Not Helmstetter's Best Book

Helmstetter identifies "three breakthrough concepts in the world of personal growth" that he shares in the book:

Breakthrough #1: If you want to do your best, get a coach. Self-help works better when you have help.

Breakthrough #2: Change your Self-Talk and you will change your life.

Breakthrough #3: Successful goal-setting has to be implemented and tracked in the right way.

Helmstetter divides the book into three parts, one for each breakthrough or recommendation. The first recommendation---to find yourself a personal coach--takes the book out of the realm of self-help. It struck me as odd that Helmstetter included this section. In any case, if you're going to hire your own personal coach, you probably won't be needing this book.

The second recommendation---to change Self-Talk---is excellent. But in this book Helmstetter devotes only 70 pages to it. A better reference here is Helmstetter's own classic, "What to Say When You Talk to Your Self."

The author's third and final piece of advice---to set and track goals---is sound. But his eight-step system is too cumbersome in some ways (eight steps are a lot to take for each and every goal you set) and too superficial in others (Helmstetter assumes that the *identification* of goals is nonproblematic, which it isn't for a lot of people). A better work on goal-setting, one which is systematic, thorough, and practical, is Barbara Sher's "Wishcraft."

All in all, not a bad book, but not Helmstetter's best.

Great for lifetime achievements

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was looking for a program to use to set up my goals. I had already read "Goals" by Brian Tracy and it was nice, but didn't give me the best starting point. After reading, "What to Say When You Talk to Yourself", which was also a great book, I decided to read this one. It gave me exactly what I was looking for. The first part of the book was on self-talk, which I was familiar with after reading Helmstetters other book. The second part was on goals, which I was very easily able to apply, and I am currently using this program for all of my goal setting. The third part discusses having a personal coach. Highly recommended!!

Personal Growth at Its Simplest and Best

It doesn't surprise me that Dr. Shad Helmstetter has "done it again" in this new book. I bought his first book in 1986 and have used it in training programs all over the country ever since because he was the first to offer a reason for what we all knew--garbage in, garbage out. He also offered simple steps that gave hope to all of us who had ever tried and failed at anything. Each book he wrote I used in my life and my profession (a corporate trainer in communications). And so I bought this one and am not sorry. Again, it' an easy read. It updates all of his previous research and adds two more ingredients to the puzzle of our lives. I started using his simple steps right away and have shared them with family and friends and training groups. This book helps people get excited and feel enpowered--in control of what they are doing at a time when most of our world appears to be out of control. A must read for everyone. No one will come away without feeling like they can take the next step. Thanks, Dr. Helmstetter

I really loved this book and couldn't put it down. Alejandro was rich, sexy and broken because of his childhood. Elise wasn't any better off than he was because her parents were as bad as his. Together they were whole and the chemistry was off the charts. I recommend this book and whole heartedly give it five stars!

About the Author
Joseph M. Yap finished his Master of Library and Information Science from the University of the Philippines-Diliman School of Library and Information Studies in 2010. He likewise finished his Bachelor of Library and Information Science from the same university with a distinction Cum Laude in 2006. Joseph received meritorious awards from the following esteemed organizations: the 2014 Service Award from the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP), the 2013 Young Achiever Award given by the University of the Philippines Library Science Alumni Association, and the 2012 Asian Early Career Award bestowed by the Special Libraries Association Asian Chapter. He finished 3rd during the 1st International Collegiate Information Literacy Contest in the School of Information Management, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China in July 2010. He became the President of the ASLP in 2013 and also served the Medical and Health Librarians Association of the Philippines (MAHLAP) as Secretary (2010) and Public Relations Officer (2008-2009). Joseph has published journal articles and book chapter contributions on collaboration, consortia, information literacy, social media, corporate social responsibility and library management.

Martin Julius Perez works as an Archivist at the Department of Foreign Affairs, and a Lecturer on archives and records management at the School of Library and Information Studies, University of the Philippines (UP) - Diliman. He finished his bachelors degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) in April 2011 with the distinction of Magna Cum Laude, and currently taking his Masters degree in LIS, both in UP Diliman. In 2011, he ranked second (2nd) in the nationwide Librarians Licensure Examination. He formerly worked for the Sto. Domingo Convent Archives and Library, the Far Eastern University Library, and the Carlos P. Romulo Library of the Foreign Service Institute. In addition, he is one of the Fellows selected to participate in the Jay Jordan IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program for 2015 - the program that supports library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies.

Maria Cecilia Ingusan-Ayson is a Librarian at the Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL), a special library on Filipiniana located at Makati City, Philippines. For over ten years, she has been performing vital library functions and handling various special projects. She earned her Bachelors degree in Library and Information Science (2004) and units in Master of Library and Information Science from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She ranked 6th in the Licensure Examination for Librarians (2004). She was a recipient of the Diane K. Foster International Student Travel Award 2013 presented at the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference in San Diego, California, USA.
