This Was A Very Good, Helpful, and Inspiring Read!
By Book Lover
This is not the type of genre of books that I normally purchase, because I tend to be self-motivated already. However, I'm glad that I did! I was initially interested in the book, because I'd heard about the author's extraordinary life: becoming a successful business owner (several times over), personal life and fitness coach, scholar, and author after overcoming substance abuse, incarceration, and even surviving sexual abuse. So in essence, I wanted to learn more about him! I have a heart for people who find themselves in the circumstances that he did very early on in life, because I truly believe that any one of us could have been in that same place. Nonetheless, by chapter 5 I was fully invested in the reading of the material for myself -- no longer just out of curiosity and general support. There are some serious pearls of wisdom within the book.

In his discourse on the need to forgive ourselves he states that, "Most people are unfamiliar with self-forgiveness, and the lack thereof puts it amongst the top reasons for self-sabotaging behaviors...Therefore, before a life changing journey can have a good chance of success, there has to be an in-depth and honest inventory of self." I certainly agree with him in these statements. We are taught to seek forgiveness of others rather disproportionately from the forgiveness that we owe to ourselves so that we can progress in life. Undoubtedly, unforgiveness that has gone unidentified has the potential to not only steal the joy out of living but also alter ones destiny in life. Therefore, reading material such as this, even when you are self-motivated such as myself, can add such tremendous value and aid towards achieving that great mantra: "Know thyself" (Socrates).

I tend to be a transparent person, and I appreciated that quality in the author as he shared many of the details of his painful and troubled past. He did not "sugar coat" anything. It was very poignant. I was clearly able to distinguish who he was back then, to who he is today -- and the steps that he took to get there were clearly defined and presented to the reader. As a bonus, there is an accompanying workbook that the author has chosen to include at the end of the book. This was a great investment and definitely a "good read."

This is a powerful book about never giving up. It's a wonderful motivational tool for anyone out there who is struggling to succeed. The way Clinton McCoy talks about his failures and his mistakes in a storytelling format to prepare the reader on how to face adversity. Mr. McCoy drives home the point of overcoming obstacles! This book is truly an inspiration and his words make it plain and simple for anyone looking to take their lives to the next level. Even though Mccoy had a different upbringing and background than me, I still could relate. These books have motivated me to go after my dream, to not be embarrassed about it and to work hard for it is both inspiring and motivating as it instructs people on how to reach out and achieve the things in life that they want to. I was very impressed by this book-and recommended it to several of my close friends.I am particularly impressed with the way he outlines the problems with human nature-and history examples that instructs you, the reader, how to solve and create your own dream. This was truly a life-changing and inspirational read. It should be a required reading in Universities across the country as a rite of passage! Thank you Clinton McCoy.

The Toughest Indian in the World, by Sherman Alexie

A beloved American writer whose books are championed by critics and readers alike, Sherman Alexie has been hailed by Time as "one of the better new novelists, Indian or otherwise." Now his acclaimed new collection, The Toughest Indian in the World, which received universal praise in hardcover, is available in paperback. In these stories, we meet the kind of American Indians we rarely see in literature -- the kind who pay their bills, hold down jobs, fall in and out of love. A Spokane Indian journalist transplanted from the reservation to the city picks up a hitchhiker, a Lummi boxer looking to take on the toughest Indian in the world. A Spokane son waits for his diabetic father to come home from the hospital, tossing out the Hershey Kisses the father has hidden all over the house. An estranged interracial couple, separated in the midst of a traffic accident, rediscover their love for each other. A white drifter holds up an International House of Pancakes, demanding a dollar per customer and someone to love, and emerges with $42 and an overweight Indian he dubs Salmon Boy. Sherman Alexie's voice is one of remarkable passion, and these stories are love stories -- between parents and children, white people and Indians, movie stars and ordinary people. Witty, tender, and fierce, The Toughest Indian in the World is a virtuoso performance by one of the country's finest writers.

