About the Author
Thomas K. Holcomb is Professor of Deaf Studies at Ohlone College in Fremont, California, where he teaches both Deaf and hearing students in courses on Deaf culture, Deaf education, and A.S.L./English Interpretation. Holcomb's family -- his parents, grandparents, children, and grandson -- are all Deaf. With over 30 years of teaching experience, as well as several publications, training packages, and D.V.D.s to his name, Holcomb is considered a leading authority on Deaf culture. He has presented in 45 states and several different countries, including Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Japan, and Sweden. His academic credentials include a bachelor's degree from Gallaudet University, a master's degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester.

Hooray for Introduction to American Deaf Culture!

I am writing this review as a second year Communication Sciences and Disorders major with an emphasis in education and Deaf studies. I am currently enrolled in a class entitled Orientation to Deafness and this book, Introduction to American Deaf Culture written by Thomas K. Holcomb, is the primary text used for the class. It has been a refreshing addition to the many monotonous textbooks I have been collecting as it's 15 chapters are thoughtfully written and give an honest depiction of Deaf culture along with it's stereotypes, language, art, and literature to name a few.

As a professor of Deaf culture classes for 30 years, Holcomb includes anecdotes from his personal life and experiences as a Deaf individual as well as the experiences of his students, children, and colleagues, providing an understandable and comprehensive guide to American Deaf Culture. This book is a great choice as a textbook to provide the basic knowledge you need to begin learning about Deaf culture. He uses pictures, charts, and graphs throughout the book in order to provide better understanding and my personal favorite aspect is the how he uses a poem written by a Deaf person to conclude each chapter. They are thought provoking and give the reader an opportunity to connect with the content in an alternative and interesting way.

I use Introduction to American Deaf Culture weekly in order to answer a number of discussion questions. This book not only makes it much less painful to complete the assignments but it makes me truly want to learn more about Deaf culture and its community. I write this as a person who not only actually enjoys a required text but as a person who would recommend this book to anyone who might be taking, or considering taking, an ASL course. I would be willing to say it should be required for students in ASL courses to have an understanding of the community whose languge you are learning to use. I personally am taking Beginning ASL I, using the textbook Master ASL! by Jason Zinza, and Introduction to American Deaf Culture has helped me tremendously simply by providing background knowledge on the signs and language I am learning. Required or not it is an interesting read for anyone interested in Deaf culture, it is truly fascinating and all too often overlooked. I have already learned so much!

Overall, I give this book 5 stars based on its interesting qualities and readability. I recommend it, as well as Deaf studies in general, to everyone!

Fascinating, detailed, and written in an easy format. You can skip around in this book without feeling lost in the information, he always cites his own chapters when he brings up something from a previous or future chapter so you can look it up. a must-read supplement for topology students

Milnor's "Topology from the Differentiable Viewpoint" is a brief sketch of differential topology, well written, as are all books by Milnor, with clear, concise explanations. For students who wish to learn the subject, it should be read as a companion to a more substantive text, such as Guillemin & Pollack's Differential Topology or Hirsch's Differential Topology, as too much of the material is left out for this to be adequate as a textbook. OTOH, it does make for good bedtime reading.

While this book is highly regarded among mathematicians, it is not without its faults, namely,
- it fails to cover many topics of importance, such as transversality (only mentioned in an exercise), embeddings, differential forms, integration, Morse theory, and the intersection form;
- it only cites some theorems without proving them, or it leaves the proofs to the reader;
- it offers proofs of many theorems that are really only sketches without all the details;
- manifolds are only defined as subsets of Euclidean spaces;
- there is only 1 collection of 17 problems at the end of the book, which are used to introduce important concepts; and
- it probably moves too quickly for true beginners, packing a lot into only 51 pages.

