IF ONLY there was a real Shadowlands!

There is just no writer quite like Cherise Sinclair in this genre! Her books provide wonderful fantasies, but with a realistic turn with the various BDSM practices she depicts. Her Doms are always loving and careful of their subs, and this newest in the Shadowlands series is no exception. Anyone reading the previous 7 books in the series is well aquainted with Sally, and knows that she has problems connecting with any but the strongest of Doms. But there turns out to be so much back story that runs under the surface, and most of it isn't that great. It all comes to a head for her when she gets into a bad relationship. Of course, she needs 2 Federal Agents to come to her rescue! They not only protect her from further abuse at the hands of her ex, they dig into her problems that have made it hard for her to ask for what she needs or wants.

There is still an unresolved bit of business with the northeast quadrant of the Harvest Association dogging the Feds, and Sally gets hold of some information she can exploit to help locate the head of the organization. She and the Feds have a final scene with a member of this organization. Then the Shadowlands Doms celebrate the end of the organization.

All our old friends make appearances in the book, most notably Dan and Kari, Nolan and Beth, and of course, Master Z and Jessica. Gabi helps Sally with a dilemma and gets in a few zingers, and Marcus keeps her from going overboard! All the others are at least mentioned. I have always loved Dan and Kari since book #2 and was glad to read more about them. Nolan has a heart of pure gold and it shows in this book! I love Gabi and Marcus and their complimentary senses of humor. Well, darn it, I just love them all, and it was great to catch up!

Now a few words about Cherise's writing style. She is really tops! Her rhetorical devices follow a pattern I've noticed in the other books, where she uses similes/metaphors based on the characters' occupations to make points. In this book, it's Sally's occupation working with computers. For example, when she starts to think about possibly loving the Feds, "She deleted that thought before it could even run. Reboot. Back to the subroutine programmed for sex, please." Computer-ese is scattered throughout the book. Usually, there is a pet (an animal one, besides the subbie, LOL) in either the Dom's or sub's home, most often a cat. It's obvious Cherise loves the critters and understands them well. The cat's disdain for humans except when a human can fill a need such as feeding, petting, grooming, petting, staying out of its way, petting (get the picture?) is well depicted!

The thing that really gets me coming back is the humor in these books. Some of the scenes have me laughing out loud, so hard I'm in danger of wetting myself! The sub character Gabi is always good for some real zingers, but she also has had a baaaad influence on the other subs! Her Master, Marcus has such a great sense of humor, he handles her smart-ass comments with a laugh and a hard hand to make her ass smart!

There is always such kindness and caring among the Shadowlands family of characters, they keep pulling me in. I thank Cherise for her skill and hard work in coming up with yet another winner from the Shadowlands!

Emotional, Sexy thrill ride!

If Only is the second Masters of the Shadowlands book that I have made TOP PICK on the blog. I can't begin to tell you how fantastic Sally's story was. I think it's because I have grown so fond of Sally over the past books that I wanted to dive right into her story. God, how much I have missed the Shadowlands. The Shadowlands is more than a place where people can live their lifestyle out in the open, it's a safe haven for some people. Cherise Sinclair does an amazing job of transporting us to a place where we can hear the cracking of whips and smell the leather all around us, and actually we are just in the confines of our bedroom. People read to escape their lives for a bit, and you really do that with IF ONLY. Believe me when I say, you will not want to leave the Shadowlands or the family that you will fall in love with while you are there.

"You'll have us both inside you, pushing you past thinking, past reason. You won't have any control, sweetheart. We're going to take it all away."

Now, if you are familiar with this series, than you know the type of submissive that Sally is. She has been a trainee at the Shadowlands forever, and she knows how these Doms work. She knows how to push their buttons. When she returns to the Shadowlands after getting out of a bad relationship, she is shut down, not like the Sally we all know and love. Galen Kouros and Vance Buchanan, or "The Feds," notice this in Sally, and decide that they want to soothe whatever is hanging over their spitfire submissive. They both attempt to help Sally with an enormous amount of push back from their little sub. Ugly pasts from all three come to light and threatens their relationship. The past isn't the only thing threatening their lives. The Harvest Association is still out there, and Sally, Galen, and Vance will have to confront the past, and fight for the future they all desperately want and need.