Amazon.com Review
Call Sherman Alexie any number of things--novelist, poet, filmmaker, thorn in the side of white liberalism--just don't call him "universal." Aside from his well-documented distaste for the word, its fuzziness misses the point. The Toughest Indian in the World, Alexie's second collection, succeeds as brilliantly as it does because of its particularity. These aren't stories about the Indian Condition; they're stories about Indians--urban and reservation, street fighters and yuppies, husbands and wives. "She understood that white people were eccentric and complicated and she only wanted to be understood as eccentric and complicated as well," thinks the Coeur d'Alene narrator of "Assimilation," who's married (unhappily) to a white man. And yet the issue of race has taken up permanent residence inside her house: the marriage survives, but it's love that's the most thorough assimilation of all.

Like The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, much of The Toughest Indian in the World combines deft psychological realism with the kind of narrative logic more commonly found in dreams. In "South by Southwest," a white drifter finds love on a "nonviolent killing spree" with an overweight Indian he calls Salmon Boy; in "Dear John Wayne," the cowboy actor falls in love with a young Spokane woman and proves himself a charmingly feminist hero. ("Oh, sons, you're just engaging in some harmless gender play," he tells his boys when he finds them trying on lipstick.) But for every bear hibernating on top of the Catholic church, there's also a GAP-wearing, Toyota-driving urban Indian on a quest for his roots. In both realist and surrealist modes, Alexie writes incantatory prose--as well as the kind of dialogue that makes even secondary characters leap into sudden focus: "'What?' asked Wonder Horse, as simple a question as could possibly be tendered, though he made it sound as if he'd asked Where's the tumor?"

Alexie is sometimes guilty of painting his white characters with too broad a brush. (Is any anthropologist truly as obtuse as the one in "Dear John Wayne"? Could any reader really want Mary Lynn, the narrator of "Assimilation," to stay with her boorish white husband?) Yet his kind of firebrand politics still has the power to shock. A harrowing fable about whites kidnapping Indians for the medical properties of their blood, "The Sin Eaters" could be dismissed as paranoid if it weren't so hauntingly written: On that morning, the sun rose and bloomed like blood in a glass syringe. The entire Spokane Indian Reservation and all of its people and places were clean and scrubbed. The Spokane River rose up from its bed like a man who had been healed and joyously wept all the way down to its confluence with the Columbia River. There was water everywhere: a thousand streams interrupted by makeshift waterfalls; small ponds hidden beneath a mask of thick fronds and anonymous blossoms; blankets of dew draped over the shoulders of isolated knolls. An entire civilization of insects lived in the mud puddle formed by one truck tire and a recent rain storm. The blades of grass, the narrow pine needles, and the stalks of roadside wheat were as sharp and bright as surgical tools. It's a hard story to read, and that's only right. The Toughest Indian in the World offers so many pleasures, who could deny it the power to disturb us as well? Funny, dreamlike, heartbreaking, angry--these are stories that could have been written by no one but Sherman Alexie. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
A prolific novelist, poet and screenplay writer, Alexie (Indian Killer; Reservation Blues) has been hailed as one of the best young writers of his generation. This dexterous second collection of stories contains what may be one of the best short fiction pieces of the year. "The Toughest Indian in the World" follows a young Spokane Indian who works at an all-white newspaper in Seattle and, in a forlorn attempt to reconnect with his roots, has his first homosexual experience with a tough Lummi fighter. It's a moving story that skillfully employs symbolism and flashbacks to construct an ending that is both uplifting and sorrowful. Many of the eight other stories in this collection also deal with urban Indians who are straddling two worlds: an intimate but indigent life on the reservation and an affluent but strange and sometimes hostile white middle-class existence. Their solutions to this double bind are rarely ordinary. "Assimilation" tells of a Coeur d'Alene woman who deliberately cheats on her white husband, only to rediscover her affection for him in the middle of a traffic jam. "Class" features a Spokane who sometimes tells white women he's Aztec, because "there were aphrodisiacal benefits from claiming to be descended from ritual cannibals." In "South by Southwest" a white man and a fat Indian nicknamed Salmon Boy, who declares he's not homosexual but does believe in love, set off on a nonviolent killing spree. Two tales, "Saint Junior" and "A Good Man," deal with marriage and death on the rez. The anger in these narratives is leavened by Alexie's acerbic wit and his obvious belief in the redemptive power of love. One exception, however, is "The Sin Eaters," an apocalyptic tale in which America's Indians are rounded up into massive underground prisons where soldiers force them to breed and give up their blood. Humorous, disturbing, formally inventive and heartwarming, Alexie's stories continually surprise, revealing him once again as a master of his craft. Agent, Nancy Cahoon, N. Stauffer Assoc. (May)

