This is by far one of the best books I've ever bought in my entire life. As a born New Englander, you have to read this book. It is not only filled with amazing, super cool artifacts from all time periods, it is filled with great pictures and an immense amount of really cool information. This is a must-read for any New Englander or anyone interested in history or artifacts. What a great job Mr. Bagley did writing and creating this book! It has by far over-met my expectations. You will not regret buying this book.

Top notch for beginners

Yoga for Beginners is great introduction to this lifestyle enhancing hobby. The best thing about it is the pictures. I've read so many descriptions about what I should be doing, but having included pictures lets it all make sense.

I learnt a lot of stuff about Yoga that I didn't know before from my general reading around online so it is clear this book has been well researched. It concentrates on the novice and so is not suitable for an experienced practitioner. All in all I think it is a great introduction for a beginner like me who is just getting into it.

As one who is extremely interested in health matters, I find as I get older I need to do more stretching to keep supple. Indeed it was suggested that I consider Yoga. I found Michelle's book "Yoga For Beginners" very suitable for anyone such as myself who is just beginning or considering Yoga.

The book talks about the important benefits of Yoga, what types are suitable for beginners, what Yoga is and is not, plus much more information that you should find very useful and beneficial. There are pictures of the various exercises to help cement the step by step instructions.

For myself, I found the listed benefits of each exercise extremely important. In addition the book covers the important aspects of Yoga equipment and accessories. This is a well structured and easy to follow book, aimed at beginners of Yoga

Got this book for my girlfriend and started reading it. I didn't realise how much more to yoga there was than I thought, quite an eye opener. Easy to follow this book is well illustrated for each position and has great instructions. Definitely recommended. I think I'll have to get her the other books in this series.

Good light summer read

You can tell from the title and cover that this book does not take itself too seriously. Levy here has done a good job assembling a fun, light summer read. It's a big book, colorful with a lot of nice pictures, and its cheap! List is $14.95, but it can be had for around $10.

Nearly all of the 26 topics chosen are important, and at one time or another most of these disputes got a lot of press, so much of this material will be familiar to technical people, still I think almost everyone will find some interesting new material here. For example I knew nothing about the disputes Freud had had with Jung and Adler in the early 1900's, the subject of two of the articles. I was unaware that Montagnier and Gallo, who I remember battled over credit for discovering the HIV retrovirus, are now friends, but only Montagnier was included in the Nobel prize. Or polio vacine guys, Sabin and Salk, do you remember which used the killed virus and which the weakened? Levy has read up on these 26 cases and generally does a good job giving a pithy and even handed summary of the dispute in a few pages, and when helpful he includes a timeline.

The disputes are grouped into four categories:
1) Earth Sciences
2) Evolution and Palaeobiology
3) Biology and Medicine
4) Physics, Astronomy and Math

Most articles start with unlabeled picture/portrait of the disputants. I finally figured that a dispute titled A vs B has A's picture left and B's right. But sometimes there is still portrait uncertainty. For example the article on who invented fingerprints for criminal identification is titled Faulds vs Galston and Herschel. There are two portraits. The left I presume is Faulds, but who is the man on the right, Galston or Herschel?

I think this book should be three stars, but as the only other reviewer gave it two stars I am giving it four to raise the average to three.

Thought-provoking look at the human element in scientific controversies

The ideal of dispassionate objectivity in scientific research exists in tension with the reality that scientific research is conducted by fallible human beings who exhibit a wide range of different personalities, emotions, and personal interests. This book provides a thought-provoking look at how the personalties, emotions, and personal interests of scientific researchers can threaten the ideal of dispassionate scientific research. The author discusses 26 disputes in the history of science to show how the ideal of dispassionate objectivity occasionally has been forgotten, ignored, or blatantly abandoned by some researchers determined to promote their theories, attack opposing theories, seek personal fame, or vilify opponents.

The book is too brief and episodic to provide a thorough or scholarly history of contentious scientific disputes. Furthermore, the author occasionally lapses into bare speculation and undocumented surmise about the motives and thought processes of some of the disputants he discusses. However, the book does provide an interesting perspective on the history of science.