So don't buy this as your only, or even first, book on differential topology. Oddly, many of the faults that I listed above are simultaneously strengths, in that it can be read very quickly, with relatively little effort and a high rate of retention. Milnor really emphasizes the topology of the subject, giving applications such as the fundamental theorem of algebra, Brouwer's fixed point theorem, the hairy ball theorem, the Poincare-Hopf theorem, and Hopf's theorem. Most of the book focuses on degree theory, but there is also a nice introduction to framed cobordism, which is rare for an elementary book. Guillemin & Pollack's book was based in large part on this one, and could be read together, with G&P giving more elementary explanations and additional topics, while Milnor's book provides a proof of the Sard theorem and the Pontrjagin-Thom construction. The exercises, though not particularly difficult, do provide a good opportunity to practice proving theorems in the subject, as there are no hints for them, as one would find in many other differential topology books, and they are not separated by chapter.

A good place to start

This book is exceptionally well written and contains almost no errors. In this book, Milnor makes the decision to only treat the ideal cases. He does not delve into technical refinements. As a result, Milnor is able to prove a major theorem on almost every page. This also makes the book an ideal introduction for someone who is encountering differential topology for the first time since the reader is able to digest the key ideas in differential topology without having to go through extra technical baggage, which is required to extend the methods to more general cases. Despite the fact it is less than 80 pages, the book covers a significant amount of material, which allows the reader to learn a considerable amount per unit time.

Excellent starting point for differential topology

One of the best points of this little book is its brevity and clear exposition of the basic ideas. It makes a great reference guide because it's so short and well-organized. Written by a distinguished mathematician, it's no wonder that other graduate-level texts such as Guillemin & Pollacks "Differential Topology" highly recommend reading it alongside their book. Milnor's booklet is a classic, whose style and ideas surely pervade other texts.

Providing clarity about how to think about consciousness and attention

Most of us give little thought to the differences between what we mean when we say "consciousness," "attention," and "conscious attention," yet there is a great deal we can learn about these topics when we stop and take a closer look. This book invites us to consider whether it possible to pay attention to something we're not conscious of--and whether we could be conscious of something we're not paying attention to.

This book is fascinating since it contains a fairly comprehensive and up-to-date summary of research in the fields of consciousness and attention, so readers can quickly come up to speed with regard to the most current findings from scientific studies in cognitive science. After exploring a range of possible theories, the authors conclude that it is indeed possible to be conscious of something without paying it attention, and vice versa.

At this time when cognitive scientists seek to better comprehend the relationship between consciousness and attention, this book provides an excellent foundation for future discussion. Thanks to providing insights from a philosophical perspective, some of the previously blurry areas where assumptions have been made differently by experts in different fields can be clarified. wMontemayor and Haladjian address this interdisciplinary topic by first providing an overview of the history of various theories and views of consciousness, and then presenting an original account to describe how attention does sometimes occur consciously.

When discussing consciousness and attention, I recommend including consideration of one's viewpoint position on a spectrum of degrees of dissociation between consciousness and attention. Such a spectrum is graphically described in such a way that visually presents a memorable image starting with a circle on the left side of the diagram representing consciousness and attention being one and the same, with four other sets of circles moving toward the right, with the right-most circle of "all forms of consciousness" being completely separate from the circle representing "all forms of attention." Montemayor and Haladjian argue in favor of dissociation between consciousness and attention, providing three theoretical reasons in favor of such a separation--and their term "conscious attention" is an excellent addition to any conversation about consciousness.

How we recognize and communicate the historical evolution toward generally increasing dissociation between "all forms of consciousness" and "all forms of attention" is significant in any discussions about consciousness, and this book is therefore highly recommended reading for all serious students in the field of consciousness studies.

About the Author

An Outstanding Example of Adventure and Character

Yonie (short for Jonathan) is a seven-year-old Pennsylvania Dutch boy whose curiousity and distractability earns him the name "Yonie Wondernose." One day his parents leave him with his sister and grandmother to care for the farm overnight, and Yonie strives to prove that he is worthy of the responsibility entrusted to him. That night a fire breaks out in the barn, and he and his grandmother must rescue the animals (the family's livelihood) from the flames. Throughout the adventure, Yonie strives to earn the reward his father has promised him"when he is old enough to be trusted like a man."