From Library Journal
Alexie may not be the toughest Indian in the world (in this stunning new collection, that honor goes to a Lummi fighter picked up by the narratorDor perhaps it's the durable narrator himself), but he definitely writes some of the toughest prose around. This work, Alexie's first collection since The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, offers nine stories rendered in muscular, unencumbered language that can deliver a shock like a good, hard punch. No, we shouldn't be much surprised when a character announces, "Indians just like to believe that white people will vanish, perhaps explode into smoke, if they are ignored enough times," but the delivery is so cool we are caught off guard. As the stories proceed from an Indian wife reconnecting with her husband after a calculated tryst to a lesbian couple (one Indian, one white) whose lives are complicated by a down-and-out male friend to an Indian father happy (is he really?) that his son has a good life with a white stepfather, Alexie moves in for the kill, consistently surprising us with stories that are neither sentimental nor angry but far more emotionally complex. Highly recommended.DBarbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"

I almost cried a few times and I laughed a lot
By Debra Garfinkle
For a story about an impoverished teen on an Indian reservation who has an alcoholic father and faces bullies and racism and the deaths of several close relatives, I sure laughed a lot. I loved the written humor and the wonderful cartoons throughout the book, as well as learning something about life on a reservation. I finished this fast-paced book in two days and was sorry to see it end. This is one of my favorite young adult novels of 2007.

Richie's Picks: THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN
By N. S.
"Mr. President you ought to know that this nation is more a 'Tale of Two Cities' than it is just a 'Shining City on a Hill.' "
-- Mario Cuomo, 1984 National Democratic Convention Keynote Address

"It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you're poor because you're stupid and ugly. And then you start believing that you're stupid and ugly because you're Indian. And because you're Indian you start believing you're destined to be poor. It's an ugly circle and there's nothing you can do about it.

So opines high school student and sometime cartoonist Arnold Spirit, aka Junior, who is despondent as his father prepares to shoot Arnold's suffering dog because there is no money to pay for a veterinarian's services. But a math teacher -- whose nose is broken when Arnold, in his frustration, angrily throws his generations-old math book --endeavors to change Arnold's sense of helplessness:

" 'You can't give up. You won't give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up.'
"I didn't know what he was talking about. Or maybe I just didn't want to know.
"Jeez, it was a lot of pressure to put on a kid. I was carrying the burden of my race, you know? I was going to get a bad back from it.
" 'If you stay on this rez,' Mr. P said, 'they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever.'
" 'I don't want to fight anybody.' I said.
" 'You've been fighting since you were born,' he said. 'You fought off that brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.'
"I was starting to understand. He was a math teacher. I had to add my hope to somebody else's hope. I had to multiply hope by hope.
" 'Where is hope?' I asked. 'Who has hope?'
" 'Son,' Mr. P said. 'You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad reservation.' "

I'd certainly heard of Sherman Alexie. Back in my bookstore days, a young college student with whom I worked spoke of him as a god. But I'd never read any of Alexie's books since he hadn't yet written anything for children or YAs.

THE ABSOLUTE TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN is a semi-autobiographical tale by Sherman Alexie, written for teen readers, that is in turns wacked-out, funny, heartbreaking, and jubilant. It is the story of an Indian kid who has survived a precarious infancy and is growing up on a reservation outside Spokane. It is a powerful story of friendship between two teenage guys who have grown up together on the reservation. It is the story of Arnold's journey after he is persuaded by the math teacher to escape the rez school and transfer to a high school 22 miles away.

And it is a tale of two cities.

"So what was I doing in Reardan, whose mascot was an Indian, thereby making me the only other Indian in town?"

THE ABSOLUTE TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN portrays Arnold's struggle through that ninth grade school year to succeed at the high school in Reardan, to which he often has to walk and/or hitch. It could be that Arnold's greatest struggle involves the conflict and guilt that comes from living among the Indian kids and grown-ups he's seemingly left behind on the reservation in order to attain that success.