If Only was a gritty, tough, love story that was so full of emotion, it definitely had me captivated the whole way through. Even though it was tough to read, I am glad Cherise made us dive in to the past of all three of these amazing characters. I love when such broken souls find their way to each other and even though it's hard, heal each others hearts. The fact that Galen and Vance were different in so many aspects, made them a perfect match for Sally.

The side stories in IF ONLY broke my heart. Just when you thought the other couples from The Shadowlands were solid, life gets in the way. Not everything is perfect anymore for the couples we know and love. Our favorite characters return: Rainie, Kari, Gabi, Jessica, Dan (who you will love even more after this), and of course Master Z. The love and support that they show Sally was beautiful. They all think of her as theirs, and they protect what's theirs...ALWAYS.

"You are a gift I never expected,"

If Only was filled with excitement and emotional roller coasters all the way through. The BDSM scenes were spectacular, and the tender loves scenes were off the charts HOT. Another freaking HOME RUN and MUST READ for the Shadowlands Series! Cherise Sinclair can do NO WRONG!

What happened to Sally

I have loved Sally since she was first introduced into the series. If Only the author had actually written a book about that character instead of deciding that as with all her other books the female character had to be damaged. The bright, happy character we have seen in other books barely makes an appearance and instead is insecure, unhappy and not fun to read about. And she isn't the only character whose story suddenly changes. Dan and Kari who feature prominently had a sudden change to their back story as well. There was a time interval during which books in this series weren't coming out due to some publishing issue. Sadly the author who came back from that is not the same one who was writing before. This is the second book and it is obvious just what a downward slide is happening.

They also include a few funny cartoons but more importantly they have those highlighted main points for each step and then explain the step right after that. They also include the tips with the usual For Dummies bulls eye and arrow to highlight each tip.

You also get the grayed sections of other useful and helpful information that did not really fit into the chapters and paragraphs but still helpful information. They have included plenty of helpful information and advice from how to shop for a bike to how a bike shop runs their business by helping you to buy parts and bikes.

Bike Repair & Maintenance For Dummies is a great step by step manual with all that extra content to not only help you with your bike but with many decisions in biking like purchasing new parts or even a new bike. Bike Repair & Maintenance For Dummies is well worth the cost and one of those must have books for anyone who wants to save money by doing even the simple stuff on your bike.

One thing I like with the For Dummies book is the step by step guides that have the necessary parts highlighted for easy repair and adjustment while you're actually doing it. When the book is lying open on the toolbox and you have a wrench in hand trying to figure out what to do next its right there in bold.

This book has such an excellent insight into how to repair and maintain your bike like a professional. Each step or problem that a rider may face is carefully instructed for you so that you have all the steps necessary to do an excellent job! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn new skills about keeping your bike in shape and also those who just want to learn more about the mechanics of bikes! Overall great book!!

Not Quite What the Title Suggests

I bought this book because I wanted to learn about how to keep my bike working well. I take it in to the professionals when something actually breaks or wears out or otherwise needs serious fixing, but I wanted to learn about my bike's everyday needs and workings. Sadly, this book turns out not to be what I wanted, as it focuses almost entirely on the "Repair" mentioned in the title and very little on "Maintenance."

What would you say are the few biggest misconceptions around practice?

Though we’ve found there are actually more than a few misconceptions about practice, here are three:

• Myth 1: Practice to improve your weaknesses. Not true. You should in fact focus on practicing strengths. You’ll get stronger results this way.
• Myth 2: Stop practicing when you achieve competence. Nope. What marks champions is their excellence at something—they may have weaknesses, but their strengths are honed and polished to the level of brilliance. The value of practice begins at mastery!
• Myth 3: Practice is dull. Wrong. It certainly has a reputation for being a bleak necessity and the primary provenance of children laboring over trombones and basketballs. But in fact, practice is fun, exciting, and ideal for adults.

How do you suggest people incorporate the right kind of practice into their daily lives?

There are many ways. One concrete idea is to practice with a partner. Find a peer who cares as much as you do about some key aspect of your work and schedule ten (fun) minutes, three times a week, to work on the skills you’re both interested in developing.

What does each of you practice in your professional or personal lives?

