Immoderate "moderate Islam"

Edip Yuksel, a Muslim, wrote this book (in part) to denounce those who believe that the Muslim holy book, the Quran, allows Muslims to wage war against non-Muslims who fail to submit (kowtow) to Islamist rule. The author also wrote a revised Koran called the "Quran: a Reformist Translation." In the latter book, the author didn't just provide a differing translation of the Koran, he eviscerates it by removing all of the sections of the Koran that either blatantly or seemingly enabled Muslims to attack non-Muslims who failed to submit to Islamic taxation [jizya]. Yuksel, a Muslim, appears to acknowledge that the four major ahadith works are bogus (p. 66), and, therefore, their commentaries stating that the Muslim prophet Mohammad championed warfare against infidels to force them to pay tribute to Muslim authorities are bogus, too. In `Warmongers' the author reprints a number of FRONTPAGE articles regarding several conferences that this pro-Muslim author participated in with others who questioned the validity of the Muslim faith. Yuksel apparently believes that these reprints support his contentions; I disagree. But I applaud his reprinting them - they are the best portions of his book. Because Yukel rebukes so much common understanding about Mohammad, how he believes that his 'reformist' Islamic theology will be accepted by mainstream/ moderate Muslims is baffling to me - but that is a cross that he will have to carry. Yuksel denounces the writings of many individuals with whom he disagrees: Glenn Beck, David Horowitz, Daniel Pipes, Ali Sina, Robert Spencer, Wafa Sultan, Ibn Waraq, Bill Warner and Starbucks coffee (along with about 150 other individuals or corporations)... he calls them "Enemies of Peace" and/or "Warmongers" (p. 1). This book is simply so bad with its taqiyya writings that I will be resting it on my bookshelf alongside its companion book "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion".

Barking up the wrong tree

Yuksel is a "moderate" Muslim who has obviously had enough of the difficult questions asked by those he purports to criticise in this book. You can read the debates between him and Robert Spencer as well as Bill Warner that were published on Frontpage Magazine's website in this book. One example - if you want to look for it online (since I can't publish the URL here) - is from 2008, entitled "A New Koran?". Judge for yourself his views, analytical method and understanding of the problem with radical Islam, Islamism or Jihadism (whatever phrase you prefer) before you buy this book. I found it lacking and verging on the personal. That's always a sign, in my opinion, that someone hasn't got their ideas straight and can't handle the issues raised. Instead of spending so much time and energy attacking those people that are raising difficult questions about the nature of classical Islamic doctrines and history and the subsequent prospects for tackling radical Islam, Yuksel could have spent his time more effectively and convincingly rebutting their claims and insights with reference to what these people actually have said. Let's see a more intellectually honest approach by secular Muslims that presents a reformed Islam based on an acknowledgement and rejection of the tenets of Islam that exhort jihad for the sake of Islamic supremacy - so well compiled in Andrew Bostom's Legacy of Jihad - rather than character assassinations. I'll be honest and say I haven't read this book, though I have read the debates so I have read some of it, but I was prompted to provide this review when I saw that Yuksel himself has "reviewed" his own book and given it, guess what, five stars.

Fake, or written in ignorance, Look elsewhere for the truth

I am glad I did not pay money for the book I read, sorry Amazon. Yuksel is obviously a "moderate" Muslim who fails to reflect on the effect of moderate Germans on Hitler in World War 2.
The Koran is either the written word of Mohammad and assuming he is a prophet or it is not. If it is then it must be taken for what it says, thus Yuksel is more of a Infidel and not a moderate or it is not a holy book at all thus making it a man made religion or should I more accurately refer to it as a Vatican made religion based on the testimony of ex-Jesuit priest, Alberto Rivera. I have looked at the Koran and read much of it, I find it poorly written and very much like the ramblings of a hate filled man who had issues. I feel most comic books are better put together then the Koran, that is the truth, not an insult, so please do not take it as such. If Yuksel is not a total fake and liar then he is just fooling himself if he thinks a moderate muslim movement will ever be successful without tearing out half the Koran, and if that were done then one would have to conclude it was based on false teachings and should be tossed out altogether.
In defense of Osama, he is living and practicing what the Koran says, Yuksel is living and practicing what he wishes it said. I could be wrong and Yuksel is just taking this stance to make money selling books...ect. Truth be told it seems like dealing with this religion is a one way street, muslims want others to compromise for them, but in return the muslims don't truly compromise for the sake of others and honesty is expected of others but muslims are forgiven for being dishonest to non-muslims. I would take the word of Robert Spencer over Yuksel any day.

