About the Author
Robert Gagnon is the founder and principal engineer of Gagnon Engineering, a fire protection consulting firm, and a periodic lecturer at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College. An active member and elected Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, he is also involved with NFPA, where he chairs and serves on numerous committees. Mr. Gagnon is a Professional Engineer registered in states across the Eastern Seaboard, and holds Level IV Senior Engineering Technician certifications in both Automatic Sprinkler Design and Special Hazards Design. He earned his BA in Mathematics from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), and his BS and MS in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland.

Just Started But very informative so far

This book may be a tad bit outdated, but the contents still applies. This book is geared toward a small group of people, though maybe larger than I think. I've not read near 1/4 of the book, but I can tell that this book is for those that are interested in learning as much about Water-based Fire Protection, and the design of such systems. I am a Fire Protection design technician of N.I.C.E.T. Level 1 trying to move on to Level II and eventually III or IV. Since this is not a trade that is taught in many schools, so it's on the job training, and occasionally any other training available, I frequently take online courses as well as webinars that pertain to this trade. So recently in a magazine FPC- A fire protection Contractor magazine, that listed multiple books that might be helpful all around, this was one of the books. This book cover's a wide array of topics, from NICET required learning, to special hazard's protection systems. Water-Spray Systems, Deluge Systems, and Mist Systems on down covering much of the Fire Protection Handbook, but more for the designer. I would definitely recommend this book to any one in the Fire Protection Industry, especially those that are designer's of water-based systems, be it fresh/new designers to seasoned veteran's. This book is great.

Best basic fire sprinkler book I've come accross.

In my opinion, after more than thirty years in the fire sprinkler business, "Design of Water-Based Protection Systems," is by far the best introductory level text into the water-based systems world of fire protection. I personally used the text in the training environment for several years.

The book is well written, concise and well received by students. I would highly recommend this text for anyone contemplating setting up a training situation in the industry.

This is one of the best books I've red about loosing weight

This is one of the best books I've red about loosing weight. The irony is that this book wasn't meant to give advise on weight loss but rather to slow down the aging process. People who follow this lifestyle find them self to loose weight as well as people with diabetes find that they gradually can use less insulin.
I am not finish with the book and by following the guidelines I find that I don't get sugar cravings and don't want to eat in between meals anymore.

Healthy eating habits made easy!

This book does give a comprehensive overview of the relationship between our health and the food we eat, without getting too much into technical details.
It outlines perfectly which sources of nutrition are good and which are the ones better to avoid. The author does not pretend to invent a diet himself; he formulates it as "building on the shoulders of the giants in medicine", although he is a respected medical professor himself. He brings together a lot of scattered information and visualizes it in a very clear "hourglass" model.
Contrary to the one negative comment, I find the scientific argumentation convincing and I have checked some of the literature where I had questions (he writes for a non-scientific audience!)

Great book about nutrition that allows your body to lose weight automatically

I was impressed by this book because of its clarity about metabolism (without too much chemistry) and the role that nutrition plays in preventing disease, e.g., diabetes and heart disease, and therefore living longer. The author is a doctor who has had practical experience with patients, which lends credence to his writing.

A very beneficial added benefit in following the author's advice is automatic weight loss. I have been following his directions for about two weeks and have already noticed some weight loss around my waist.

And his directions are easy to follow. The hourglass shows what to give up at the top and what to replace it with at the bottom. Reducing carbohydrates and sugar is the key and his book shows how to do it easily.

There are a few typos but don't let that put you off. This is an excellent book.

Although born in Waukegan, Illinois (same as literary icon Ray Bradbury), Sam A. Patel grew up in New Jersey. An avid collector of comic books and roll-playing games, he first joined the internet at the age of 14 when he ran a BBS on his Commodore 64 with a 300 baud modem. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Miami, and a Master of Arts in Philosophy from New York University. In the time since, he has stress-tested data centers for the national election, taught English in Japan, managed email servers in Portland, Oregon, and built exhibition booths in Melbourne, Australia. Data Runner is his first series.

My Review (Adult) - 4 Stars:

I admit I'm probably not the target audience for this book. I got it because I thought my teenage son would like it and I wanted to read something alongside him. I admit in the beginning, there was so much new information - new cities and corporations, lots of techy and Parkour jargon to take in - that I was worried it would either overwhelm me or bore me. I started highlighting passages hoping I'd remember everything. But once I decided to just get the gist and not get bogged down by all the technical details, I really started to appreciate this book. And my advice is to not get overwhelmed in the beginning. As time goes on, if you're like me, you'll pick up more and more on Jack's world. But it is still a lot of information to take in.