This story deservedly won a Caldecott Honor in 1945 for its excellent writing and fine storyline. de Angeli does a fine job capturing the exuberant immaturity of this likable child, drawing an appealing picture of a young person striving to overcome childish impulses and earn respect. It is especially wonderful that the prized reward has to do with his desire to attain to manhood: rather than seeking to gratify his immature desires, Yonie aspires to the respect and honor that is only given to the mature. His father's quiet pride and understated affirmation, following his near-heroic efforts to rescue the animals, are a prize worth gaining.

De Angeli captures a little of the flavor of Pennsylvania Dutch language along with many details of everyday life. Her characters are appealing, the family is warmly loving, and the story itself is full of excitement and danger. It will appeal to both boys and girls, but especially boys. It contains more prose than most picture books and is a perfect fit for children who are just transitioning into chapter books.

Yonie Wondernose is a charming book that, along with Marguerite De Angeli's other classics, deserves to be in every elementary school and public library. Award-winning De Angeli is both illustrator and author and her artwork introduced me to the world of the Amish, Mennonites and Quakers.

"Yonie" lets us peek into the world of a working farm where every family member, even seven year old Yonie, has responsibilities. But his "wondernose" often leads him to satisfy his curiosity before chores. One special night Yonnie faces new duties. Will his wondernose get the better of him, or will he earn new respect from Papa?

Published in 1944, Yonie Wondernose remains today a wonderful story about a young Amish boy living with his family on their farm, who acquires his name because of his never ending curiosity. Whatever task he pursues he's endlessly drawn to explore diversions and loses track of what he set out to do, until one fateful night when he saves the farm from fire. With humor and affection, Marguerite de Angeli depicts in her story and her illustrations, a family and a bright little boy, while describing at the same time, all that is best in an Amish community in Pennsylvania.

Wonderful explanations

Wonderful explanations of the Buddha's lists. The author explained it extremely well. I love the use of plain english and putting the explanations in language anyone can understand. The author is a scholar and highly educated, but unlike other scholars who write books, this author wrote in plain language, easily understandable and digestable. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking the Buddha's wisdom or anyone who just wants a better understanding of the Buddha's teachings.

Dr. Snyder may know a lot about Buddhism, ...

Dr. Snyder may know a lot about Buddhism, but he is no 'enlightened' soul. In the first few pages, I learned that he has given hundreds of lectures, published several books, and owns a 200-unit apartment building, which tells me that he may be a successful capitalist, but that's hardly the sort of stuff that makes me want him for my guru. I threw his book in the trash.

About the Author

Dr. William Stallings has authored 17 titles, and counting revised editions, over 40 books on computer security, computer networking, and computer architecture. His writings have appeared in numerous publications, including the Proceedings of the IEEE, ACM Computing Reviews and Cryptologia.

He has 11 times received the award for the best Computer Science textbook of the year from the Text and Academic Authors Association.

In over 30 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. He has designed and implemented both TCP/IP-based and OSI-based protocol suites on a variety of computers and operating systems, ranging from microcomputers to mainframes. As a consultant, he has advised government agencies, computer and software vendors, and major users on the design, selection, and use of networking software and products.

He created and maintains the Computer Science Student Resource Site at ComputerScienceStudent.com. This site provides documents and links on a variety of subjects of general interest to computer science students (and professionals). Dated material with no clear direction

This book seems to have an identity crisis - on one hand it goes into great detail on the MIME format of email (unrelated to security), while on the other it dedicated very little space to several critically important security concepts (e.g. HTTPS certificate usage in web browsers and modern cert practices). Much of the book is outdated, which also detracts heavily. The book does, however, provide a plethora of additional resources to turn to in order to fill in the many missing gaps. I felt I purchased a list of abbreviations and external resources instead of a complete book. I've worked in this field for decades, and don't find this book ideal for either beginners or experts. With the format of the questions at the end of each chapter, I believe this book is only intended to be used in a college setting as part of a course where additional material is available.

A decent reference

I had to get this book for my network security class. Overall, I found it a good reference but only about average as far as textbooks go. Being a very short book, it's an excellent reference when you have an existing basic understanding of the technology, but I wouldn't advise using this book as an introduction by itself. In my case, it was helpful for review, but not nearly as useful for first learning the material.