Readers interested in other books about how personalities, emotions, and personal interests can affect the history of medicine, mathematics, and technology might consider also taking a look at Dana Mackenzie, The Universe in Zero Words: The Story of Mathematics as Told through Equations; F. Gonzalez-Crussi, A Short History of Medicine (Modern Library Chronicles); and Robert V. Bruce, Lincoln and the Tools of War. And, readers interested in how rhetoric and argumentation have played a role in the history of science might consider also taking a look at Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Figures in Science.

Scientific feuds - good value

Review of `Scientific feuds from Galileo to the human genome project' by Joel Levy in 2010 published by New Holland Publishers of London.

"Scientific feuds from Galileo to the human genome project" is what might be called a coffee table book. Looking at the pricing is instructive as paperback editions are more expensive than the hardback edition, said to be available at $2.02 new or used. It is the hardback edition that is being reviewed here. I have some criticisms of the book, but it is certainly good value at this price. The book is 224 pages long, nicely printed, with twenty-six feuds and eight features considered in very short attractively illustrated articles. A feature is used here to mean a generalized theme, such as `fraud in science' and `science and politics', which add to the books general usefulness. My dictionary defines a feud as `lasting mutual hostility' and the feuds chosen all seem to fit this definition.

Most articles contain a diagrammatic timeline summarizing the times when various events took place and these are useful. The criticism must be the lack of depth, but there is a broad sweep of science covered worldwide from the fourteenth century to the present day. The purpose of the book is to interest a wider audience than just those already interested in science's fascinating history. I enjoyed the rival publication is "Great Feuds in Science" by Hal Hellman subtitled, "Ten of the liveliest disputes ever" (already reviewed by this reviewer), where article length averaged twenty pages, but this too was criticized by others as being insufficiently detailed. For those of us who want more depth about a particular dispute, perhaps about Newton, with three of his feuds given some prominence in this book, there are numerous options such as "Never at Rest: A Biography of Isaac Newton" by Richard S. Westfall, "Isaac Newton" by James Gleick, or "Isaac Newton" by Gale E. Christianson amongst many alternatives.

The hope and purpose of books like "Scientific feuds" is that it will interest some readers sufficiently to become motivated enough to tackle some of the deeper `history of science' literature. For value and presentation, this book is recommended.

Somewhat of a Disappointment

When I decided that an outdoor wood-burning sauna was in my future I sought a book that would contain detailed information on sauna construction, stove usage and evaluation, and the like. Instead, Roy's book, though enjoyable, was far less than a "..complete guide.."

An enormous amount of time is spent on cordwood construction (inappropriate for us living in hardwood areas) and virtually little or no space devoted to selecting, evaluating and using the many stove options that are available on the market.

I am certain that Mr. Roy could write such a book. His passion for and knowledge of the sauna is apparent throughout the book. It's a disappointment that this "complete guide" fell short of my expectations.

Though I don't feel that I wasted the book's purchase price (I am now more enthusiastic about my yet-to-be-built sauna than ever), I wish that Roy's book would have imparted more of his obvious knowledge about those matters that are of interest to us non-cordwood oriented neophytes.

A fine book

I wouldn't feel compelled to write a review of this book, except for the low star rating of the only other reviewer of this book [at this writing anyhow]. This is an excellent book for building a free-standing sauna--as long as cordwood masonry building style works for you. Rob Roy is the master of this technique and written much about it in a number of books. He has an easy style and knows his material. But yes, if you're looking to build a wood-only sauna, look elsewhere.

Some useful information, but Not a balanced guide

We bought this book hoping it would give us the basic information we needed to build an outdoor sauna (ex. materials list, basic dementions, review of different types of stoves, etc). While there was some of this information, most of the book was dedicated to Cord Wood construction. This was interesting, but not the way we wanted to build. I wish there had been a more balanced amount of information on all the different types of sauna construction (log, cord wood, conventional framing, etc.)

I am sorry if your professor requires this book...

This text book is not readable. It just doesn't have a good layout to it. For instance, the pages don't contain the chapter number you are in. You have to figure it out based on examples. One of the chapters(I think chapter 12) was labeled as chapter 11 in the problems, which led to massive amounts of confusion when we did that HW.