This is definitely a plot-driven, action adventure. There is a steady increase in action and pacing until you suddenly get to the point where you don't want to put it down because there seems to always be something coming around the corner. I must compliment Patel on his ability to integrate providing the reader with new information in the midst of potentially dire situations. He was able to find a good balance between the two, furthering the action but keeping the reader up to speed on the big picture and overall plot. Plus this futuristic world he created was really fascinating and not unreasonable, making the whole story more realistic. And I'll say that whatever situation Jack found himself in, I really looked forward to how Patel was going to get him out of it. It felt like Jack was running until the very end, and I felt like I was right there alongside him.

There is also a great mix of characters. I normally love great character development in a book, and while I enjoyed the characters here, I would not say this book is necessarily great at developing the depths of its characters. Jack was a great narrator, observing things like an overly bright, far advanced for his years, 17-year-old at times, and at other times just like a normal kid his own age. His passion for Parkour was clear, and I really loved how Patel brings that love to the reader, making us respect the Parkour philosophy as well. The other characters brought their own life to the story, and we get a bit of background on each of them to make them interesting and see their importance to the story and to Jack, but I would still have liked to know more about them.

Bottomline: This is a great plot-driven, action-packed adventure; light on character development. It's a bit "techy" at times, and the reader will be tempted into confusion, but even if you don't understand every single detail, the overall picture is very intriguing. The actual "data running" and Parkour elements are exciting and a welcome integration into this genre. This is the first book of a series, but we are not left with a huge cliffhanger, more of an idea of what might be happening with Jack in the next book, which I look forward to reading.

My Son's Review (13 y/o) - 3.5 Stars:

My first impression when I started Data Runner was that I wasn't going to be into it. In the beginning it was hard to understand what Jack was doing because the technical words were confusing until I got more into the book. After I figured out what Jack did with his life and where he lived, I got more into the story. I really liked the Parkour parts of the story and those were not confusing. I liked that he did Parkour as part of his data running. I really liked when he jumped on a moving train. I also liked the Brentwood Dragons - how and where they trained, their sayings, and their friendships. I also found the plot interesting and how it was laid out. Once I was towards the middle of the book, it was hard for me to stop reading. There was a lot of action and a lot of stuff happening and it made me want to keep reading. I felt the characters were very plain and not a lot was revealed about them. The ending was very surprising. I didn't expect things to happen the way they did. But it was still very exciting to read and makes me want to read the next book. I didn't like all the bad words.

fun and exciting

A Data Runner (electron from Diversion Books) according to Sam A. Patel, is like a bike messenger except he carries electronic info in his arm. The New York suburb of Brentwood is in poor shape because its water supply has been contaminated with flammable liquids. Jack Nill should have been working on advanced courses on his way to college, but his father lost his job and Jack is going to the local highschool and learning parkour (the Jackie Chan stuff) on the side. Then his father goes deeply into debt at the same time Arcadian Transports makes Jack an offer. Unfortunately there is data out there so damaging that someone is cutting off data runner arms.A leak of corruption of one of the major corporations that control the U. S. is out and that corporation has a truly evil plan that will hurt Brentwood and other towns around the country. Very exciting and pulse pounding. Review published in the Philadelphia Weekly Press

A fun, fast paced blend of parkour action heroes versus dystopian mega corps.

Data Runner is Johnny Mnemonic plus Speed; a world where data is physically downloaded into a person, and then that person delivers it at breakneck speeds without ever stopping. It is like a Tom Cruise chase scene from beginning to end; arms and legs pump at a furious rate, it's full of intensity, and you have a smile on your face the whole time. It's a Parkour exhibition, with a dash of cyberpunk mega corporations as its playground. And a fun, enjoyable romp through that playground it is.

It's a fast read, both because it seems short and because it's a real page turner - the pace never really lets up. I enjoyed it in the same way I enjoy a fun, well crafted action movie. It even starts with one of those drop-you-in-the-middle-of-the-action then "72 hours earlier" style gimmicks, but it works quite well as a hook. There are fun twists and turns, the semi-dystopian world is interesting, and you always want to keep going to see what's around the next corner. Honestly, I found it hard to put down. Even the romance is more subtle rather than the typical overplayed triangle, which I found refreshing.

Now, to be transparent, this is lighter fare. You're not going to find anything too deep or gut wrenching here, although I did find the philosophy of parkour thought provoking, and I enjoyed some of the common refrains, even if they were repeated (a bit too?) often. At times, it seemed a bit light on details, especially with the world building which was explained explicitly a bit too much rather than just being shown. But at the same time, it has a high level of polish and never bogs down, and this is YA so I can forgive that.