Gr 6 Up-A strong and complete biography of the famous Confederate general. Robertson's detailed portrait of his subject's youth reveals the many experiences that shaped the man. But the emphasis, of course, is on Jackson's life and work during the Civil War, and it is here that the book's strengths and weaknesses are most apparent. The author uses copious primary sources, smoothly integrating accounts from Jackson's soldiers, superiors, and family members, and from the many letters he wrote home to his wife describing the progression of the war. While clearly a fan, Robertson does not shrink from pointing out Jackson's failings, offering historically sound explanations for the man's actions and a clear account of how he acquired his famous nickname. The black-and-white photographs and reproductions are well selected and well placed throughout. Unfortunately, at about midpoint, the thoroughness approaches textbooklike monotony, limiting the book's appeal to young readers, who may also be confused by the constant interchange of the terms "Union," "Federal," and "Yankee." The lack of keys for the maps and battle diagrams is a great disappointment, rendering them practically moot for student purposes. However, the perennial Civil War and biography assignments and the topic's draw for Civil War buffs should secure the book circulation.

Orphaned as a child, he lived with relatives, then supported himself until his admittance to West Point in 1842. Jackson gained experience in the Mexican War, and after leaving the military, he taught at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. Jackson is best known today as a beloved Confederate general. Robertson finds a good balance between Jackson's life before that war and his experiences in the campaigns that made him famous. Readers will get to know him as a man and then watch him in action during the pivotal years from the beginning of the war in 1861 until his death in 1863. The many illustrations include reproductions of period photographs and prints as well as several maps and photos of artifacts. Robertson's extensive source notes and a bibliography are appended. About the Author
James I. Robertson Jr. teaches the largest Civil War history course in the nation and is the recipient of every major award given in the field of Civil War history. His latest book, Stonewall Jackson: The Man, The Soldier, The Legend, has won an unprecedented eight awards in national competition. A native of Danville, Virginia, Dr. Robertson received a B.A. from Randolph-Macon College and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Emory University. He is currently the Alumni Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he lives.

"Be good, or Stonewall Jackson will get you".

This, according to a very enjoyable biography by James Robertson, is how Union mothers in the years of the Civil War tried to convince their unruly children to behave. It is one of many fascinating stories in the incredible life and military career of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

I have always heard Jackson described as "Lee's right hand" and "the Confederacy's greatest general". I have never studied exactly how he came to gain this reputation, nor considered how much it was deserved. While I was reading this book, I came across a military history magazine with the cover story (I think this is how they phrased it) "How Strange WAS Stonewall Jackson?" After finishing this biography, I'd have to say "pretty darn strange". He was a man of mediocre intellect but exceptional drive. He had a religious faith of childlike simplicity to which he was entirely devoted, and which left him utterly convinced that he was called to military service. He behaved with reckless courage in many battles, in part because he seems to have found it inconceivable that God would let him be injured. He fought for the South, and believed slavery was part of God's plan, but he was a devoted teacher of religion and literacy to slaves in his home church. He drove his men on such fast forced marches that they took to calling themselves "foot cavalry", yet they loved him like a father. He was a stern disciplinarian with students a Virginia Military Institute, yet a pushover with young children. The contradictions continue for most of the book.