Doug: I practice a lot with my kids. They’re athletes—soccer players and skiers, especially. It’s my goal to help them be good at something they care about. And though I played soccer in college, I think back with sadness at how much better I wanted to be and how much time I spent trying to get better on my own when, in retrospect, I was wasting my time. I learned how to handle the ball only long after college. And so, in addition to wanting to help my kids succeed at the things they love, I want to model for them how to get better at things throughout their lives, so they never have to feel that. One bright spot, one thing I think was very helpful to them as soccer players, is the two-footed drill. I started having them do it when they were younger to get them natural and fluid at two of the core building blocks of soccer—being able to use both feet and being in the habit of redirecting your first touch. In the two-footed drill, we pass the ball back and forth, but you have to receive the ball with one foot, transfer it to the other foot on the first touch, and pass it back with that foot—in one fluid motion. Always two feet; always two touches. And the focal point is the speed of the foot-to-foot process. Once my kids got it down, we just kept doing it, over and over. We do it every time we warm up, so they are fluid, natural, and automatic. It’s definitely made them much more fundamentally sound at the game. It’s also allowed them to allocate their brain power to thinking about what to do with the ball when they get it in the game, since they’re pretty automatic at receiving.

Erica: In my professional life, what I find myself practicing most are the presentations that I have to give in front of large audiences. In preparing for a presentation, after I have created and revised my materials, I carefully script my talking points. I then practice delivering the presentation quietly to myself; when I am ready, I ask a colleague to watch a small section and give feedback on any part that is new or particularly challenging for me. My final step the morning of the presentation is usually to practice in front of a full-length mirror. The first time I did this (after getting over feeling incredibly awkward) I learned so much about my non-verbal communication. I saw myself shifting my weight frequently from foot to foot, and I realized that signaled a lack of confidence to my audience. Every time I practice with a mirror, I learn something new about what I am signaling to my audience. In my personal life I practice with my kids, but not in the traditional sense of the word. My oldest son is only four, so he is still too young for the consistent practice of a particular sport or hobby, but he and his little brother are not too young to benefit from practice. For example I realized recently that our bedtime routine (from brushing our teeth to heads asleep on pillows) was taking entirely too long. So I planned how to streamline it, explained it to them step-by-step, and we practiced it a few times around 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. That first night, they were excited about the new “Bedtime Club,” and we followed all the steps to a tee–cutting bedtime in half. We then practiced it consistently for a week or so, and now everybody in our house feels a little less stress in the evenings.

Katie: I try to practice difficult conversations that I know I need to have with colleagues or the parents of the students in the school I lead. I usually practice with my managing director, and that almost always includes me taking notes as he models what that conversation might sound like. In particular, I write down key phrases in outline format to ensure I remember the key points and make them clearly. I run through what I want to say a couple times in that moment, and I usually do it again as I drive home. Then, I review my notes right before I have the conversation. Practice definitely helps me to stay calm and confident when emotions are high. In my personal life, I play and practice Ultimate Frisbee. I’ve played for over 20 years, but what I practice most are the basic skills of throwing and catching. I notice that it makes a huge difference in my pass completion during games if I have practiced completing passes before playing. That kind of practice makes me more focused and more confident.

A book with broad application

One of the top reviews claims this is just for educators. I don't get it as this is full of non-educational examples. But also let's face it, this is a book about learning how to get better. It is ultimately about education applied to life. As I tell my kids, everyone in life needs to be a manager and a teacher whether they like the job or not, even if they are just managing their own lives and teaching themselves. I began applying principles from this book almost immediately after starting it in everything from my basketball game to how I teach my kids.

As you will learn from the book, just reading it won't do a thing for you. You will have to practice the rules for yourself. But if you do, I think you will be richly rewarded.

Although this book is primarily geared toward teachers, many of the lessons are applicable in a variety of professions: coaching, managing/leading a business, etc. I coach high school basketball, and I'm walking away with tons of great actionable items that will be implemented in our practices.

This books is not just largely for educators. This book changed my life. It breaks down specific myths of "work hard" and really goes into the specifics of how to focus on what really drives performance. Focused, deliberate practice. I've never written an Amazon review before but this book is a game changer.