If I had one key piece of critique, it would be that the there is not much depth to the characters, nor is there much development. They are cool, they are stylized, and they are enjoyable to read about, but they don't go through much change. Toward the end, the main character mentions how he's not the same person as when the story started, and I thought to myself, "Oh? How is he different, really?" So if there's one thing I'd like to see more of, it's deeper character exploration and development. There was certainly time for a bit more of that. And as the author says, "There are no limits, only plateaus!" (Love it.)

To that point, I absolutely WOULD like to see more! Count me in for the sequels. If you're looking for a fast, fun, light read with a sleek geeky tech twist, give this one a shot. You'll most likely enjoy it!

Review on "Storytelling"

I purchased this book to help me cope with a relative who is dealing with emotional issues and is having difficulty in school. I use to work in the mental health field but have been out of the profession for many years. This book was a delight to read and through storytelling and the other activities it offers I am able to offer my family member some concrete advice on how to deal with a very difficult and sensitive issue. I would highly recommend this book to health care professionals and to any person who may be experiencing challenges in their lives. Excellent and interesting book! Karen

For anyone dealing with children, this book is very informative and wonderfully written. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is seeking guidance or help in this area. It is very detailed, and in my opinion, far exceeds other books of its kind out there!

The SCRUM Field Guide by Mitch Lacey is a Must Read whether you are new to SCRUM or deeply experienced with SCRUM this guide offers invaluable insights. Whether you read this book from cover to cover or use it as a reference guide the practical advice and the numerous tips and tricks of the trade outlined throughout this book are essential tools in a SCRUM professional’s tool kit.

No longer do I lack the confidence about reaching the sprint objective. The practical approach outlined throughout this guide has enabled me to confidently address SCRUM framework preparatory issues and SCRUM framework implementation issues. The stand alone chapters have assisted me in fine tuning my skills enhancing my techniques in estimating project costs, running sprint review and sprint retrospective meetings, incorporating offshore teams, decomposing stories, and defining when “done” is “done”, allowing me to successfully sustain the pace of the SCRUM model at any organization I work for delivering working software as promised.

A Must-Have Guide

This book is just terrific. It's precisely what it promises to be: a field guide for those already familiar with Scrum and in the midst of a Scrum adoption. Each chapter stands alone and can be read in any order, so it's a breeze to simply locate the problem you're having in the table of contents, and then read the chapter or chapters that address that issue. Each starts with a story pulled from Lacey's real-world experiences, then discusses how the problem was resolved and additional approaches for addressing the problem.

But you probably won't stop there, because the stories are just so interesting. I found myself planning to read just a couple of chapters, and ended up a few hours later with half the book read. The chapters are just so well-written, each starting with a compelling story that had me going "oh yeah, I've been there" and wanting to see more. And even after being agile for over ten years, there were several new techniques I learned thanks to this field guide, and I'm much improved in my understanding of paired programming and test-driven development (yes, there is just as much emphasis on the technical aspect of software development as there is the process aspect!).

I strongly recommend this as a companion guide to whatever basic Scrum book you buy. While there are many fine books available that explain what Scrum is, Lacey's book is the one that will help you outside of the classroom, in the field, with those day-to-day Scrum implementation problems.

Practical advice for your first year... and beyond!

I've been working with SCRUM for a few years now, and have seen some good successes in my projects along with my share of scars.

I found that once you take and pass the CSM course, you have an understanding of the theory, but putting that theory into practice under real world conditions is the real trick.

In reading this book, I've lost count of the number of times where I've had the "Oh man, we totally ran into that very same problem!" moment... followed by ", I wish I read this earlier!"

What sets this book apart is that it gives you the practical information that you don't really get through the CSM course, but rather through (in this case, Mitch's) hard earned experience. Every chapter had something that I could directly relate to, and usually more than one nugget of wisdom that I thought about introducing in a future iteration or project.

Some highlights (among many!)-
1) determining an iteration length. The shorter the iteration, the more opportunity for feedback and course correction.
2) Off-shoring. If you must, then here's what you can do to maximize the chances for success... but be prepared for a tough road ahead!
3) Mixing SCRUM roles. I've done it, but here's why you shouldn't!
4) Engineering best practices- hard to be successful with SCRUM if you don't have the technical practices in order.
5) Story and Task decomposition- some useful techniques and guidelines.
6) How to deal with maintenance work that interrupts your sprint
7) Dealing with technical debt, why is it important?

I found that the book itself was very easy to read. I think the anecdote at the beginning of each chapter is an effective way to get the reader to relate to the topic. You could read the book from start to end, or as I did, jump from chapter to chapter, picking out the topics that are most relevant to your situation.

For those new to SCRUM, having this book is really like having access to an experienced SCRUM trainer/coach to help guide you through the inevitable pitfalls. For those who are experienced with SCRUM, this book has a lot of advanced topics as well as serving as a great reference to the SCRUM fundamentals.