Arnold's humorous and telling drawings (thanks to artist Ellen Forney), which are "taped" into the diary, significantly bolster the book's boy-charm and permit us to see, in a second dimension, Arnold's view of his world.

"My head was so big that little Indian skulls orbited around it. Some of the kids called me Orbit. And other kids just called me Globe. The bullies would pick me up, spin me in circles, put their finger down on my skull, and say, 'I want to go there'."

I loved hanging out in Arnold World! Sherman Alexie and his quirky, in-your-face, first-person tale of contemporary life on and off the reservation are both important and extremely welcome additions to the world of young adult literature.

The Absolutely True Review of a Part-Time Teacher
By LauraLewWho
It seems that this book is very polarizing. This appears to be due to its treatment of sensitive issues surrounding religion and faith, race, disability, and debates raging around abuse and neglect, among other subjects.

Having taught high schoolers and college students, I found this book to be an accurate representation of the way young people perceive and relate to the world around them. Alexie touches on serious subjects, like race, gender, class, discrimination, disability, death, and family, simultaneously with his teenaged narrator's wit and humor, particularly in Ellen Forney's cartoons and caricatures. While some of this humor is crass, it is not inappropriate; nor is it any different from the way young people talk amongst themselves.

While I thought this novel could have spent more time dissecting and analyzing all of these issues (hence the lower rating), I must disagree with assessments that this subject matter is inappropriate or lascivious for middle and high schoolers. While it may not be appropriate for every pre-teen and teen to read, it is not pornographic or tasteless. Alexie, through his narrator, Junior, discusses what it means to be a young adult caught between two worlds. He does so in a way that does not omit, censor or make light of the less savory elements of puberty: his perceptions are honest and accurate. He and his friends communicate and experience life in a way that is not always "appropriate;" they discuss alcoholism, teen sexuality and disability in the same way that teenagers who are trying to find their place in the world do: as seriously as possible, and as humorously as possible when seriousness fails.

It is doing a disservice to teens to paint a picture of life that is always appropriate; life is not always appropriate. When your family struggles with alcoholism and poverty, or your loved ones die, or your friends deal with eating disorders or physical ailments they are unable to control, or your future, and that of those around you, is limited by forces beyond your control, life is not appropriate. This novel attempts to deal with the realities of life in a way that is imperfect and developing, but relatable and real despite all that.

Starship Troopers, by Robert A. Heinlein

In one of Heinlein's most controversial best-sellers, a recruit in a future world is sent through the toughest boot camp in the Universe to join the Terran Mobile Infantry in battle against mankind's most alarming enemy.

Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Reserve on a lark, but despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper. In boot camp he learns how to become a soldier, but it is in war that he will learn why.

Many consider this Hugo Award-winning book to be Heinlein's best. Forget the battle scenes and the high-tech weapons; this is Heinlein in his element, talking people and politics.

Amazon.com Review
Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Service on a lark, but despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper. In boot camp he will learn how to become a soldier, but when he graduates and war comes (as it always does for soldiers), he will learn why he is a soldier. Many consider this Hugo Award winner to be Robert Heinlein's finest work, and with good reason. Forget the battle scenes and high-tech weapons (though this novel has them)--this is Heinlein at the top of his game talking people and politics.

Review
''Lloyd James is terrific as the narrator, able to infuse his voice with the wide-eyed innocence of Rico and the gruffness of Sgt. Zim. James' is a voice you can count on, and this is an absolutely fabulous audiobook--to my ears, the definitive version.'' --SFFAudio.com

''A book that continues to resonate and influence to this day, one whose popularity and luster hasn't been dimmed despite decades of imitations.'' --SF Reviews

''A classic . . . If you want a great military adventure, this one's for you.'' --All SciFi

Future Soldier as an Army of One
By DrPat
Veterans of battlefields from the US Civil War through current-day conflicts (and, I suspect, from Roman legions) would recognize the actions, attitudes, and behavior of the drop-troops Heinlein describes, even while the weapons and tactics they use in their battles are futuristic.

Here, the commander is an integral part of the troop, sharing in their attitudes and emotions, even while he possesses a broader picture of the conflict and the purpose of the battles they fight. Heinlein's future soldiers are fully human, not a fragment of humanity, and each fights for a reason other than his signature on a contract.