All of the constants that the book expects you to use are buried insides large paragraphs, therefore it usually wasn't easy to scan a section to find what you were looking for.

In addition, several constants, despite being crucial components of the concepts about the atomic level operation of semiconductors, were mentioned nonchalantly and rarely had any explanation as to their importance. It usually meant spending half an hour on the internet seeking understanding where this book should have provided.

It contains some errors as well. The only reason we know that is because some of the equations were incorrect compared with internet resources and the professor's knowledge himself.

All in all this is a terrible book that was written by professors, for professors. It isn't good for students because it is so disorganized and does not do a good job of introducing difficult concepts of semiconductor physics.

Excellent Basic Introduction for Engineers

This is a welcome 2nd edition of Sze's basic introduction to the technology underlying modern conventional semiconductor devices. The first edition of 1985 served the needs of its time admirably, but the 17 years since have seen much progress in the field, especially in the area of fabrication technology.
It should be stressed that this text is an introductory text, covering the basics well, but not taking the material much beyond the intermediate level. It is also very much an engineering text rather than a physics text, for the focus is squarely placed on the technology and not the underlying solid-state physics. As such, it is suited to undergraduate electrical/electronic engineers wishing to gain some appreciation of the physics underpinning conventional semiconductor devices, and the way they are fabricated, or for physicists wishing to gain some perspective on the fabrication and operation of the same, but it is in no way a comprehensive textbook on semiconductor physics.
Nevertheless, the material that is presented is well chosen, and well explained. The English prose style is somewhat pedestrian, but this is no great flaw in an engineering textbook. All the essentials of semiconductor materials (almost exclusively Si and GaAs) are described, the p-n junction, as well as the major device types (BJTs, (MOS/MES)FETs, microwave diodes, LEDs, lasers, etc.) and the modern technologies employed for their fabrication. In some senses, the section on fabrication technologies, taking up fully a third of the book, is perhaps its best section, for fabrication is rarely given such emphasis (although, again, not detailed, but covering most salient points) in an introductory book.
The pedagogical method employed by Sze is sound, and relevant worked examples are provided. The only short-coming is perhaps the relative brevity of the end-of-chapter problems, for which no answers are provided, but, in such a textbook, I feel that it is not really necessary to work through them to gain a solid grasp of the material presented.
Physically, the book is much more attractive than the previous edition. The cover is more appealling, and the text is well set in a two-colour print. The diagrams are nothing special, but they are generally clear and explain their point well, and are certainly much improved from the first edition, especially those in the fabrication section.
Just a final comment on other reviews: it is difficult to see how this book may be regarded as a bible of any sort, for the material is covered in quite a superficial manner. I wonder if they are not mistaking it for the 'big Sze', viz., Sze's 'Physics of Semiconductor Devices', which is another, much larger and more comprehensive, work of Sze's.

Falling a bit short in both physics and technology

I started using this book for my undergraduate course in semiconductor technology, and I believe I would have failed the exam if I relied solely on it.

Let me explain: the exposition is really exciting and consistent, but if you were interested in the physics side of the phenomena in semiconductors and semiconductor devices, you'd be left wanting for more. "Just when it was getting interesting", you are left with a few paragraphs that just aren't there. If you are the least scientifically curious, this will most likely frustrate you (it is also a credit to Sze as a scientific author, as he made you actually want to know more, through his systematic exposition). I found that even the very old cornerstone book "Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors" by Shockley, gives more satisfaction to the reader, as Shockley has a much broader, freer and thorough approach at discussing the physics of semiconductors.

From the technological point of view, the book in question doesn't seem very useful. It works on some fundamentals but, again, it will only get your lips wet but thirsty. Still, I think Sze tried to cover the bases in a field that is in explosive development such as semiconductor technology.

From both points of view - physics and technology - the book feels a lot like a teaser for Sze's masterpiece, "Physics of Semiconductor Devices" (2nd edition), which is a book I would wholeheartedly recommend without reservations. And herein lies the reason why I gave this ("Semiconductor Devices") book only three stars: if I give 5 stars to "Physics of Semiconductor Devices" by the same author, then the object of this review deserves 3. Seeing as though the price of both books is almost the same, this should at least make you think for a moment.
