I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique cultural commentary ...

Having read the Croatian version of this book, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique cultural commentary and a good laugh. As a Croatian-American woman married to a very un-ethnic American man, I feel more than qualified to proclaim that Cody's observations are spot-on. He comments on many aspects of Croatian culture - coffee, drafts through windows, gift-giving, friendships- that we Croatians accept as normal but others may find intriguing or sometimes even...weird. My husband has often wondered why my mom offers him slippers when we go visit, and why she puts more food on his plate than anyone else's (including her own children).
This book should be mandatory reading for any inter-ethnic couple, as its humorous anectodes and observations would apply to anyone in a relationship with an "foreigner" - not just Croatian. Order it and be prepared to spit out your espresso as you read and laugh out loud!

What to know more about Croatia, read this book!

I love this book. When I bought it, I knew what to expect since I follow the author's blog, but even then I simply adore this book.

'Chasing a Croatian girl' shows Croatian habits and customs, but in a funny way never demeaning them. As a Croatian all of those customs makes perfect sense, but it was nice to see the other side of it.

Funny and Endearing Look at Cultural Differnces

It is clear that Cody Brown has spent considerable time in Croatia. He is right on target when he talks about the differences in culture between Croatia and America. I laughed out loud when reading many of his thoughts regarding the many differences: drinking coffee, overbearing mother-in-laws, drafts from open windows, partying and neighbors. He went off track, however, in chapter 24 "Wild West vs Mild West" and gun violence in America. In all the previous chapters Brown emphasized the closeness of families, the genuineness of the people, the love of children, the positive attitudes toward real friendships and the tolerance of others. He even admits that other countries like Serbia has a similar number of guns per capita and then somehow explains that gun violence in America is due to the proliferation of guns and gun ownership. If he would only read his earlier chapters regarding the Croatian commitment to family, friendships and their respect for human life and compare those aspects with American culture he might just stumble on the real answers to his own question: Why is there more violence in America and why is Croatia a safer place to live? Those many differences that he found both funny and endearing in Croatian culture are the very reasons why it is safer to walk down the streets of any major Croatian city than one in America.

With that one exception, I would strongly recommend the book to anyone who wants to get a fresh view of not only the Croatian culture, but a fresh look at their own non-Croat culture. It is clear that Cody Brown has developed both a love and understanding of his adopted country.

This is the fourth Inspector Bordelli mystery, following on from Death in August, Death and the Olive Grove and Death in Sardinia. Set in 1966, it features both Bordelli and the cast of characters you will be familiar with from earlier books if you have followed the series - Piras, Diotivede, the lovable Rosa and others. Bordelli is now within touching distance of retirement age and the shadow of the war still hangs heavily on him. In fact, the memories of the war are not only Bordelli's, but feature heavily within the book; with supporters of 'Il Duce' as his only suspects in a particularly heinous crime. For a thirteen year old boy has gone missing and, when his body is found, he has been drugged, strangled and abused by several men. As Bordelli worries that this will become an "unsolved case", he feels disatisfied with life generally - he rebels against authority, befriends those on the fringes of crime and society, longs for a woman to share his life and muses on the possibility of a gentler life in the country. As the rain pours relentlessly down, Inspector Bordelli is adamant that he will bring justice to the young boy and his family; while having the premonitions of Rosa's friend in the back of his mind.

Author Marco Vichi was born in Florence in 1957. He is the author of twelve novels and two collections of short stories and "Death in Florence" won the Scerbanenco, Rieti, Camaiore and Azzeccagarbugli prizes in Italy. If you have read the earlier books and enjoyed them, then I can safely say that you will enjoy this. If you haven't read any, it is probably best to begin with the first in the series, "Death in August". These are not fast moving mysteries and the books are as much about Bordelli's life and thoughts as the investigation. However, I certainly hope there are more books in the series for us to enjoy and think the novels have a wonderful sense of place and time.

