Adding a figure to a kit or display can increase both depth and interest, yet building and painting figures continues to be a source of frustration to many armour modelers. This book provides full details on how to build and integrate realistic Heer Panzer crew figures with their vehicles, and on how to paint the key uniform variants and patterns worn by these distinctive troops.
It begins with a brief discussion of the various mediums (plastic, resin and white metal), and a round up of the tools, materials and aftermarket items suitable for building and super-detailing figures. Using differing theatres and periods of the war, it shows how to paint common clothing types and patterns, such as the black panzer uniform, Splittermuster, feldgrau, and fatigues, as well as unique and fascinating variants such as Russian camouflage fabric and the motorcycle rubber coat.
Special effects, such as dust-covering, and the addition of equipment and and other details are also covered in clear, step-by-step tutorials. The book will also challenge and inspire the more experienced crew figure modeler, with clearly explained 'kit-bashing' and scratch-building demonstrations, making this a treatment of the subject with wide appeal.

Review
“For the modeller who has attempted figures and is not happy with them, then this title could be for you. It will help you bring your figures up to scratch... [If] you really need to get to grips with your figures, you will need to dip a toe into the 'further reading' section! Recommended.” ―Vinnie Branigan, Armorama (August 2006)

Disappointed
By Vincent M. Stokes
Although weell photographed and documented, I was let down by this volume in the Osprey Modelling series. Maybe if the publisher had named it "Painting Panzer Crewmen of the Heer" I wouldn't be as disappointed. To it's credit, the book does go into very good detail concerning painting Panzer crewmen, but I think that the concept of modeling goes a bit farther than just painting. Very little of this book deals with topics like figure conversions, changing facial expressions, and scratchbuilding figures. A good reference, but I think that Osprey could have done a bit better.

Good beginner figure painting book
By Thomas Paine
If you like modeling 1/35th or 1/48th scale German armor and have wanted to add figures, this book is for you. The core of the text covers painting WWII panzer crewmen in miniature using enamels and oils and only lightly touches on conversions and scupting.
The basic uniforms covered include:
Panzer Black (The most common uniform worn)
Afrika Korp (also known as Tropical uniform)
Reed Green Denim (introduced in 1942)
The focus of the work is the use of shading and hilighting techniques with enamel paints to create a realistic looking uniform in miniature. The author begins with the Panzer Black uniform which is very easy and a great place to start for a beginner. The author then moves on to Afrika Korp and Reed Green Denim uniforms which are not really much harder.
The book has further sections on painting faces, sculpting figures and weathering uniforms. The face painting section is very good but requires a commitment to the use of artists oils. Using artist oils is a little tricky and more advice there would have been nice. However, face painting with oils, once mastered, will deliver a great result. The section on sculpting is really too brief and was the least useful to me.
Overall this is a grood book for anyone struggling to start adding figures to their German armor models.

Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer
By Walter A. Jacque
In modeling and painting military miniatures, there have been very few that were decent enough to be a constant reference. First was Peter Blum's "Model Soldiers" (published, by the way, by Imrie/Risley). Then we had Almark's work by Roy Dilley and D.S.V. Fosten. Unfortunately in both works, we had drawings, but no photos of actual work.
Now we have "Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer," and what a nice work it is! Bannerman's photos and descriptions of how he painted the cover figure are well worth the price of the book. The book also has articles on converting and painting an early war panzer officer as well as an article on how to do 1/48 figures (good also for aircraft figures). In fact, this is one of those books that transcends the subject matter, as anyone can use Bannerman's painting tips on other figures from other nations, as well as time periods.
Perhaps surpassing this book is the bonus DVD put out by "Armor Models" magazine (out of print, pity), but this is mostly in Japanese (no subtitles), with one part in English featuring MMiR's Pat Stancil. Still, "Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer" is well-worth the price, and is an excellent reference work on light conversions and painting figures.
