A good book for a beginer.

This is an exelent little book for someone who wants to build a log cabin. It will explane all the basics to the beginer who is considering building one of these to live or to have a little camp in the woods. It shows you just about all you need to know in order to build one-even if you have allmost no money,a point I myself find quite helpfull,so all you "back to the lander's " should have it on your book shelf. It is plane and to the point and more importantly it willshow you diferent ways to get things underway it was writen by a couple who did this themselves and know all the pit falls. I highly recomend it. I am planing to get another copy for my self (mines all worn out!).

This book is it!!

Confused and disappointed with aromatherapy books that threw out disjointed information, expected you to be a chemist in reciting plant properties, or assuming you have 50- 100 essential oils for mixing concoctions (without giving precise recipe amounts), I started inter-library loaning - to finding more books. Someone had to understand that a) there were people that didn't know the first thing about this subject (and weren't interested in chemical compositions of essential oils) 2) wanted a reference book for specific situations (ie illnesses or natural beauty enhancement)and 3) didn't have $1000 to make this their overpriced hobby.

Kathi has written an orderly basic book for those of us who are just starting out, and tired of the side effect laden concoctions from pharmaceuitical companies. She starts with fascinating stories how through the ages, essential oils have kept people well. Next, she talks about how the sense of smell affects our health. She goes on to discuss the many uses for aromatherapy in medicine for anxiety, depression, insomnia stress fatigue and other uses.

I liked how she talked extensively about the safety issues in essential oils (as opposed to info I received from MLM true believers who skip warnings about issues such as liver safety in prolonged use of some of the more powerful oils). THESE OILS NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD before just using them willy-nilly. She lists varying toxicity of different oils and why they are so to be used sparingly, if at all.

She has more, specific recommendations for dilution, for body oil, massage oil, in the bath, steam bowl inhaling, foot and sitz baths and so on. She even has a chapter on how to make your own herb infused oils, salves and vinegars.

Kathi recommends 10 basic oils (with a few added for women's issues) and gives recipes sticking mainly to those same recommended ones. Then she starts with her recipes for therapies (for digestive, bowel, repiratory, eye, ear, muscular, urinary, yeast problems and so on). There's a long list with recipes and how many drops of each to use. She then goes into the beauty angle with body and hair care. There are chapters on oil distillation and finding pure unadulterated essential oils. Plus, finally she lists about 50 oils, what they do medicinally and emotionally.

All in all, I find this a step by step book for the uninitiated. It's good to know there's someone so caring to explain things simply. THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. All the rest I have read seem pure junk in comparison.

Educational, inspirational, and easy-to-read

Such a great book. It's user-friendly and I reference it all the time. It has great explanations and quick-reference charts. I bought it for an aromatherapy course I took in college, and I learned so much from it. It has lead to many beautiful and helpful creations for my family, friends, and myself. I really appreciate how it's so organized and thorough. I highly recommend it to anyone who is just starting out with essential oils, or who wants to expand their knowledge of the chemistry and history of aromatherapy.

Very Interesting

I am new to Aromathearapy and this book gave me more than what I was looking for - in both a good and unexpected way. On the one hand, I've learned a lot about the history and the book goes into more detail about certain aspects (the Chemistry of the oils, for example), which I love. On the other hand, I was sort of looking for a quick and simple book that said "here's the science, here's a list of all the things you can accomplish with aromatherapy with accompanying oil, here's the different ways to use the oils, and here's a list of precautions to consider." This book did not do as much of that as I would like but I'm still glad I made the purchase because I ended learning a lot and this expanded my interest. I'd still recommend this for a beginner but maybe I would have chosen it as my second book instead of my first because it's far more than a basic overview. That being said, it's a great investment and you can find a lot of the things I was initially looking for online.

John Lennon 101

Musicians, writers, artists and fans alike should read this candid biopic into the lives of John & Yoko during the prime of their lives and populariy. They were involved. They were controversial. They were naive. They were important and outspoken... and most of all, vulnerable. Anthony Fawcett was more than sympathetic... he was privileged to find himself involved at a time when the magic of John Lennon transcended who he even thought he was. Forever dispells the silly myth that Yoko, Linda or anything other than John's decision broke up the Beatles.

His Life in the 1970s

John Lennon: One Day at a Time, Anthony Fawcett

Anthony Fawcett was born in 1948 in England and studied Fine Art at Oxford. He started writing as an art critic. He lives in New York and wrote this book in 1976. Fawcett worked full time with John and Yoko running their office, organizing their daily schedule, and cataloging their writings and films (`Introduction'). Lennon had a complex and varying character (pp.10-11).

`Part One - The Man' tells how his life when he met John Lennon. It tells about "The Acorn Event", a project called "art". [Do these "art projects" raise a question about judgment?] The "avant-garde set" sounds like a collection of wealthy wastrels (p.28). "Bizarre events" (p.29). "Lollypop Art" (p.38)? Was Lennon's arrest for drugs caused by planted evidence (p.39)? Did the "Two Virgins" album show mental problems (p.40)? "Demented freaks" (p.41)? "I was stoned all the time" (p.42). John was "dropping acid almost constantly" (p.43). Did the events in "The Peace Politician" have any effect?

There were big problems in mismanagement at Apple (p.81). These money problems led to the end of the Beatles (p.89). "The Dream Is Over" tells about John's feelings. The Lennon's moved to New York in 1971 and lived in the West Village (p.119). But President Nixon personally ordered him kicked out of America (p.124). In 1976 John became a permanent resident of the US (p.149).

`Part Two - The Magic' tells about John as a musician, poet, and painter. The author is a fan of John Lennon. Others will not find it worth their time to read this book. It presents John as a deeply troubled individual, probably due to his use of drugs. Whiskey did the same job on other singers. In December 1980 a national monthly magazine printed an interview with John Lennon. They quoted him as going around Manhattan without a bodyguard. Whats amazing, Narain Ishaya answered questions for me that I did not even know I had. I also Discovered a state of Happiness while actually reading the book. Classical social experiments of human appearance

I first read Elaine Hatfield's (et al.) book after being referred to it by a nationally used Intro to Psychology Textbook. Her book reveals, through objective experiments, how the human race interprets appearances and judges people based on looks. Quite intriguing.
One of the classical experiments discussed involved comparing pictures of similar-looking men with women of various attractiveness levels. Apparently people think higher of a man that is alone than one with an unattractive female. Interesting.