I struggled to decide how to rate this. I think the reader most apt to enjoy this would be one with an interest in history , but enough unfamiliarity with the details of the key Civil War battles that this would not seem redundant. I think a avid fan of such histories would still get enough out of this to find it worthwhile. I think that a reader not in those two categories might be somewhat put off by Jackson's strangeness, but would still be rewarded with a fast-paced look at the details of a great American's life. I give it four stars, and I'd go to 4 and 1/2 if I could.

A well-written history of an American Icon for middle-schoolers

This delightful book is written more for middle schoolers than anyone else. It is a short, concise history of General Jackson and I highly recommend it. It is easy to read and is a good resource for student papers. Stonewall Jackson is an American icon and his exemplary life serves as a guidepost for every U.S. citizen.

Logical, simple (but not always easy) ideas are presented to help me become more intelligent. I've already started putting some ideas to practice. I have a long way to go, but thank goodness I bought this book on a whim and was made acutely aware of those behaviors I need to focus on adjusting.

Increasing one's emotional intelligence takes practice and patience and the author is great at encouraging the reader to continue their path. This book is a MUST for anyone who continues to believe that others are intentionally "pushing their buttons"! Its a must have addition to a personal growth library!

This book is a wonderful tool for an individual seeking ways to become self-aware of their emotional intelligence! The author has taken several complex strategies and presented them in a way that anyone can understand and implement.

A personal, honest review of an excellent read

I loved this book, found it to be extremely helpful to me, and still refer to it at times. I came here to copy the URL to send to a friend so she could buy it, and am puzzled by the two bad reviews and comments. The extraordinary number of 'helpful' votes they got has served to put those two at the top of the list, and that's too bad. I wonder how many people have not given this book a second thought because of it.

As with any book, the writing style either appeals or doesn't. I love his writing for the depth of feeling conveyed, and the clarity often stuns. Lines are in boldface for a reason, and I personally didn't find them annoying or superfluous. There is repetition of ideas: this is a psychologist with (I think) outstanding communication skills, who rephrases important concepts to connect with as many readers as possible. What seems crystal clear to one may seem murky to another unless explained in a way that resonates with him. It also serves to reinforce the concept. Are reviews not to be trusted because they didn't include examples of EI Theory from the book? Mine probably won't either. I'm not a good book or movie reviewer, and don't usually review them for that reason.

I will say this: I've been going through some very intense times the last six years, with accompanying depression. I've read a lot of psychology books trying to get through it. And none of them helped me as much as this simple book. I think most of us know while we can't control much of what life throws our way, we can control how we react to it. But HOW? I'm a stoic: be strong, suck it up, stuff it down, don't whine, don't lay it on people. Be p-o-s-i-t-i-v-e. Meanwhile the noise in my head never let up when this last crisis began. The worries, the fears and regrets, the mental self-flagellation. EI Theory is about using logic to control the emotional ways in which we ALL react to just about everything, even if we don't show it outwardly. I think it is one of the simplest concepts I've ever read, and can literally change people's lives in the way they interact with each other. It can change people's lives in the way they view themselves, their past, their present, their future. It can alter the decisions they make going forward, both little and big. It isn't easy to implement, believe me: however many years you've been on this earth is how many years of thought patterns you'll be working against. It awakened me to the fact that I, an intelligent and rational person, very often have irrational reactions to things. And so do you, whether you realize it or not. This book taught me to ask myself WHY I'm having a particular reaction to someone or something, even a memory, how I CHOSE to have that reaction, and how it's possible to change my reaction to it. And he gives concrete steps with which to accomplish this.