Just as he thought about where the future might lead with weapons development, Heinlein considered how the soldier of the future might change, and concluded that he would not. The "army of one" technology he describes for his space Marines does not isolate the trooper from his fellows; rather it tightens the esprit de corps of the troop by giving them an elite power.

There is much more in the novel than this conception of the future soldier, which makes Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" a much more interesting read than Dickson's "Dorsai!" (which was published almost in the same month as "Starship Troopers" in 1959). New voting patterns in a one-world government, philosophy classes in high schools, levels of citizenship—these are all brought into the mix to support the central tale of the future soldier. But Heinlein's story centers around the starship troopers of the title, and that's appropriate.

You can read either of these books and enjoy the perspective of 1959 on the wars and soldiers of the future. Which direction will the future soldier take? Whether it is Dickson's increasingly-perfected genetic powers, or Heinlein's increasingly powerful weapons carried by soldiers essentially unchanged since Thermopylae, there seems little doubt there will be war.

And thus there will be future soldiers.

Read this book on the bounce!
By Almaric
I enjoyed it very much. I love the movie too and have no problem with the discrepancies between book and film. I think they complement each other well.

Read this book if you enjoy a good military experience story, even if you don't care for sci-fi. Most of the book is focused on the main character's training, which any veteran should be able to relate to. I do wish there had been more combat scenes - the beginning and the end are the most exciting parts!

Don't read this book if you find nothing interesting or have no respect for the military mindset. Avoid it too if you have no tolerance for ethical\moral worldviews outside of your own. The culture developed is not authoritarian, yet not progressive or libertarian either. Gets a little preachy, but doesn't bog things down.

No sex, no cursing, no graphic violence. Just a smart, quick and enjoyable read.

A great coming of age story, interesting political discourse, and wonderful sci-fi writing
By Amazon Customer
After reading a long string of sci-fi "classics" that had interesting premises but sub par writing at best, Starship Troopers was a solid relief. The story is well paced, Johnny is very well defined as a character, and the writing is descriptive without diving into purple territory.

It can get a bit preachy, but given that it's as much a political philosophy book that's not terribly surprising. For the most part, the diversions into philosophy were well spaced, and largely suited the story as well.

If you're looking for a classic of sci-fi literature that will teach you about several modern sci-fi tropes, while also making for a good read, I would highly recommend this book.

Refreshingly practical, honest and straightforward
By Rugare
I went through this book in a breeze, it is honest and very practical and gets your mind thinking that you need to have something that someone wants and put a price to it. I liked that it was not theoretical and it's more of a prompt to get you thinking about money. One of the few books that ends at the most opportune time. I loved the blueprints. Anyone who is serious about making practical changes in the financial matters should read this. I will teach my 5 year old the 50c challenge! Every child needs to learn this.

An intriguing game to learn business principles
By Amazon Customer
An interesting approach to teaching business concepts. Presented as a game for children, primarily, but equally useful for adults who need to understand how business works. Destroys the myth that you have to have a lot of money to make money. Starting with 50 cents the book outlines a process to potentially make over $1 million in 200 days. The odds of that actually happening are slim, but if you shoot for a million and make $10,000, is that a bad thing? A very quick and potentially valuable read.

Business guidlines 101
By Mike P.
I have gone over the book a second time and realized there is a lot of business/economics information that can be likened to a course taken at school. The three examples in the back section of the book could be used as guidlines for business purposes. The cover photo is a little wacky but we should not judge a book by it's cover, as I have learned. ;-)

Metaphors and exercises play an incredibly important part in the successful delivery of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These powerful tools go far in helping clients connect with their values and give them the motivation needed to make a real, conscious commitment to change. Unfortunately, many of the metaphors that clinicians use have become stale and ineffective. That’s why you need fresh, new resources for your professional library.

In this breakthrough book, two ACT researchers provide an essential A-Z resource guide that includes tons of new metaphors and experiential exercises to help promote client acceptance, defusion from troubling thoughts, and values-based action. The book also includes scripts tailored to different client populations, and special metaphors and exercises that address unique problems that may sometimes arise in your therapy sessions.

