Beautiful Artwork 4.5 stars

The story is okay, the first half is better than the second as it's a typical Harlequin romance. I did like the heroine a lot, as she is a stronger and more confident female than the more often written helpless heroine. What earns this one 4.5 stars is the absolutely gorgeous artwork. The lines are simply amazing, the flow of a dress, the style and flow of their hair, even his scar. The mangaka's beautiful artwork alone is worth the price of this book!

Good beginning, but wrapped up much too quickly.

The book started out at good pace, but I have a feeling that the artist realized she spent too many pages on it and had to shove the rest of the story into the last 20% of the book. It just ends up feeling rushed and there is not enough closure on the issues for it to all feel resolved. I did enjoy the characters and the gist of the story though.

This was a really good manga. I love stories about blindness or some type of elite businessman's struggles. The artwork and plot were both beautifully done. I could feel myself getting really angry or happy with the characters. Great job! >.

In addition, this is both an examination of the way figurative art is viewed within Islam and a love story that demonstrates the tricky mechanics of marriage laws. A dead man, a dog, a murderer, a coin, two lovers, and a tree take turns narrating this tale, which is Pamuk's follow-up to the well-reviewed but little read The New Life (1997). Set in sixteenth-century Istanbul, the novel is equal parts mystery, love story, and a philosophical discussion on the nature of art and artistic vision. Two men have been killed: Elegant, a miniaturist engaged (with others) on a book project glorifying the life of the sultan, and Enishte, the man who hired the artists to do the book. During a trip to Venice, Enishte became particularly entranced with the new Italian painting, particularly its use of perspective and figurative art. He urged his employees to adapt the new art form in their illustrations of the grand book they are producing. Black, Enishte's nephew, wants to win the hand of Enishte's daughter, Shekure, which he can only do by solving the murders. This intellectual mystery will appeal to fans of Eco, Pears, and Perez-Reverte. Nancy Pearl

A Mystery of Characters

This novel is a masterwork murder mystery - it shouldn't be limited by inclusion in that genre, but a murder is the prime motivational factor. It's easy to see why Pamuk won the Nobel Prize - his skill is great. This novel is all about characters; each chapter is narrated by a different character, not all even human, nor sentient. Pure genius. It's also a very rich description of Ottoman Turkey - or one segment of it - and that causes the action to move slowly, purposefully slowly. So, it's not for quick beach read. Notably, the translation is excellent, happily because I don't read Turkish. Wish I could give 4.5 stars - it's better than 4, but translation and editing errors, and some slight heavy slowness, keep it from 5 in my opinion.

A BOOK OF RARE QUALITY

RED is not a quick read. It is a book that demands your full attention. However, that attention will be abundantly rewarded. Pamuk is an author of such great talent that I would rank him with Calvino and Borges. And, like those two great artists, Pamuk presents you with many puzzles, many visions, and vivid details of lives both real and imaginary.

Superficially, RED is a murder mystery--and a very fine one--but I doubt that any reader who has gotten beyond the first 15 pages would continue reading merely to solve the mystery. As you read, Pamuk provides you with a great variety of treats: a living picture of Istanbul in 1550, a window into the lives of the master miniaturists of the period, an exploration of the attitudes of Islam towards varying degrees of artistic realism, a finely-nuanced love quadrangle, etc. And, the narrator of each chapter is, fairly often, an object rather than a person. These non-human narrators fit seamlessly into the telling of the story: there is nothing self-conscious about them. My favorite narrator of this kind is a gold piece; you learn where it was minted, where it has traveled, what it might buy, what it feels about being counterfeit--and, of course, how it feels about its role in the larger narrative. This chapter is a tour de force, but then so are the chapters with more usual narrators.

I cannot imagine the research involved in the creation of such a novel, but Pamuk wears this erudition lightly. When I read this book, I felt as if I had been casually welcomed into listening to the conversation of not one, but several, story-tellers of great fascination.

Another plus: there is no complex vocabulary--merely complex ideas gracefully presented.

This book is very hard to put down, but it is rich in so many ways that it would be a shame to rush greedily through it. Better to savor every page. You will very seldom come across writing this good.

This is a fantastic book. In my opinion the author fully deserves his Nobel prize. I appreciate his innovative technique of alternatively allowing various characters to assume the role of the narrator in the same scene in consecutive chapters. It's like you get into the mind of each dinner guest in turn. Sometimes such narrator may even be inanimate objects such as a picture on the wall, or a gold coin in the pocket! Once you read the first chapter, which is only about 5 pages, I guarantee you'd be hooked for good. I'd give it 5 stars but for the distasteful, repeated and clearly unnecessary reference to sex with "beautiful boys". Sex with a minor, as in Lolita, as long as done in good and non-vulgar taste, in my opinion is acceptable, barely. I do not condone it, but accept it; viewing it as part of literature. In this book, it does not pass this acid test. A marvelous find and a great read except for the final point.

Seigel introduces readers to cosmopolitan Afro-Brazilians and African Americans who rarely traveled far from home but who nonetheless absorbed ideas from abroad. She suggests that studies comparing U.S. and Brazilian racial identities as two distinct constructions are misconceived. Racial formation transcends national borders; attempts to understand it must do the same.

ONE OF LOUISE HAY'S BEST CD'S EVER! IT IS SO SOOTHING!

Since 1988, I have listened to Louise Hay and bought her books. This particular CD is one of Louise Hay's best work ever! This is a short CD only about 30 minutes (great to listen to in the morning before starting the day or on a break at work). This is a very soothing CD The sound quality is excellent and the message truly inspired me to think about:

1) How to love yourself and how to accept yourself. (Part One)

2) How to forgive yourself and others. (Part Two)

This CD I will listen to often because it has caused me to realize just how important it is to love yourself and forgive yourself for past mistakes and to forgive others. It it true freedom to do thse things! I highly recommend this to anyone in need of making a positive change to your life! It really works!

This CD is apt to move you !!!

I was at a group Dec 11 where this CD was used. When done and the lights raised at least half present had tears in thier eyes. It is a powerful excercise in letting go, forgiving the past and meeting the future. Louise Hays CD's and tapes have been helping people for almost two decades. They are the best of the best. If you can buy only one, start with " You can heal your life" ( The book that made her famous and helped millions.) Most likely if you are like the rest of us, you will soon therafter want to own her CD's and tapes. Don't hesitate to buy her products. You are worth it!

Buy the printed copy, if you must buy this book.

I purchased the ebook copy thinking it would have a search function, like every other ebook on the market; however, it did not. I cannot understand why a company publishing computer-based learning literature does not come with a simple search function. If I had known beforehand, I would've purchased the printed copy. Do you really want to trust the content of a book from a company who fails to include very basic ebook functions.

If you can, do not support this company.

Horrible company

Book never came. It's been a month. Filed for a refund with Amazon. Customer service is horrible. They never looked into the case all they kept saying was it takes 14 business days to come. Tracking information stayed the same for a month and finally realized this book was never going to come so cancelled the order.

DID NOT GET WHAT I PAID FOR!!

I am highly disappointed because I purchased this product expecting to get the CD with it to complete my course work and only got the book. This really upsets me and I wish I could speak with someone about this problem, but oh well looks like I have to give my instructor some boring excuse thanks to Amazon!!!