We continually pin our emotional states to outside influences: he made me mad, she embarrassed me, they make me feel inferior, that made me feel like Sucker of the Year. WHY DOES SHE DO THAT WHEN SHE KNOWS I DON'T LIKE IT?? Like we all don't have one of those in our lives whom we blame for making us crazy sometimes. We accept this lack of responsibility for our emotions because we've always been told it's normal. "We're only human, after all-- most people would feel that way given those circumstances." That doesn't mean it has to be that way. Read this book. I took a chance because it sounded interesting. If you don't want to buy it, get it from the library. If nothing else it will change the way you see things, and make you aware of your reactions. Whether or not you do anything with it is up to you. As the good doctor says, frequently, "It will take a force of will." The hits keep coming but I'm much calmer inside, and peacefulness cannot be overrated.

After reading Go Suck a Lemon I was so interested in EI Theory that I read others of his, along with numerous articles on his blog. His book on handling criticism is as good as this one. Because it expands on some basic concepts, I suppose some readers might find it repetitious. When I'm on a quest for insight, I will deal with some repetition in order to glean even one profound statement. Very often it's the exact one I was seeking.

First and foremost - what a great read! I love the author's writing style. The content really makes you stop and self-assess. The author helped me come to the realization that I am not very emotionally intelligent, BUT...that I can become so. Logical, simple (but not always easy) ideas are presented to help me become more intelligent. I've already started putting some ideas to practice. I have a long way to go, but thank goodnedd I bought this book on a whim and was made acutely aware of those behaviors I need to focus on adjusting.

The book was a fun read. The author, Debborah McClatchey, did a nice job developing the characters. I found myself so involved that my heart would beat like crazy during some of the more intense parts of the book. It was amazing how quickly I finished it, but then I couldn't put it down.

A thrilling story with lots of suspense and exciting twists

It was heart warming the way the little group of girlfriends cared about each other and how they looked for one another while a very cunning killer with a twisted mind was terrorizing their neighborhood. Deborah McClatchey did a great job of describing the girlfriend’s characters. I especially liked Chloe, she had a sweet and delightful character. I was totally absorbed in this gripping story. I kept reading, and turning the pages, I just had to find out what was going to happen next. I was thoroughly entertained by this enjoyable read, which was thrilling with lots of suspense and exciting twist. I highly recommend this book.

First I must correct the Amazon description of this work. IT IS A COMPLETE HEBREW ENGLISH AND GREEK ENGLISH SET. Not just Hebrew English. So it covers ALL books of the KJV bible.
As close as one can get without being a scholar in Hebrew and Greek to the original manuscripts. So easy to use for the biblical student.
I also have the single volume book and this is much easier to use.

Incorrect and Missing Strong's Numbers

I was excited to expand my library with this valuable resource, however within the first two lines in Genesis there are errors - missing Strong's numbers and incorrect Strong's numbers. Within the first two lines... very discouraging. I'm so thankful there are men and women who have commited to investing hours into providing valuable resources for Bible study - and I eagerly await a revised version (in printed form) where many of these mistakes are corrected! Until then I have found the following online tools to be very valuable and accurate resources:

Wonderful Bible.

This by far is the best Bible I have ever picked up. It has so much more information about the original Bible, and when I have looked at other versions of Hebrew Bibles, they leave out, or change what was written. This Bible has so much more than the King James version as I see where KJV changed the meaning of situations which sometimes which is not that important, but I still do not see why things should be changed at all. Genesis is written like the original Bible and Mr. Green used the exact words and did not change it. I cannot wait to get all the way through and start back over. I can say that I love this Bible and it is so easy to read. I highly recommend it to anyone that just wants to sit down and read the Bible all the way through as it is plainly wrote. The KJV can be difficult for some people to understand, and "The Interlinear Bible" is so clear, that it leaves you without any doubt what is meant. Such a wonderful Bible it is.

DAVID ADAMS RICHARDS is the author of numerous acclaimed and prize-winning novels, including Incidents in The Life of Markus Paul, which was published to rave reviews; The Lost Highway, which was nominated for the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction and the Scotiabank Giller Prize in 2008; The Friends of Meager Fortune, which won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book; and Mercy Among the Children, which won the 2000 Giller Prize and was a finalist for the GG and the Trillium Award.