Several ACT texts and workbooks have been published for the treatment of a variety of psychological problems. However, no one resource exists where you can find an exhaustive list of metaphors and experiential exercises geared toward the six core elements of ACT.Whether you are treating a client with anxiety, depression, trauma, or an eating disorder, this book will provide you with the skills needed to improve lives, one exercise at a time.

With a special foreword by ACT cofounder Steven C. Hayes, PhD, this book is a must-have for any ACT Practitioner.

Review
“A valuable addition to your ACT toolkit.”
—Russ Harris, author ofThe Happiness Trap

“ACT has burst upon the psychotherapy scene with creativity, a deep sense of excitement, and, most importantly, strong empirical support. With its premise that human suffering is an unfortunate byproduct of our everyday language and conceptions, metaphors become a more important tool in this therapeutic approach than most others. Now, Jill A. Stoddard, and Niloofar Afari have assembled these metaphors in an entertaining reference book that will be extraordinarily valuable—not only to practitioners of ACT, but to psychotherapists everywhere.”
—David H. Barlow PhD, ABPP, professor of psychology and psychiatry at Boston University and founder and director emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders

“As the interest in ACT has grown internationally, there has been a burgeoning desire to find new and individually relevant metaphors and exercises to use across a variety of settings and clinical populations. This book will certainly satisfy that appetite for those looking for new ways to best connect with their clients. But more importantly, this book will inspire readers to recognize what has been true all along: that the metaphors and exercises that will be most useful are those that draw upon clients’ own experiences. By bringing this compendium together, the authors will inspire clinicians around the world to be more creative in their practice.”
—Sonja V. Batten, PhD, president (2013-2014) of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science and adjunct associate professor of psychiatry at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

“As an ACT trainer and therapist, this is a must-buy! If you are looking for new, distinctive, and effective ways to deepen your clients’ understanding of ACT, your quest is at an end. Stoddard and Afari have pulled together a wonderful compendium of rich and effective metaphors that, when delivered in therapy, will create an engaging and meaningful experience. The wealth and variety of stories and exercises will meet the needs of many a client. I know I will return to this book again and again, and like few others on my shelf, it will be dog-eared, coffee-stained, and well-worn—thanks for putting together this terrific collection!”—Robyn D. Walser, PhD, associate director of dissemination and training at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, assistant clinical professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of TLConsultation Services

great collection of tools
By Tswj
Really great collection of techniques for beginning and intermediate ACT therapists. It's organized neatly to the hexaflex and has some really insightful info about how to conceptualize fit of the techniques to the clients. Dr. Stoddard is thee best professor I've ever had in grad school in terms of actually learning from what she has to teach and how she approaches it. You just learn so much from her lectures and this book really captures that same wealth of information and the style of her teaching that really captures the attention of the learner.

Great Resource, well written
By Gypsy Samuels
If you are using ACT in your practice you must have this book. It is informative and very instructive for the clinician. You will gain many, many important metaphorical approaches that are very useful in your sessions. The book does an excellent job of de-literalizing concepts driven by language that is often holding the client in their stuck or fused mode. And, of course, it is fun at the same time to gain metaphorical approaches to tweak your own growth and at the same time-- the clients. Good job Dr. Stoddard. Please keep those cards and letter coming.

If you want to improve your use of metaphors, you need this book.
By Joshua Wayne Madsen
“The Big Book of ACT Metaphors” is an invaluable resource for ACT practitioners at any stage of development—or any therapist wishing to more effectively use metaphors in their practice. Not only are myriad metaphors and activities provided, but so is a chapter instructing the reader in how to hone their ability to generate and deliver their own metaphors for maximum therapeutic impact—speaking metaphorically, this book not only gives you fish, but it teaches you to fish, too! Finally, Dr. Stoddard and Dr. Afari ground all of their material in a sufficient, but not overly technical or extensive, introduction/review of the theoretical underpinnings of ACT and its key principles, and subsequently present metaphors with respect to relevant ACT processes. They therefore succeed in both honoring (and highlighting) the creative and experiential aspects of metaphors in psychotherapy, AND providing a solid framework to understand their function in context and guide their use in moment-to-moment therapeutic processes.
