. The world would be a far better place with more people like him in it.

Having said that, after reading this book I do think it is clear he continually honed his message and the basic points he wanted to make about nutrition and orthomolecular medicine as time went on. For that reason I would recommend reading Pauling's book 'How to Live Longer and Feel Better' above this earlier (though still excellent and historially very important) book.

'How to Live Longer and Feel Better' includes a lot of the excellent vitamin C infomation contained in this book but also so much more. The discussion has a lot more depth, more research is quoted and practical advice is given about a basic but fairly complete orthomolecular program and not just how much vitamin C to take. It is pretty wonderful.

This is a slightly paraphrased version of Pauling's basic regimen for a healthy life:
* Take 6 - 18 g of vitamin C daily
* Take 400 IU, 800 IU or 1600 IU of natural vitamin E daily
* Take 1 - 2 B vitamin supplements daily
* Take 25 000 IU of vitamin A daily
* Take a multimineral tablet daily
* Keep your intake of sugar low
* Eat what you like in moderation, but avoid sugar. Meat and eggs are good, and fruit and vegetables are good. Don't eat too much of any one food and don't eat so much that you become overweight.
* Drink plenty of water
* Keep active, but do not severely overexert yourself physically.
* Drink alcohol in moderation only
* DO NOT SMOKE CIGARETTES
* Avoid stress, work at a job you like, be happy with your family.

This is just such a great and simple list, I had to type it out for those who can't read/afford the book. (Note that Pauling comments that the amounts given for supplements are for healthy people, and that those suffering serious illness may need higher doses of some of these, including vitamin C to bowel tolerance.)

It's appalling that more than 20 years after this book was published, the same old scaremongering (ie. lying!) about the safety of vitamins and their effectiveness is still going on, and people are still being told vitamins are not safe, helpful or necessary and that all that is needed is a balanced diet. (A nice story, but one that isn't based on fact.) Sadly, the same old nonsense that Pauling describes, where vitamin studies are set up to fail by those who want to prove that vitamins don't work, is still happening; doses much smaller than would be effective are used, the time periods are too short to allow the vitamin to actually work, and so on. Many different studies are quoted in a lot of detail, thus Pauling's arguments are very convincing.

Pauling had high hopes that all this was about to start changing and that soon vitamins would become far more accepted and used in mainstream medicine. To some extent that has happened, but for the most part little has really changed. It's quite depressing.

I'm very passionate about vitamin C due to the amazing books on it I have read, and all the accounts by doctors that were or are vitamin C experts and also because of the impact it has had on my own life and the lives of others I know. I got this book of Pauling's because I had heard that it went into detail about why humans lost the ability to synthesise vitamin C, and why it is almost impossible to regain this ability even if it would not be very beneficial for humans to do so. And it did. I now understand that issue much better than I did before.

Other excellent vitamin C books include Ascorbate: The Science of Vitamin C and Vitamin C: The Real Story, the Remarkable and Controversial Healing Factor and The Healing Factor: "Vitamin C" Against Disease (available free online) plus articles online by Dr Cathcart and Dr Klenner and most of all probably, the books Primal Panacea and 'Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins' by the brilliant Dr T Levy. These last 2 books are about the only ones I know of which also discuss liposomal vitamin C which allows you to get many/all of the benefits of IVC orally. Liposomal vitamin C is wonderful stuff whether you're using it to maintain health, prevent or treat a cold or flu or any other disease.

A big thank you to all the vitamin C pioneers!

A wonderful book reflecting the ture diversity of humanity!
By huevalueintensity
I had a hard cover copy of this book years ago that I lent to a family member and it was never returned to me. I am happy to get a new copy of this old classic which contains mostly short stories. Despite the length of most of the folk-tales it is still a joy to read, it covers a wide range of cultures and countries so there is something for everyone. What I find most interesting regarding the book is the different views that each folk-tale/ country holds in regards to daily struggles, happiness, dreams, and life in general. The different perspective are both appreciated and represented well in this book.

The Best Folktales!
By Sara M. Urbano
I purchased this book for a college class. This anthology has all of the western classics (whose versions I recall from Disney movies) and so many more that I have never read before. Some tales are suitable for children and I have ready several to mine.

