Good college textbook

I actually got this book for a class that I am taking. I bought it new thinking that I would be writing and highlight in it like a overachiever that I am, but interestingly enough that wasn't the case. The book was great if you knew how the medical system in the U.S. works but I could see people outside of their element with this book. Managed Care is a hard theory to get your head wrapped around if you have never worked in the healthcare field and don't understand what goes on "behind the scenes" for that doctor or that Physician Assistant does to actually see you in a hospital or doctor's office. It's a fairly think book for the major concepts introduced and some of the descriptions and definitions were a bit hard to understand due to their vagueness. I do refer back to it mostly for class but it's a good book.

An honest book that does what it sets out to do-give an overview of the subject. Although texts such as this suffer from the ravages of time on relevance it is still preferable to the inefficiency of trying to educate yourself about these subjects on the internet.

I love this book and have already made several recipes from ...

On the one hand, I love this book and have already made several recipes from it! And they taste fantastic! On the other hand, I wish every recipe had a picture, simply because I have no idea what the final product is supposed to look like-- I've never even heard of a lot of these recipes. Also, some of the steps, I wish there was more detail-- I've ended up doing more guesswork than I'd like. All in all, a welcome​ addition to my recipe book collection!

A great find

I bought this book after having found (and tested) the recipe for conchas that Chow.com posted on their review of the book (The chow.com review mentions that their dough didn't rise, but for me the dough did rise quite a bit in one hour).

The taste was so true to the sweet bread I grew up eating as a kid in Mexico, that I immediately bought the book.

Once the book arrived I was amazed at some of the recipes listed there, some of them hard to find, that I had to share it with my female relatives. Long story short, my aunt has the original book and I just purchased a second book for myself.

The recipes included there that I really look forward to try:

Chongos zamoranos
Cajeta
Natilla
Pastel de tres leches (to compare to my family recipe) AND chocolate pastel de tres leches
calabaza en tacha
limones rellenos de coco
rosca de reyes
rosquillas de naranja
pan de muerto
alegrias
gaznates
alfajor
camotitos poblanos
mazapanes de cacahuate

...just to name a few.

The historical/research tidbits before each chapter are also greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get my second book!

How do you say YUM in Spanish?

My love affair with Mexican food arrived one day in 1952 when my mother received a "care package" from friends in the Southwest stuffed full of "Mexican" food. I suspect I've never had a worse tamale, but those canned tamales sparked a life-long pursuit of the the "best" in tacos and tamales and salsas by the dozens. And of course, I've been collecting Mexican cookbooks ever since - a fairly substantial chunk of the ethnic section of my collection (over 400 but I've lost count!).

You don't have to spend much time in Mexico or have many Mexican friends to realize that sweets are a huge part of Mexican culture - and you don't have to visit many "Mexican" restaurants here in the US or read through many Mexican cookbooks to realize that there simply must be more than fried ice cream, churros, and a couple of cookie recipes. With My Sweet Mexico: Recipes for Authentic Pastries, Breads, Candies, Beverages, and Frozen Treats, Fany Gerson fills a huge void, both on my library shelves and in my kitchen. My only problem? What to make first. . . . . tamales? or maybe that sweet potato candy? Milk fudge? Something frozen? HMMMMM . . .

Beautiful book, highly recommended. This is a book you will treasure for a long time.

Better than Big Katz for Med Students

For medical students, this book is significantly better than its counterpart, "Big Katzung." This version is more succinct and focuses on the clinically important concepts and drugs. The review questions are also great for assessing knowledge. There are occasionally subjects covered in "Big" Katzung that don't translate to the small version, so keep that in mind, but generally these are low yield. Overall, a better purchase than the big version for most pharmacology needs.

Good questions, but review is not quite as comrehensive as compared to LIR Pharmacology. If you don't have the time for Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, LIR is a better bet. I wish that they had simply added the questions to the Basic and Clinical Pharmacology so I wouldn't have to buy this book for them and put out slightly more comprehensive review version with the same questions for those that are time-strapped.