Amazing Italy soon after WWII

Get ready to see Florence as you have never seen it before! This series takes place soon after World War II. Inspector Bordelli is a delightful character making his way through post war Florence and giving new insights into the pulse of that fascinating town. We have glimpses of a Florence most of us never had a chance to visit at that point in history. His friends are varied and his sleuthing methods are all of his own creation. You cannot go wrong with purchasing books in this series. He is a really good man, with a real hunger for the good Italian food at his favorite restaurant.I have make 20 trips to Italy and most of them have included time in Florence. It is wonderful to have a new Florence revealed to me in this delightful series.Unfortunately, not many of them are available, few of them on Kindle, which I read from all the time.

A story which weaves the past and present together in the character of Inspector Bordelli, veteran of the Fascist struggles in Italy. This is a tale of intense wickedness and amazing humanity. The murder of a young boy and the community pulling together after a massive flood in Florence. Slow starting and fast finishing, and enhanced with the details of living.

About the Author
For more than 30 years, Rod Dinkins worked in the aerospace industry as an electronics technical writer. Rod Dinkins started in radio in the late 1940s with his Knight Kit Ocean Hopper receiver, listening in to the ham bands. He served as an Aviation Electronics Technician from 1951-1955. Re-entering civilian life, he spent four years as an electronics instructor, followed by two years as a vocational electronics teacher at a junior college. He received his Amateur Radio license in 1977. He is a member of the San Diego DX Club (SDDXC) and the Palomar Amateur Radio Club (PARC), and was the former newsletter editor of the Northern California DX Club (NCDXC).

Great for the beginer and a few Golden Nuggets for the rest.

I have mixed feelings about this book, it is well written, it has loads of useful advice but most of the advice is the kind of info that a new ham will pick up on his own in his first year of working DX.
I have worked many many countries from Asia, Africa, VK's, ZL's Europeans, NA, SA and both Poles, so when I looked at the huge list of Dx Advice I found so many of items to be things I learned during my first year of listening to the Top Guns and things I learned on my own as a newbie trying out things by either succeeding or failing. So you can imagine that at many points, this book bought a smile to my face as I thought to myself, been there done that or oh yeah that one was a trap I fell into, in that way this book was more than worth the price of admission.

What I am torn between is my gut feeling that a good Ham listens and learns DXing from the experts on the air and the thought of quickly learning stuff from this book! It makes me think of the old adage that "The Journey is more important than arriving" I must admit there are more than just a few new things I picked up in this book that I found to be slick and there were a few things that I did not realize was bad juju in the Ham world, so in that regard the DX101 is a good book to have, but just don't treat Ham radio like learning a new computer language, it's an interactive verbal dance between people and if your new to Ham Radio you will not appreciate how big that statement is, but keep in mind your not just Talking to your own countrymen but people of different cultures that often times see things that you might think as normal as down right distasteful, luckily most Hams are gentlemen so they will just let it pass; but just don't expect them to line up to talk to you in the future.

Doing good Dxing requires a skill set that cannot just be read in a book, but this book will help you to go down a proper path and and offers tons of guidance on what to avoid and what might help, but don't think that after reading this you will just be reaping a huge amount of contacts because during the Journey you will need to learn a lot more about propagation from raw experience than just reading, you will learn more about equipment from using an assortment and mainly you will learn to listen listen and listen more. I have found Ham Radio to be a great personal tool in my everyday life, in this day of so much computer generated chatter many people have forgotten the simple verbal skills that are needed to interact with people, Ham Radio keeps that skill sharp! Also I have developed the ability to hear dialog when other people go "Huh what did he say". As time passes almost all ham operators become skilled at hearing things other people cant make out.

If your a new Ham go out and buy this book without hesitation, it will save you many hours of frustration and it will make you sound more professional to other Hams. If your an old Ham op this book may provide you with a few insights that you never knew.

dangling phrases -- perhaps like casual conversation

The author's style is a little strange -- incomplete sentences, dangling phrases -- perhaps like casual conversation. However, I've never seen so much information about DX in one place. Although I've been a ham for 50 years, I learned some things that I had never heard of before.

There is some redundancy, with repeated material in some chapters. However, the author did this since many of the techniques and tips cross over chapter lines and frequency bands, and this makes the book a good go-to reference when you need all the details fast. The author also maintains an excellent web site with updated information and links to other useful DX resources.

Despite the unusual writing style, I would still give this book a 5 star rating just because there is so much information and it will be a great help to anyone wanting to master the art of working DX.