The tales are organized geographically; for example, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Western Europe, etc. In the back of the book there is a list of themes like journeys and quests, ogres and trolls, and so on.

Wonderful all-in-one collection of folktales
By Nels Nelson
This is a fantastic collection of folktales. They come from all over the world, with some familiar and others not. Most are excellent for reading out-loud, and my children enjoy listening to them.

The only complaint I have is that I purchased a copy after borrowing the book from the library, and while both the library copy and the one sent from Amazon are paperbacks, the copy I received is printed on very cheap paper, bordering on newsprint. I'm doubtful the pages can hold up to many years of reading.

Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer (Osprey Modelling), by Mark Bannerman

Adding a figure to a kit or display can increase both depth and interest, yet building and painting figures continues to be a source of frustration to many armour modelers. This book provides full details on how to build and integrate realistic Heer Panzer crew figures with their vehicles, and on how to paint the key uniform variants and patterns worn by these distinctive troops.

It begins with a brief discussion of the various mediums (plastic, resin and white metal), and a round up of the tools, materials and aftermarket items suitable for building and super-detailing figures. Using differing theatres and periods of the war, it shows how to paint common clothing types and patterns, such as the black panzer uniform, Splittermuster, feldgrau, and fatigues, as well as unique and fascinating variants such as Russian camouflage fabric and the motorcycle rubber coat.

Special effects, such as dust-covering, and the addition of equipment and and other details are also covered in clear, step-by-step tutorials. The book will also challenge and inspire the more experienced crew figure modeler, with clearly explained 'kit-bashing' and scratch-building demonstrations, making this a treatment of the subject with wide appeal.

Although weell photographed and documented, I was let down by this volume in the Osprey Modelling series. Maybe if the publisher had named it "Painting Panzer Crewmen of the Heer" I wouldn't be as disappointed. To it's credit, the book does go into very good detail concerning painting Panzer crewmen, but I think that the concept of modeling goes a bit farther than just painting. Very little of this book deals with topics like figure conversions, changing facial expressions, and scratchbuilding figures. A good reference, but I think that Osprey could have done a bit better.

Good beginner figure painting book
By Thomas Paine
If you like modeling 1/35th or 1/48th scale German armor and have wanted to add figures, this book is for you. The core of the text covers painting WWII panzer crewmen in miniature using enamels and oils and only lightly touches on conversions and scupting.

The basic uniforms covered include:
Panzer Black (The most common uniform worn)
Afrika Korp (also known as Tropical uniform)
Reed Green Denim (introduced in 1942)

The focus of the work is the use of shading and hilighting techniques with enamel paints to create a realistic looking uniform in miniature. The author begins with the Panzer Black uniform which is very easy and a great place to start for a beginner. The author then moves on to Afrika Korp and Reed Green Denim uniforms which are not really much harder.

The book has further sections on painting faces, sculpting figures and weathering uniforms. The face painting section is very good but requires a commitment to the use of artists oils. Using artist oils is a little tricky and more advice there would have been nice. However, face painting with oils, once mastered, will deliver a great result. The section on sculpting is really too brief and was the least useful to me.

Overall this is a grood book for anyone struggling to start adding figures to their German armor models.

Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer
By Walter A. Jacque
In modeling and painting military miniatures, there have been very few that were decent enough to be a constant reference. First was Peter Blum's "Model Soldiers" (published, by the way, by Imrie/Risley). Then we had Almark's work by Roy Dilley and D.S.V. Fosten. Unfortunately in both works, we had drawings, but no photos of actual work.

Now we have "Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer," and what a nice work it is! Bannerman's photos and descriptions of how he painted the cover figure are well worth the price of the book. The book also has articles on converting and painting an early war panzer officer as well as an article on how to do 1/48 figures (good also for aircraft figures). In fact, this is one of those books that transcends the subject matter, as anyone can use Bannerman's painting tips on other figures from other nations, as well as time periods.

Perhaps surpassing this book is the bonus DVD put out by "Armor Models" magazine (out of print, pity), but this is mostly in Japanese (no subtitles), with one part in English featuring MMiR's Pat Stancil. Still, "Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer" is well-worth the price, and is an excellent reference work on light conversions and painting figures.
