A Very Readable Account Of The "Fitzgerald" Tragedy

I have read most of the books published about the "Edmund Fitzgerald" and her tragic demise. Of that number, several are more informative and up to date, but in "Gales of November" Robert J. Hemming takes another approach to the sinking: he focuses on the crew. The book is nicely refined and ultimately readable prose that is more captivating than most books. The down side, which Hemming acknowledges at the outset, is that since the ship sank so quickly and without survivors, the onboard activities and conversations after the "Fitzgerald" left Superior, Wisconsin are informed speculation. I normally dislike conjecture in nonfiction accounts, but as with "The Perfect Storm" and other examples where nobody survived the accident, it is nearly impossible to avoid if the focus is on the human experience involved. The book as a whole is taut and well-paced, with the ambiance of an exciting novel (albeit one where the final outcome is already known.) Of all the books on the "Fitzgerald," this book contains by far the most detailed and finely written character studies of the 29 men who sailed on her, and was particularly strong in providing information on Captain Ernest McSorley, and his close friend First Mate John McCarthy.

Hemming clearly has an opinion on why and how the ship foundered, and presents that as the single narrative plot of the book. He is a strong proponent of the shoaling school of thought (which I admit does make a great deal of sense to me, too.) The book is a real pleasure to read until the concluding chapters when Hemming bristles at the conclusions of the Coast Guard and the NTSB investigations, making the final portion of the book more tedious. The book contains some errors. On p. 212 Hemming says the ship's bell was not found in examinations of the wreck: not only was it found, it was later raised for museum display and replaced with a duplicate with the 29 crewmen's names engraved on it. In fairness this was written before all the later expeditions were made to the ship. There are other small errors as well. For instance, on p. 234 Hemming refers to the then-new navigation system LORAN-C, which he calls "Lorain C." That's admittedly fairly trivial, but should have been caught by having a professional mariner proofread the manuscript.

Despite the occasional misstep, I still truly enjoyed reading "Gales of November." If you can accept the speculative nature of the narrative in chapters ten, eleven, and twelve, the book is a captivating account of the human side of the tragedy of the "Edmund Fitzgerald."

"wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" after reading this book, In Paradise Michigan at the Real Estate Office it puts you right on the Lady.
and in the minds of the men who lost their lives on that fateful night. We were at Reed City Mich that night, milking cows. the wind howled so bad the cattle were moaning.

Excellent read!!

This book was very informative and told a good story.You get to know the personal stories and biographies of the doomed crew.At times I didn't want to put the book away for the night! There are questions that simply can't be answered but this book I believe gives an honest and comprehensive look at what became of the Big Fitz..I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in great lakes freighter and the history of the great lakes

Depends on what you are looking for...

This is an excellent historical biography on Leonardo da Vinci. The book is solid facts one after another, mostly taken from surviving documents such as financial transactions and Leonardo's notebooks. The downside is that if you are reading this book for the sake of reading a good book, it can be a tad boring. The writing style is not fluid, perhaps a little choppy at times, since it is so fact-oriented. If you want to know the cold hard facts about Leonardo, this is the book for you (like for a research project). If you are looking for a good read that is a little more subjective you might not like it as much.

The Story of an Exceptional Renaissance Man!!!

This book by Oxford University Professor of Historical Art Martin Kemp gives the reader the opportunity to "grasp the essential nature of Leonardo da Vinci, both as himself and as a historical phenomenon." Kemp, who has investigated Leonardo for over thirty years, does this through historical documents and through studying mainly Leonardo's drawings and paintings.

A highlight of this book is the inclusion of letters not only written by Leonardo but those written about him or his works. For example, consider this letter from another artist written during the last years of Leonardo's life:

"[The King], being enamoured to such an extraordinary degree of Leonardo's great talents, took such pleasure in hearing him talk that he would only on a few days deprive himself of his company...I cannot resist repeating the words I heard the King say about him...he said that a man had never been born who knew as much as Leonardo, not only in the spheres of painting, sculpture, and architecture, but in that he was a very great philosopher."