Jesse Ventura is the former Independent governor of Minnesota and wrote four other books. Dick Russell is an award-winning author. David Wayne in an investigative journalist. This book has "63 reasons to believe there was a conspiracy to assassinate JFK". "The Katzenbach Memo" explains the need for a "lone gunman" theory to satisfy the American people and elsewhere by using a Presidential Commission to provide an answer (p.ix). The `Introduction' provides the conclusions that follow the given evidence in the sixty-three chapters. The House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded it probably was a conspiracy. The comment on Dan Rather ignores the fact that TV reporters, like actors, speak what they're told to say or are replaced (p.xiii). Eisenhower warned against the "Military-Industrial Complex". This has resulted in the highest spending and taxes in history, and less for other areas (p.xvii). The chapters are grouped into four sections. "The Evidence" has chapters 1 to 28. "The Cover-Up" has chapters 29 to 48. "The Witnesses" has chapters 49 to 53. "The Why, Who, and How" has chapters 54 to 63. There is no `Index' or `Bibliography' (aside from the footnotes), or photographs.

The `Conclusion' provides a summary (p.335). The authors say the USA is run by the rich and privileged, rights are being taken away from the people (p.337). "America is a nation that is now virtually in a perpetual state of war around the globe." Does the US military (and the forces they represent) dominate foreign policy? The conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are cited (p.338). The so-called "Patriot Act" can deprive the rights of any American accused of "terrorism" (p.339). Former President Jimmy Carter said it was good to reveal the extent of NSA spying. Was this censored in the corporate media (p.340)? Is the "War on Terror" a scam to reduce spending on programs for the good of the people (p.342)? The Joint Chiefs of Staff urged a thermo-nuclear war (p.344)! Page 345 lists the policies needed to restore democracy in America. The War on Iraq has squandered money that could have provided universal health coverage at home, and other benefits (p.349).

Ventura believes "education" will benefit our country. Don't we have the best educated people in history today, and the worst economic depression since the 1920s-1930s? Wealth comes from production, agricultural or manufacturing. To produce wealth in America we need a 25% tariff on imported goods and services. This will balance the budget, save Social Security and Medicare, and reduce unemployment. This worked in the late 19th century, and can work again. We also need to cut back on military spending. High spending on the military correlates to higher joblessness. Chapter 23 tells how a Psychological Stress Evaluation measures stress (or lying) in a person's voice. This tested Oswald's voice and concluded he was telling the truth [or was crazy]. There is another obvious fact about his statement. The assassins of Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley all boasted of their actions. So too the attempts on FDR, Truman, and Ford. Oswald alone denied the shooting, saying he was just a fall guy. Was he truthful or crazy? Did his actions show craziness? The week after JFK's death `TIME' magazine wrote that "Kennedy was the victim of a lone assassin, just like Lincoln". A Helping Book that Does Help

I used this book in a class at UC Berkeley. It is easy to read and understand. And the information it continues is priceless for those going into the helping field. It is wonderfully spelled out how a person can be so helpful to another by just listening. It is an easy concept, but one that takes practice to master. "The Art of Helping" took me on a journey of practicing listening to people. For those wanting to be great counselors, or even just good listeners for your friends, this book is imperative.

It discusses consensus conferences as social epistemic institutions designed to embody democracy and achieve objectivity. Evidence-based medicine, which developed next, ranks expert consensus at the bottom of the evidence hierarchy, thus challenging the authority of consensus conferences. Evidence-based medicine has transformed both medical research and clinical medicine in many positive ways, but it has also been accused of creating an intellectual hegemony that has marginalized crucial stages of scientific research, particularly scientific discovery. Translational medicine is understood as a response to the shortfalls of both consensus conferences and evidence-based medicine. Narrative medicine is the most prominent recent development in the medical humanities. Its central claim is that attention to narrative is essential for patient care. Solomon argues that the differences between narrative medicine and the other methods have been exaggerated, and offers a pluralistic account of how the all the methods interact and sometimes conflict. The result is both practical and theoretical suggestions for how to improve medical knowledge and understand medical controversies.

Her first book was Social Empiricism (MIT Press, 2001) and she is the author of many articles in philosophy of medicine, philosophy of science, gender and science, epistemology and bioethics. She is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