This book contains almost twenty-five reproductions of Leonardo's drawings peppered throughout. My personal favorites are Leonardo's engineering drawings and anatomical drawings. There are also twenty mainly color plates (in two sets of ten plates). These consist mainly of reproductions of Leonardo's paintings. My personal favorites are the "Mona Lisa" and the "Last Supper." There is also a "Gallery" of his paintings at the end of the book. This gallery consists of nearly twenty-five reproductions.

The very last section of the book has "Leonardo's Life in Outline." It traces his life from when he was born in 1452 until he died in 1519. This is especially good because it gives the reader, in brief form, an overall view of Leonardo's life.

This book's greatest service is that it separates fact from fiction. Kemp explains: "For the writer of fiction, the license [regarding Leonardo's life] is almost unlimited. Dan Brown's phenomenally successful `The Da Vinci Code' [is an example which presents fictional facts]. In the service of fiction, such unfounded `facts' are fine; as history they perpetrate nonsense. The problem with Brown's "Code" is not the invention of `truth;' but that it has been taken seriously by those who cannot recognize fiction as fiction."

Finally, the only minor problem I had is that the table of contents lists what drawings are found in this book but it does not specify what page these drawings are found on. I found this frustrating if I had to refer to a specific drawing.

In conclusion, this book explores Leonardo da Vinci's life and works. Be sure to read it to discover why, 500 years after his death, Leonardo still grips and inspires us!!

Doesn't satisfy as biography or academic work but an easy read

Based on other reviews and the author's status as an Oxford professor of art history who has spent years studying Leonardo, I was looking forward to this book. What I found instead was an easy read that is neither fish nor foul. The author waxes sentimental over his stay in "Mona Lisa's room" and takes jibes at Dan Brown fans. His chapters on Leonardo's science describe Leonardo's ideas in detail, with great reverence for Leonardo's intellect, but it would be more interesting to hear Leonardo's ideas assessed according to modern perspective: do today's geologists agree about the previous existence of lakes? Were his math solutions or water treatises worth anything as science? Kemp's book is neither a full, warm biographical portrait, nor an academic assessment of Leonardo's contributions to art and science, but it is short and double-spaced. Beware frequent typos and homonym errors such as "raised to the ground."

Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Cookbook

I was so excited to find, this cookbook! My son and his wife just Love these hot dogs so I am sure they will get much enjoyment from this cookbook! The cookbook is used but it is in perfect condition! I would keep it for my own use if my Family weren't grown-up. It is not a large cookbook however it contains some wonderful recipes! It was costly but I'm sure Glad I found it! Recommend

A little longer and more complex than most texts for the series, this one starts with a common childhood experience, pushing toy cars across the floor--and gradually--introduces ideas such as forces, reactions, inertia, friction, and gravity. That's a lot to explain in a short book, and some of these concepts are difficult to simplify. To her credit, Bradley, the author of Energy Makes Things Happen (2003), does grapple with fundamental concepts rather than taking the easier, more traveled, less-satisfactory road of, say, talking about gravity in terms of "up" and "down" or simply describing its observable effects. Colorful line-and-watercolor-wash illustrations brighten the pages. The final spread offers instructions for a simple activity leading to a better understanding of friction. Paul Meisel has illustrated many books for children, including Why Are the Ice Caps Melting?, Energy Makes Things Happen, and What Happens to Our Trash? in the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. He lives in Newtown, Connecticut.

amazing little book

I found this book to be extremely informative while explaining how forces make things move in a way my 3 year old granddaughter understands while learning myself!!

The pictures are awsome, and keeps any age children's attention. All of the books in the Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science series have been a valuable tool in teaching and entertaining in my home.

Wonderful science book for kids

I really like the "Let's Read and Find out Science 2" series. These are great science books for elementary school and they are perfect for my first grader. They use familiar examples to introduce basic scientific concepts in a simple but fun way. They are interesting for both kids and adults. I have found them to be a valuable tool to teach these concepts to my kids.

This book about force and movement was fun for the kids.
